Maryland lands coveted Florida transfer QB

Florida freshman QB Josh Portis will enroll at the University of Maryland this spring and join the Maryland football team for spring drills.

Portis, who announced his decision to leave the Gators just days ago, will play in the 2007 season with three years of eligibility remaining. Portis nearly landed at Maryland last year, but committed to Urban Meyer at Utah & then followed Meyer to Florida - a school that he never considered. In retrospect, he says he should have signed at Maryland all along.

"That was my gut feeling last year and I should have gone there last year," he said. "The coaches are straightforward and I just had a feeling about the place."

The SEC has so much talent that our leftovers go start for bowl teams at other schools. Case in point: Onterrio Smith. 3rd or 4th string tailback at Tennessee so he goes to Oregon where he becomes a 1,000 yard rusher for that team that (yawn) should have been given the privilege of getting destroyed by Miami in the national title game. (Looking at how the pro careers of Onterrio Smith, Joey Harrington, Maurice Morris and everyone else on that Oregon team have gone ... flat ... and comparing it to the NFL Pro Bowlers on that Miami team, Oregon fans should not claim that they would have had a shot against Miami. It isn't as if Oregon's players became, say, Ronnie Brown or Cadillac Williams on the next level or something!)

Why the bad blood? Portis is just a kid. I know mama ain't the easiest to work with, but give the guy a chance.

Terps are getting a potential gamebreaker. There is a reason Portis was #2 on the Gator depth chart as a frosh.

I'm excited about Tebow, but you're kidding yourselves if you think the loss of Portis is "no big deal".

Anyone who saw the spring game knows this kid is gonna be a monster.
