Perrilloux: Drop the redshirt??
LSU football coach Les Miles has resisted the temptation all year to play heralded freshman QB Ryan Perrilloux. With the season almost over, Miles has made it through the year and his prize frosh has four years of eligibility remaining. But now some are calling for Miles to burn the redshirt and play Perrilloux in the Peach Bowl.
Miles should burn Perrilloux's redshirt and start him at quarterback against Miami in the Peach Bowl on Dec. 30.Start him because LSU's offense needs a spark, and Perrilloux is pure electricity. Start him because the Tigers need a jolt, and he's as close to an injection of Red Bull as LSU has this season. Start him because a staleness and stagnancy has set in and legitimate playmakers can snap this kind of doldrums. The Tigers, who haven't manufactured much of anything collectively or individually on offense lately, desperately can use his abilities as a dual threat to create and improvise.
...
Is it worth it, at this stage, to burn Perrilloux's redshirt? Is it fair to him to take away an entire extra year in exchange for 60 minutes?
It is if Miles plans to use him next year, rotating into the lineup periodically to take advantage of the specific gifts he has. It is if there's a possibility he could start next season if Russell doesn't make the improvement he'll have to make in order to keep teams from clogging the line of scrimmage against the run.
...
And anyone who has seen LSU lately knows the offense could use a shot of confidence. It could use a shakeup. It could use Perrilloux, who's standing on the sideline as if encased in a "Break In Case Of Emergency" glass.

This is insanity. Miles would be making a huge mistake if he wasted a year of this kid's eligibility on one bowl game.

Absolutely right, Mike. Why would we want to lose an entire year with an explosive playmaker just to get a look at him in a game with no title implications? No way in Hades to you burn that kid's shirt for the Peach Bowl. If LSU was in the Rose Bowl, then maybe you do it, but only Miles and his staff know if he's good enough to come in and have a chance of winning. You'd have to be supremely confident of that before you trade one year for one game.

I agree with you guys. That would be real stupid to trade a whole season for one game. Im a GA fan, but I would hate to see that. Im for the SEC too, and I think LSU can win that game without him. That would be like taking away his senior season.

Well, it think that it might be a waste of a year. But, does anyone really think that he'll be around in his 5th year? I don't. These guys don't even make it past three - let alone five. At SC, Booty had to back up Leinart during his freshman season, and then redshirted in his sophmore year, after Kassel won the backup job. Sanchez has redshirted this year - so it will be tough trying to get Tebow to come play for Troy. Rocky Hinds transferred because he may have been asked to redshirt for this upcoming year. So, there could be multiple reasons for wasting the year. If it were based solely on trying to win one bowl game - that would be real stupid. And, I am sure, that the Bengals must be trying to recruit another QB. What if Perrilloux looked to darn good and scared the recruit away? That wouldn't be too good either. Most of these guys want a chance to compete. Perrilloux passed on SC because Sanchez had already commited. Hinds quit because Sanchez commited. I remember when SC brought in Carson Palmer and Jason Thomas, the two best prospects out of high school, both in the same year. Well, Thomas had to transfer to Las Vegas when Palmer beat him out. Sad story there - but, good for Palmer. Fact is: unless you are really deep in certain positions you have got to keep moving these guys through the system in order to keep opening up scholarships for the "new blood". If LSU is thin at QB - they will need to keep bringing good ones in. You can't do that too well if you are always redshirting other good QB's. So they may just waste the year, let Perrilloux start as a soph and junior (turns pro after that), and tell the recruit that it is his job for three years after that if he redshirts. Sound good, right? Those could be some reason that a coaching staff might make the decision to toss the shirt away. They might know that they'll never keep him for even four - so, why not try and win the game and keep some promising recruit happy all at the same time?

I think they're gonna win the game anyway. Without him even playing. If he's that good that they're questioning it, they might not have a recruit that's worth wasting his year on. Or they may have plenty of recruits that just want to play at LSU because they have had a good team the past few years. UGA hasn't been that great, but Shockley waited 4 years behind David Green to be the starting QB. And I think he did a great job this year. We lost to FLA, the game he missed and lost by 4 points, lost to AUB by 1 point his 1st game back, but I was wondering if he was fully back then. He may have been rusty a little bit. But he has commitment and loyalty to his team. So Tommie T., he probably coulda got some girls at your school, he just didn't want them. But you guys have the best condem commercials I've ever seen.

Also, Matt Flynn isn't an awful quarterback. I think given a month of first-string snaps he'll be able to lead the Tigers much better than a freshman, no matter how talented.

LSU went as far as they did on pure talented players, making plays when they needed it. The team however did not play to its potential because they did not play like a team. Matt Flynn may not be as athletic as russell but I think he has a better head on his shoulders then russell ever will. I say let flynn play and get more experience and confidence so that he will be a better back up QB no matter who starts next season. Ryan does not need to start this game because it would be stupid to throw away that year for one game, that LSU can win with out him.

For the first time in years, the questions surrounding the QB position in Baton Rouge are in a positive light. LSU brings in the top QB committee in the nation for the '06 season. With jr. Jamarcus Russell healthy and back to his old form, he will carry the starting spot for the Tigers to open the season. Jr. backup Matt Flynn and redshirt fr. Ryan Perrilloux provide intriguing relief options should Russell go down. Russell has the size and arm strength rare to even NFL quarterbacks, although his decision-making must improve in order for him to make the step up to a premier prospect next year. In the Tigers' bowl game against Miami last season, Flynn was given the opportunity to start due to an injury to Russell in the last game of the season. Flynn not only led LSU to a dominating 40-3 victory, but he also showed unexpected poise and leadership, and even surprised many with his running ability. With that said, Perrilloux joining the mix this season only makes the status of the QB position a question-- a GREAT question. For those of you who aren't familiar with Perrilloux's high school career, he tallied 30 passing TD's and 37 rushing TD's... in just his senior year! This kid has got amazing upside and physical skills unmatched by any high school recruit in recent memory. Look for Les Miles to slowly work him into games this season to prepare him for next season, or even to relieve Russell in case of another injury. Bottom line, this is Russell's job to lose. Barring injury or a major decline in production, Russell will retain the starting job all season. Next year, however, could be another story. College football-- gotta love it!
