Maryland QB out for the season for cheating

Former Florida backup QB Josh Portis has been declared ineligible for the season by the University of Maryland for copying another students quiz "word for word".

The class was American Studies 212-Diversity in America, Bullock said Tuesday, and involved about 10 short-answer questions based on films and readings from previous classes. Bullock said Portis sat one row behind him and one seat to the left during the quiz, and copied information, including one answer "word for word."

...

Maryland's Code of Academic Integrity states four specific violations: Cheating, fabrication, facilitating academic dishonesty, and plagiarism.

Portis -- who was super-hyped by the Terps fans after leaving UF -- was expected to play as Maryland's backup QB and perhaps split time in several games this season.

Portis is still practicing with the Terps and still enrolled at Maryland, but he will not be eligible to play football this season.

If he wasn't an athlete and just a normal student, he probably would have been kicked out of school all together.

It would appear that the student whose paper he allegedly cheated off of got a threatening phone call from the Student Affairs office after talking to the media.

Because that lead into the fact the kid was super-hyped after the transfer and was expected to get significant playing time. It was "just the backup QB" it was a player expected to contribute to the team.

Don't take it personal bro, it's just good writing to lead into the fact he was highly touted after the transfer.

It has no reflection on UF.

It doesn't matter where he's from, whether or not he transferred or simply signed up. He cheated; he got caught. End of story. He has betrayed the trust of the school & the team. If he's allowed to stay in school, even without his scholarship, he should consider himself darn lucky.

well, at least he had to cheat to try to pass the pass, and at least he was required to write something down, most other blue chip heroes in the top ranked schools were in bed, while their basket weave majors were set up for their ascent into the pros/// raves to Maryland and other ACC schools for requiring something of their athletes...!

It was later referenced the kid was super-hyped after transferring from UF. It appears to me it was to illustrate the significance of the loss. This was a kid expecting to contribute to the team.

It's kinda hard for it to be a cheap shot @ UF if it has no reflection on UF in a negative way. That doesn't make much sense.

Most college students cheat. No big deal. Dummy just not good at hiding it. I remember sitting next to the starting strong safety in history class at Ohio State. We both were cheating!

    Gator Hippy,

i will be less diplomatic than 1st and Nole. If you think the fact that Portis is referenced as a Florida transfer is a "dig" against Flordia.... you are an idiot.
Portis is called a Florida transfer to describe his athletic ablitiy and the fact Maryland needs a good quarterback this year. If you do not belive this look at EVERY preseason magazine and they will mention the kid and the fact he transferred from Florida. Why did you not complain about that?

    Wow...

    You are so "less diplomatic"...

    What a joke...

It's a "dig" simply because Portis is being discussed as a UF transfer in connection with a negative activity...

K-Hue loves to point out any negative with a UF connection...

    It's a UF/FSU thing, Tiger...

We wouldn't expect you to understand...

    Gator Hippy,

It is a compliment. Porits is a high profile player, the fact that a player from Florida would transfer to Maryland is huge for Maryland because they need a quarterback.
It is not a Flordia/FSU thing. No one would say..... Univeristy of Toledo transfer and back up quarterback for Maryland was suspended......
No one is out to get you.... If they were, they would simply say at Florida he did not have to cheat... it was that easy. And we know Spurrier thinks so because he has already said he wants the academic requirements lowered at South Carolina to match that of Florida.

    mr total tiger

if the standards are set so high for south carolina football players then spurrier wont be able to get as many good recruits...some of these people will become athletes and their grades wouldnt have mattered at all...i think everybody is mad when standards get lowered because they want that to happen to their skool so they can get good recruits...plus alot of the kids have low grades because they dont put much effort into it however they are still smart

    Cock and Fire,

I am not sure what your point is... My comment to Gator Hippy was that it is a complimemt when someone says... We have a Florida transfer coming in this year. I know every preseason magazine talked about Portis being a Florida transfer. So it is no surprise that he, after one game, is still mentioned as such. I do not think Kevin was trying to get a "dig" into Florida and that is what First and Nole was trying to point out.
My comment about Spurrier was to point out the obvious to Gator Hippy.... Had Kevin wanted to get a cheap shot in.... He could have simply said Portis did not have to cheat at Florida.... and even Spurrier knows this becasue he wants the admisions standards lowered at South Carolina to what Florida uses.... Kevin did not say that, I did. And that is not a shot at South Carolina but simply pointing out to Gator Hippy what Spurrier said two months ago.
The fact of the matter is, that Maryland, losing Portis is a large blow to a team that needs to find a quarterback this year. This team has all the pieces except quarterback. An injurty to the starter will allow teams to crowd the line and take chances on defense.

i get ur point i just thought that it wasnt a fact you were trying to state there but it is a fact but if i could see an expression on ur face while u said that id probly understand what you say better but i did like how maryland beat clemson last yeer and if they do good a good quarterback they can probly do it again

CUtiger, what is obvious is that you are new to this blog. Kevin OPENLY digs at the Gators every chance he gets. Sometimes subtly to fool you narrow minded folks, but always blatant in our eyes. There used to be a putz named "Joe" who was humorusly allowed to bash the Gators in every article he wrote. Luckily he went bye bye, or maybe has crawled so far into his Semenhole that we can't here him puking all over himself. It's what happens when your team starts to suck again. But whatever makes you feel better, you go with that. But "The weed be knowing evil lurks", and we'll go with that!

Ray Ray, T-Mac find's it quite interesting that you ask NOTaNOLE if he stutters when conversing with others.

Ray Ray, you say to gatorhippy that Florida is not yet a team above reproach. You then go on to tell gatorhippy to get over it and move on with his life.

YO, Ray Ray. The University of Florida is the defending National Champion in CFB until a new Champion is crowned.

T-Mac finds this post by Ray Ray to be very FUNNY.

T-Mac has been laughing very hard.

T-Mac says thanks to Ray Ray for the comedy!!!

Ray Ray asks NOTaNOLE if he stutters when conversing with others???

    Cock n Fire,

You are correct.. they got us last year at home, on the last play. The Terps have many returning starters and if they can find a good qb, they will have a wonderful year. That is why the loss of Portis is so big.
Not a Nole.... why don't we say, Florida transfer, Portis.... who did not have to cheat at Florida, was caught cheating at Maryland and kicked off the team. Now that is a dig.

Let's put this to rest... if you want ot belive that FSU fans are happy because Portis has been kicked off the Maryland football team, and this is Makes Florida look bad.............. then you are going to be looking over your shoulder all season for the fictional character, Mr. Evil, who lurks in the shadows.

GH, I can see why you take this thread to heart as you do. AND, K-Hue has come down on you and the Gator Mates for taking over a thread or 2. That having been said, take solace in this fact. WVU's starting DE is Johny Dingle (funny last name, wouldn't wanna be tackled by him). He transferred from FL. He didn't cheat to do it. WVU needs him, and is glad to have him. If that doesn't make you feel better, well, at least I tried. Enjoy your weekend.
