LSU dials up more staff chaos by hiring Orgeron
In the wake of two expected openings on the defensive coaching staff, the LSU Tigers have made quite an upgrade in the offseason by hiring former Tennessee DC John Chavis. Credited with saving Phil Fulmer's sherbert-clad backside for much of the 21st century, Chavis is considered one of the better defensive coordinators in college football and will bring some sanity and passion to the Tiger defense.
LSU defensive co-coordinator Bradley Dale Peveto -- one of of the unholy alliance that our own TigerEducted has been ranting about all season -- became Northwestern State's new head coach last week. Fellow co-DC Doug Mallory one foot out the door as well, with the expectation that he will be the new DC at New Mexico.
With that unstable situation behind them, LSU has also decided to hire former Ole Miss head coach Ed Orgeron as defensive line coach... under Chavis. And just to prove that things are 110% normal at LSU, Orgeron will also be the Associate Head Coach... making $100,000 more per year than Chavis.
Enter Chavis and... Orgeron.
Both are expected to make more than $500,000 a year. Orgeron could be in the $600,000 range, Hebert said."LSU wants to take care of him," said Hebert, a former Saints quarterback who is a talk show host for WWL Radio in New Orleans and has a son, T-Bob Hebert, on the LSU team. "That’s why he's going to be recruiting coordinator and associate head coach. Ed is in Destin now talking to his wife and kids about it. Staying in Louisiana and getting back to college football was very important to him."
So - for those of you paying real close attention - LSU is also prepared to relieve Josh Henson of his duties as recruiting coordinator... hot on the heels of Henson gathering up one of the top recruiting classes in the nation for LSU.
You have to hand it to Les Miles. A lesser coach wouldn't be able to come up with such a... plan. But for LSU... well, it just kinda seems... normal, doesn't it?
UPDATE
Whoa, Nellie!!!! LSU Beat jumped the Gun. Orgeron is *not* going to LSU. ESPN has confirmed -- as in, actually talked to Orgeron -- that he is going to be the Associate Head Coach at Tennessee.
I take back everything I said (this time) about Louisiana being all bass ackward.
