LSU, Tulane to wear special uniforms for Katrina relief

Both the LSU Tigers and the Tulane Green Wave will wear a one-time, commemorative uniform to help raise money and awareness for Katrina Relief.

The uniforms for both teams will feature a rising pelican logo, designed by Nike. The Pelican emblem is a tribute to the state bird and resembles a rising Phoenix, a symbol of the rebirth of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast area.

The LSU uniform - which has caused quite a stir from Tiger fans - features purple jerseys with the rising pelican emblem on the shoulder pads, plus a white helmet shell and white pants.

Tulane will unveil their uniforms prior to the game in the Superdome.

Proceeds from commemorative apparel sales will benefit the Nike's Let Me Play New Orleans fund to help rebuild New Orleans through Sport.

"It’s a wonderful thing for Nike to step up and show the want and desire to sponsor this game and to get behind an event that will bring a great deal of attention to an area that was so adversely affected by Hurricane Katrina," LSU coach Les Miles said. "This is just another example of Nike’s commitment to the people, especially the youth, of New Orleans and surrounding areas as they continue to rebuild this wonderful city.

“We are excited and honored to be a part of this game and to do our part in continuing to raise awareness of the work that still remains in helping restore New Orleans."

What the Nike folks aren't promoting is that only $1 from each jersey sold will go to charity. $1/jersey? Are you freakin' kidding me?!?! Never put it past Nike to profit off of the loss of others, I suppose. Maybe I'm way off base, but EVERY SINGLE PENNY OF PROFIT should go to the charities.

Otherwise, let's just call it greed and move on, OK?

The eye of the tiger on the pant leg is pretty effin sweet.

What's up with the blond wig on the pelican????

I think it's pretty cool when a team changes the look of their uniform once a year (ie Gators and Hurricanes throwbacks of last year)

Again Nike is messing up! The Oregon Ducks, Oregon State Beavers, and now this. I think it is great that Nike wants to help raise money to rebuild New Orleans but lately their jersey designs have been "off the wall". Correct me if I am wrong fellow bloggers now but does this LSU commemorative jerseys look a little like their regular, seldom used purple jerseys with the shoulder strips shorten with that pelican with the gold hair in the middle? The pants and helmets are okay although I don't care to much for white helmets. The eye of the tiger patch is great and that's the best part of this outfits!

Not to be outdone, Oregon will come up with a new uniform next week.

Eye of the Tiger you could be right! They are the only team in college football that wears 4: Green, Black, Yellow, and White. They actually had Chrome ones but decided not to wear them.

Most LSU fans I've spoken with think they're hideous...and they already ran a gold colored uni by us, and we said no tanx...

This one was signed off by Administration, AD, the staff, and the players, too...

Tradition states that we wear white at home, but the players all love the Purple Jersey's better. I could care less, but it is a bit of a "follow the money" type of deal.

Our AD has obviously had a hand in it...Stanley "Skip" "Sweatpants" "Emeritu$" Bertman played a quite signicant role, no doubt...He leaves no stone unturned in his never ending, unquenched sojourn for revenue streams...

Oh TE I remember those gold ones. They definitely were an eye opener. Different but bright. I like the purple ones better. Why do LSU wear their whites ones at home? Most LSU fans I have asked tell me they really don't know why.

It was a tradition from many years back that we wore whites at home, and Gerry DiNardon't lobbied the NCAA to change the rule so the home team can wear them at home, but only if the visiting team acquiesces to a prior request for it...

With few exceptions, LSU's opponents always have...

Oh, and I got one other thing for you guys on the uniform change...

    WAR DAMN PELICAN!

I remember long ago a fan said in the 1957 or 1958 season they lost all their home games in the coach said forget it and they wore all white the following year and won the majority of their games. You are probably like me. I don't care what Oklahoma wears as long as they win. That is the best tradition in college football having your team win!

The Eye of the Tiger on the pants leg is an awesome element. I think they should put that on the regular uni pants.

And I do love the Pelican. I think that's an awesome logo. I can't believe the guys at Nike - who have had nothing but crap designs of late - actually came up with that. Good stuff.

I'm thinking that the Tulane uniform will be sporting the pelican logo as well...

Given that it's the state symbol...

    Just a thought...

I think they should put the eye of the tiger on the side of the helmet as opposed to the full face of the tiger.

Also, i think the white helmets are pretty cool too. There's nothing wrong with a little change every now and then IMO

    TE (#12):

    Correct me if I'm wrong...

I thought the white uni tradition was started by Paul Dietzel when LSU won the MNC in the late '50's...

Then was refounded by DiNardo after he lobbied each rule committee member personally in the early 90's...

And don't the Tigers only wear white for home openers and conference games at home now?

War Damn Pelican, indeed! You know, if you glimpse at the pelican logo from afar, it looks like the Air Force Chevron logo.

Eye of the Tiger #8: LMAO!

hippy, I didn't profess to know the origination of the uni, but it was an ages old thing...

DiNardon't did lobby to get the rules changed back to allow us to wear white at home...Which is what I said...

I personally wouldn't mind the Purple Unis at home all the time...I think they look way better, but there's a large contingent of our fanbase who are "traditionalist/purists" in the same manner that Yankee's fans are considered...

OK, at least Nike is doing...something??? For crummany's sake, they could have donated the shirts. In the long run, they would have made money that way. Instead, people are bitchin.
