Comments from the Master Coaches:

.... George Welsh says “I’ve changed my mind about USC. I’m gonna vote for Texas this week because I think they have a better defense. In games like that, I don’t know if Southern Cal could score 35 points, which they might have to do.”
.... R C Slocum says" USC has demonstrated time and again that they are a championship-caliber team. All of us over the years have been involved in winning streaks and know how hard it is week after week after week when you get everybody’s best shot.”

.... Pat Dye says "watching Texas Tech I've noticed they take huge splits on the offensive line. Their QB Hodges will get killed by Texas' dominating defensive line if they stay with those splits."

....Gene Stallings says "I have voted Texas number 1 for the last three weeks, at least, and if they played USC, Texas would win."

....Don James says "I like USC as number 1 because they have beat three ranked opponents."

.... Bo Schembechler says this about USC "If you have won that many games, and you have won two back-to-back championships, and nobody has beaten you yet, then your'e the No. 1 team in the country until somebody beats you."

Texas at #1?! I've always given this poll a lot of weight, so I really will have to take a second look at the numbers.

The old maxim "Offense wins games, Defense wins championships" must have been the reasoning. I don't know enough about Texas to make the call on whether they are better than Southern California. I do NOT, however, believe that anyone should consider the #1 spot to be a 'gimme', I don't care who they are...

To each his own, but I thought polls reflected current year accomplishments, not history. I always hate that argument about last year's champion. Same goes for the Heisman, but that's a different story.

Kevin, I think it's fair to rank Texas #1. You could argue (and probably be right) that USC has had the tougher schedule, but based on what we've seen on the field, I think it's a pick 'em at best to decide who would win a neutral-site game. I'm not saying I would pick Texas, I'm just saying it's perfectly reasonable.

Alabama has the toughest schedule in the nation I think, there 6-0 right now, and still have to face Tennessee, LSU, Auburn, and Georgia in the SEC Championship game...wasn't that long ago "1992" that everybody laughed at Alabama until they ended up as the 2nd ranked team in the nation, and faced the at the time, the mighty thought to be unbeatable Miami Hurricanes...every sports writer in America expected Miami the slaughter Alabama, and we know how that turned out...Me thinks Bama just might be the cinderella team of the year again

    V. YOUNG OF UT REMINDS ME OF ALAN AMECHE, AN EARLIER OHIO STATE HEISMAN WINNER. NEITHER OF THEM EVER WORKED UP A SWEAT IN A BALL GAME.I WOULD LIKE TO SEE V.YOUNG GO TO EITHER MIAMI OR SAN FRANCISCO. MACK BROWN WILL RETIRE FROM TEXAS WHEN HE IS READY.
UT 35 USC 13 NATL. CHAMPS.
WHATEVER HAPPEN TO THE COLLEGE ALLSTAR GAME AGAINST THE NFL CHAMPS?

What Don James says is hilarious, since Texas has also beat 3 ranked teams. Nice logic, Don.

Any assessment of SOS puts Texas schedule well above USC's -- so far. Texas is blowing most teams out in the 1st & 2nd Qs, with some points by scrubs in the 2nd half, whereas USC is struggling early and piling on points when they can.

USC's defense IS finally improving, but Texas just rang up 52 first half points against the #5 defense (statistically). Statistically, Texas is top 1 or 2 in rushing offense, despite having faced the #1, #2, #3, and #5 rushing defenses, and just ran up 336 yards on what was the #1 rushing D!

now I know why these old farts are not coaching anymore. If this adds into the BCS the country will only laugh harder. Boycott ABC and BCS!!! PLAYOFF PLAYOFF PLAYOFF. ABC ruins college football, just watch Aaron Taylor comment....
