Perrilloux makes headlines again - this time on the field
Ryan Perrilloux has probably had his name in the Louisiana papers as much as any LSU player in a long, long time.
Perrilloux spent the off-season as a "person of interest" in a federal counterfeiting investigation. And then he was busted for using his brother's ID to get into a casino. Miles suspended him indefinitely and banned him from talking to the media until he did something on the field that merited discussion.
Last night - in his first start at LSU - Perrilloux did just that. He made his game the subject of conversation, much to the delight of Les Miles. LSU rested starting QB Matt Flynn to give his ankle more time to heal, and Perrilloux took it to Middle Tennessee.
Perrilloux threw for 298 yards and three touchdowns in his first career start to lead No. 2 LSU to a 44-0 victory over Middle Tennessee on Saturday night."I was real nervous, but after the first snap, all the jitters go away and you just kind of relax and calm down and play ball," said Perrilloux, who had not been permitted to speak with reporters previously this season. "They stuck with me and they stuck behind me. They knew I was going to be able to one day lead this team and I thank them for that."
Still, Perrilloux is not getting much rope. ESPN mentioned that he was presented to the media after the game with several LSU administration officials standing in the wings, just in case he found himself in trouble... again.
While we're on the subject of LSU.... The Tigers deserve to be the #1 team in the country. Period.
LSU looks like they're on a collision course with an undefeated Florida in October. The winner of that game would seem to have the inside track at a USC or Oklahoma for the BCS championship down the road. And while the Gators look *really* good - I think LSU is the best team in the country.

I agree LSU & UF are both forces to be reckoned with.
#1: LSU
#2: OU
#3: USC
#4: UF
#5: WVUI think UF is unreal, it's sickening actually. At this point they'll beat FSU by 35 points. Their defense is playing very, very well. Obviously, anytime you can triple your opponents score it's impressive. I think it was a combination of UF being a GREAT team and the fact Tenn probably isn't all that great this year. Tenn will probably go 8-4 or worse. Kudos to UF for making a statement though in a headline game.
The LSU - UF showdown could easily be the top game of the season when it rolls around.

After last year's turn of events I have to put Florida at number 1 until somebody beats them. LSU and USC are both playing great football and Kevin you are right about the Florida vs. LSU game. For some of you that know schedules better than me, when is USC's next test after last night's win over Nebraska?

Hey CUtotalTiger...Louisiana State is the only Top 5 team still with a victory over a top 10 team. Virginia Tech was ranked #9 at the time. Was Virginia Tech a Top 10 team then? I don't know but the voters claim they were! I, myself would vote:
#1 - Louisiana State Tigers
#2 - Southern California Trojans
#3 - Florida Gators
#4 - Oklahoma Sooners
#5 - West Virginia MountaineersBut these numbers will change in two weeks or so with conference play approaching.

I have to agree with some of you as to the rankings:
#1 LSU
#2 USC
#3 Florida
#4 OklahomaLSU is the only one of the four to defeat a top ten team. Virginia Tech was #9 when LSU beat them convincingly. I have to put in my two cents though. While I do agree that LSU and Florida are both incredibly good teams this year, they both have roads that lead through South Carolina. We may not win, but we have had an extraordinary ability of playing to the talent level of our opponents in the past few years. All I say is you cannot look past those games because you could find yourself in a disastrous position. Every game is important, and in the SEC, it is and has always been ANY GIVEN SATURDAY!
GO COCKS!!!

#1 USC
#2 LSU
#3 Oklahoma
#4 Florida
#5 CaliforniaPersonally, I give USC the nod for #1. They went into Lincoln (a very difficult place to play), and won convincingly over what looks like a top 15 Nebraska squad. LSU beat a questionable VT team at home. Because of USC getting their win on the road, I give them the nod.
MrGamecockFan (#8):
I am fully aware that we are fans of rival teams, however I am really not trying to start anything here, so don't take it that way. You must admit that the Gamecock passing game has been downright abysmal in the first 3 weeks of the season. How do you foresee a virtually 1 dimensional offense getting past the defenses of LSU and Florida? That seems to be the million dollar question about next Saturday's match up in Louisiana.

Lennie and MrGamecockFan,
LSU is good........BUT do either one of you think Va. Tech is a top 20 team? They beat ECU by only 10. 1) ECU benched their starting qb. 2) Va. Tech could only get 1 offensive TD
If you are a top 20 team then you take care of a team that lost this past week to Southern Miss. Sorry guys, but by the same token you would have to convince me that Georgia and Auburn are top 20 teams.
LSU is very good. They may be the best team in the nation. But there is not way you can use the logic they are the best team because of their win over #9 Va. Tech. The Hokies were tide 7-7 at the half with Ohio and only had a 7 point lead going into the fourth!
The Hokies may beat me Tigers, but they are not a top 20 team.CUTotalTiger said:

MrGamecockFan.. POST 8,
Two things I take issue with...
The fist is that you say your team plays to the level of your opponents. That would imply that your coaching staff does not properly prepare your team. Sorry, but you have a good staff. Could it meant either 1) Parity or 2) The SEC is not as strong as it use to be.
The second thing is that, since the inception of the championship game, in the SEC East, it was Florida or Tennessee. Only when Georgia got one of Bobby's assisstants did Georiga become part of the equation. And now South Carolina and Kentucky are creeping in.
So i would say not it is any given Saturday in the East.... But in the West, it is LSULennie Collins said:

