Switzer backs out of MCS poll

One of the most notable names among the hall of fame coaches slated to participate in the Master Coaches Survey, former Oklahoma Sooners coach Barry Switzer, is walking away from the poll. While Switzer told Fanblogs that he supported the idea of the poll, in the end his decision centered around the salary & the contract the MCS coaches were offered.

"We've had this talked about before," Switzer said. "It's a good concept, but I didn't hear what I wanted to hear and I'm not going to be a part of it.

"Half the coaches are divided. Some guys just want to do it, regardless if it's a terrible contract. And it was a terrible contract."

Hmmm.... Barry is saying it's all about the money and I get that, but you have to wonder if --deep down-- this isn't about sharing some of the spotlight with so many coaching legends.

Barry is my all time favorite coach. He was exciting to watch and made the game fun. I hope he is able to work out the problems and become a fulltime evaluator. The coaches will be working near fulltime for an entire season and deserve to be compensated for that time. Come on, the guys are valuable to other projects and could be earning a salary otherwise. Pay them for their time. Barry we love you and want you there to represent the Big twelve. Don't disappoint us!!!!

Come on Barry we need you there to give Oklahoma a chance to be ranked over the USC guys that kicked our butt last bowl game. When I heard that Barry would be participating, I felt like we had a chance of going back to number one. We don't mind being rated number three preseason, but we want to end up as number one. Come on Bob Stoops, we know you are as good as we believe you are. We want a winning season, all games this season. The Texas Longhorns say this is the year to stomp us into the longhorn manure. It ain't gonna happen!

Barry Switzer is one of the greatest college football coaching legends of all time. He is still and always will be highly regarded and respected in the state of Oklahoma and the big 12 conference. These coaches should be compensated for thier efforts. However, I hope they come to some sort of agreement over the contract because Barry's participation would be essential to the program!~!~!~!!! We love you Barry!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm not sure I understand why these MCS coaches have to do anything more than email in their votes every Sunday. Salary - airline trips - full time job - why is any of that necessary?

Barry did some good things, such as improving diversity in an era that still had all-white teams, and of course he won games, but the way that he did that and especially how he continues to try to justify it by continuing to say, "All programs cheat," shows that Barry Switzer is not a person or coach to be respected.

Once he confesses and admits there are asterisks on all his wins, and asterisks on all player awards that were bought and paid for, maybe then we can listen to what Barry Switzer has to say. Until then, we should turn on mute whenever he and Craig James start speaking.

"All programs cheat" shows that Barry Switzer is an honest man. The old saying 'Walk a mile in my shoes' comes to mind when refering to a man like Barry Switzer. Have you ever talked to him or the players he coached? Have you read his autobiography?

Being the head coach of a college football team is no different than being the CEO of a major corporation. Do you know what everyone is doing when there are 100's or 1,000's, or 10's of thousands of 'employees'? Coaches, alumni, boosters and countless fans all have a hand in the integrity associated with a major college football team.

I'll bet you dollars to donut holes, there's not ONE football team that someone, somewhere has not broken NCAA rules. The problems that led to Switzer leaving the Sooners are so common place now that they are a byline at best.

I agree there should be an asterisk on everything Barry Switzer has done...right or wrong! He takes responsibility for his actions and the actions of his staff and players.

    **********Barry Switzer************

The people that know Him, that know of his love for his players and the game itself, is something you or anyone else can ever diminish or tarnish by your lack of knowledge of the man.
