Investigation of bar brawl involving Terps

Prince George's County Police are investigating a fight allegedly involving Maryland Terrapins football players that took place at 1 a.m. Tuesday in a College Park bar. Reports indicate that a bouncer at the bar approached one of the players after he groped a female customer of the bar. The bouncer then warned that unidentified player. The same female customer returned to the bouncer a few minutes later to report that the same player had hit her. The same bouncer returned to the same player again and the trouble began.

The bouncer said there was "chaos" and "an all out brawl" involving approximately 12 Maryland players, 7-8 bouncers and other members of the bar's staff. Bottles were being used as weapons as well as the fists of the participants as the fight moved into the foyer from the bar area. Mike McDonald, an off-duty bouncer involved, was taken to the hospital with a broken nose. He planned to file a police report today that could result in charges against some of the players involved.

Witnesses said that one of the players involved had his face cut by a bottle during the brawl. A security guard at a local hospital confirmed reports that two of the players taken to a local emergency room for treatment had to be separated by security after trying to start a fight in the ER.

Last call was scheduled for 1:30 a.m. but the bar was closed at 1:15. Head coach Ralph Friedgen arrived at the bar shortly thereafter. He was not available for comment initially but he later said he was unsure of all of the facts involved and that he would have more to say later. The bar's owner wouldn't confirm reports that the players would be banned from returning to his establishment but did say he planned to talk to Friedgen. Members of the school's wrestling team have been banned from the bar in the past.

No players have been publicly identified as involved, although the University says students and players were at the bar. A determination of a violation of the school's student-athlete code of conduct cannot be made until the investigation is complete according to University officials.

The Diamondback reports that three of the players present in the bar, but not necessarily involved in the altercation, included Derrick Fenner, Drew Weatherly and Marcus Wimbush. That story also indicates that bar staff identified 6 of the players involved to police and to Friedgen based on numbers on their jackets and video surveillance.

The Terps have an open date this weekend and return to the field October 12 at North Carolina.

How pissed do you think Friedgen was having to roll out of bed @ 1 in the morning to chase down some of his players at a bar. This probably is a great way to get into the coaches dog house, wouldn't you think?? Then again when you think about it, the Terps are just trying to fit into the ACC (Atlantic Coast Convicts). There is an impressive list of offenders in the ACC, probably the best in the country. Miami has an impressive list of offenders, FSU year in and year out always produces quality players for the prison system. Don't forget about ESPN's love affair with Marcus "Con"Vick at Virginia Tech, he is the new poster child for ACC jumpsuit wearers...........until this most recent attempt by the Terps to make a name for themselves.

The obviously feel that if they are going to play like one of the top 4 teams in the conference, they should start acting like one.

Trust me, it's not an ACC problem. But as long as you keep pointing the finger, I'll keep reminding you of these things.

Nice game last night, by the way!