Hey CUTotalTiger...that is like asking me if O.J. did it or if Barry Bonds took steriods? I don't know but I be doggone if I am going to say they are not. That is why I do not like preseason polls. They give some teams too much glory before they even play a game and if the team loses people want to talk bad about the team as if they(The team) were the ones saying(voting) hey we are this or that. Are texas or Wisconsin playing like Top 10 teams? With the exception of LSU, USC, UF, OU, and WVU who is or who are? Until these teams(BCS) play head to head at least I won't know. The fact is if you agree or not LSU did beat a #9 VT team and yet most of the college football world is praising USC as though they did something unheard of. I will say it once more that I did pick NU to beat USC. I was wrong but I am not gone to say "Well Nebraska should have not been ranked #14".

I'm gonna need to respectfully disagree there...
WVU held Maryland to 89 yards rushing and 180 through the air...
They had numerous key third down stops and gave up a late TD with second stringers in, but still did it grudgingly...
Granted, the Terps aren't exactly an offensive dynamo, but they are a decent football team in the middle of the ACC pack...
I'm not one to really toot the WVU horn, but their defense looks decidedly better than last year...

#10 CUTotalTigerVery good points ya'll bring up, but you must also look at the fact that Nebraska played a good game until after halftime when USC rolled them. Also, Florida absolutely steamrolled a Tennessee team that might not be as good as people expected. That, along with the way I ranked them is just my opinion. I feel that LSU is the best team out there with the most depth.
Anyways, my original argument was for people to not start writing in LSU and Florida as the SEC Title contenders because both schools have routes which lead through a ranked South Carolina. While I agree that our passing game has been spotty, we do have an excellent run game and an outstanding defense which hasn't allowed a touchdown in the last two games. And, paired with an uncanny ability to play to the talent level of our opponents, don't be surprised if South Carolina pulls off an amazing upset. I don't think it will happen, but I can always be hopeful.

MrGamecockFan,
Great Point!! The Evil Genius would LOVE to beat Florida. Of course he loves to beat anybody. That's why he's a great coach. The SEC is full of story lines. LSU now hates Saban, as if the LSU vs. AL game needed more fuel on the fire. Spurrier hates everybody and wants to be the top dog so bad he probably doesn't sleep at night. Tubberville and Fulmer need a big SEC win to quiet the restless fan base......it just goes on and on.

@#10: I was at the game Saturday vs. Ohio. which by the way is the favorite in the MAC. It is true our O has a lot to work on, but our D is back on track. The only points a GOOD Ohio team mustered up was off a botched punt by Eddie Royal deep in our own territory. Then a rediculous call on 3 and a mile put the Bobcats in scoring position. They scored early in the game then it was VT D time. VT held the cats to 33 total yards in the second half I think 118 total offensive yards with no 3rd down conversions. Our D is on track and our O is getting better now that they have the QB position about figured out. You may want to check out the stats and facts before you trounce a team for a game you know nothing about! Unlike Bowden and other head coaches struggling to keep a job Beamer is in the drivers seat at tech for as long as he wants the job, so he doesn't have to run the score up on a team to keep people impressed. Although I will admit, we got off to a sluggish start, VT absolutely dominated the game. You know kinda like Clemson trashed almighty Furman!! Yes, theres been issues on both sides of the ball, but I think VT is definately a top 25 team. Have you been paying any attention to whats going on in college football? THere will be plenty more surprises coming up I'm sure.

MrGamecockFan,
The last two years, you are 1-1 against Florida and from a stat point of view have beaten them. You get them at your place this year and I fully anticipate a win for you.
I really think you are going to win the East this year. And coming from a Clemson fan that pains me.... but I will tell it like it is...
You are correct. Tennessee laid an egg. I sure did not see that coming.CUTotalTiger said:

FORGIVE me hokie for life....
You can not be good every year. And the way you handle ECU, LSU and Ohio... what was I thinking?
Look, you may beat Clemson and go on a run. But right now... you are 2-1 with a struggling offense. You are not a top 20 team.
And of the 17 preseason publications I follow, only 6 of them predicted Ohio finishing first in their division. We will find out what they have next week when they play a good Wyoming team.
And honest question.. I read last week in the Roanoke paper that Glennon was talking about leaving Tech his senior year? Looks like he played a little in mop up duty. What is the latest on that. Is he nuts????

Hokie 4 LIfe... you posted under the wrong topic.
I am sure you meant to rip me here. But i will answer the same.
Get a life... you are not a top 20 football team after week 3. You may be in the end.
And i said nothing about Clemson... In fact even suggested you would beat us.
And you did not answer the question about Glennon. Did Beamer and O'Cain settle him down?

you guys bring up some good points here, however i think #12 south carolina really has a chance to pull off some big upsets this yeer and to make history...we havent been ranked this high since we played arkansas in 2001 so that means were looking hot right now and we wont go in and get blown out by an lsu team...its hard to predict the outcomes for next weeks LSU vs SOUTH CAROLINA but i see my gamecocks out on top
and about the order of the top 5 this is what i say to stop the arguement1.LSU (tie)
1.Oklahoma (tie)
1.USC (tie)
1.Florida (tie)
5.not too sure whose worthy of number 5 but the teams above all deserve number 1 in a way
