Mangino hospitalized for tests
Kansas head coach Mark Mangino was admitted to the intensive care unit of a Lawrence, Kansas hospital at 9pm on Sunday for "routine tests" on Monday.
"I underwent some tests over the past couple of days at Lawrence Memorial Hospital," Mangino said in a statement issued Monday night through the athletic department. "These are tests that I had put off until after the season. The tests have been completed, I'm fine and I'll be back in the office and recruiting starting tomorrow."
While everyone is saying that this was a scheduled test (and maybe it was) the entire KU community was holding its breath when this was announced. Mangino has been cautioned before about the health risks associated with his weight, and was even encouraged by the Kansas AD to undergo gastric bypass.
Still, something about this situation gives me pause. Why would Coach Mangino schedule a routine test that would require him to be in the intensive care unit just days before National Signing Day? That just doesn't jive. If it's something scheduled, then why not schedule it after NSD??
I'm not saying that KU is out-and-out whitewashing the story, but... I think we're missing some details.

Probably the only explanation is that the tests were heart related, and seeing that he’s probably 300 lb overweight, they may have wanted him in the intensive care unit to begin with just in case they found something that had to be dealt with immediately.
Whatever the case may be, I hope he’s really ok.
Lose some weight Mark, before it’s too late..

His quote tells me that he isn't taking the situation seriously. The way I'm reading his quote, he seems to be saying he got the bothersome tests done and out of the way so his doctor and anybody else who cares will get off his back; at least for a little while.
I hope he wakes up and smells the coffee soon.

Anyone seen that picture of Mangino standing next to the Orange Bowl mascot? He's wider than that big cartoon orange. Kevin, you should post that pic above.
I've never understood how players can learn discipline from someone who has none of his own...

Good eye, Ron. Seperated at birth for sure. Of course, Hardy had a little shorter moustache, a la Hitler, but they definitely look alike. I think Hardy was probably a bit smaller.
Both Mangino and Obie wear a size 66L coat, apparently...

Well, leave it to Bevo Boy to spell out the rules. You’re a cool kid, but deess izza no place to seet onna U high horse. Leava da selfa rrrighteouza ahtituda elssa wherrrre.
Difficult as it may be to tell a fellow Pizan to lay off the pasta, I have to say, Mark, if you’re listening, you’re way past due. (Of course, I’m gonna feel pretty silly if he has a thyroid problem, or other condition which makes loosing weight problematic.)
None of us have to be told how high profile and high stress a college football HC job is. Obesity to the level Mark suffers from lends to stress well beyond that. Trust me; a colonoscopy won’t help. Heart-Rate & Blood-Pressure medication only treat the symptoms. If he wants to see 52, let alone the rest of his potential life, he really needs to attack this issue with the same aggression he uses to attack his job.
We’re praying for ya, Mark. We wanna see ya on the side-lines. Best of luck.
By the way, the Rodriguez/WVU saga contiinues. Film at 11:00.
