Miami: Over-rated, clap, clap, clap-clap-clap
Sounds like the ESPN & ABC guys are lining up on the "not this year" wagon for UM. This year's Miami Hurricanes football team is restocked, but not reloaded.
"Larry Coker doesn't have the talent to win the national title,'' ESPN's Lee Corso said, pointing to the lack of big-time play-makers on offense. "They have great depth on defense and a good kicking game, but I don't see a major-league running back.''ESPN's Lou Holtz said it's difficult to win a title ''until you get an established quarterback,'' and Miami lacks one. ''I don't think Miami can continue to dominate like they have,'' Holtz said. ''It's not like they're playing Temple and Rutgers'' anymore.
Trev Alberts, also of ESPN, lists the Canes among his most overrated teams and anticipates another three-loss season. And ABC's Craig James says, "There's no way you can soundly say a team is a title contender with an unproven quarterback. Because of scheduling, I put Miami a nod behind Virginia Tech in the ACC, but ahead of Florida State.''
Normally I have a real beef with the ESPN "analysis", but I can't argue with the assessment of ((gulp)) Trev Alberts that Miami is probably overrated and will probably lose three games.
Yes, the 'Canes defense is going to be really good, but they're likely to struggle (again) on offense. Despite all their talent, Miami just isn't balanced on offense, which is kinda hard to imagine when you think that they second & third string Hurricane players could be starters at several big time programs.

The Hurricanes qb Kyle Wright (6-5 208) has the talent to be great. In the spring game he went 10 of 11 and two touchdowns. I see Kyle doing fine if junior wideout Ryan Moore stays healthy this year. There is problems in the backfield with a mini disagreement in the spring between running backs coach Don Soldinger and rb Tyrone moss as soldinger told moss to cut his weight to 221 or move to fullback. This could open the door for freshman Derron Thomas. Defense is stout, period.
Miami will compete with the ACC but look for them to finish at least behind VT and FSU.

The key to Miami's success comes down to the offensive line. I promise you this, O line coach Art Kehoe will have these guys focused and hungry. If they can stay healthy they will protect Kyle Wright and he will prove all the so called experts wrong. This kid is talented and is ahead of Ken Dorsey in his first year as a starter. Studying film and reading D's will be the difference. The Canes being considered an underdog or over-rated is just what Miami needs to keep them hungry. A hungry and ticked off Miami team is a dangerous team. GO CANES!

If the defense can committ five in coverage every time, then it won't matter how far ahead Wright is. Miami's offense demands a balanced running attack. So far, it doesn't look like they'll have it - plain & simple.

I have a question for you Miami fans, awnser if you can. With the problems in the offense over the past couple years, why would larry coker go out and recruit 11 out of 17 defensive players. I know that he got the top class of defense, but he needs to get miami back to the passing and running balance days. To compete in the new ACC he must get some offensive fire power that he just does not have.

Kevin I'm convinced you're anti Miami and don't have a clue what you're talking about. Tyrone Moss broke every South Dade rushing record and is in better shape than ever to get the job done. The O-line has three of the players from Moss's highschool! If you think the #1 ranked QB coming from highschool "and Dorseys highschool at that" can't distribute the ball to the best talent in college you're all crazy??? As for Trev Albert calling Miami overrated; he did go to Nebraska where his over-rated Sooners came to the Orange Bowl and got there asses handed to our under-rated Hurricanes! I was there! I'm betting he still isn't over that. Lee Corso is a Bobby Bowden kiss ass who never picks the Canes to beat the Noles, but he did this year? Miami has been grooming K. Wright since at UM and knew he would be starting this year "unlike an FSU team who thought Sexton would be around". When they say the Offense looks rattled at times, I'm betting it's because they are playing against our #1 Defense "It still is going to be one of the best Defenses correct, or are they over-rated too". All of you UM haters are just pissed Miami will probably be at the Rose Bowl stomping on an over-rated USC who still plays no one!

Jeremy is right, but not Wright altogether. Coker has in fact grabbed some of the nations best at skilled Offensive positions : Ryan Moore, Charlie Jones, Greg Olsen, Kyle Wright, Tyrome Moss, Devin Hester, ect...the list goes on. the question is,do they gel like a single minded unified aggressive Miami offense of 2001? No. yet. when all looks right on paper and things still don't take, look to the coaching. Randy Shannon continues to field calls for head coaching spots just for what he does with the D. So, on paper, they recuited more than they needed for a loaded offense, better to ask the question why they have not panned out yet as a whole. ( some have, Hester ) to say the ingerdients aren't there is ignorant to anyone who keeps up with HS recruiting, to say they are not fitting together yet would point more to the truth.Blake said:

Dearest Jeremy,
As a longtime Hurricane fan I must ask you "What the fuck are you talking about"? When they show the Miami depth chart returning only 6 starters, this is the most biased reporting I've seen. Tyrone Moss rushed for almost the same yards per carry as Gore last year and now he's lighter and faster? Kyle Cobia was injured early last year and Quadtrine Hill started more than not. This is the first year Miami will be at least 5 deep with talented WR's. What these people have never heard of D,jenkins "who broke recieving records", S.Moss, A.Jolla, R.Moore? The only so-called starter is Lance Legget? Give me a break! Greg Olsen played TE last year and looked great. "Up and coming phenom" as stated by all reports "As good as Shockey or Winslow"? Don't see a problem there. At Center Wollschlager started last year for injuries all over the O-line. At RT people haven't heard of Rashad Butler? The O-line is back and healthier with more depth from youngsters who had to play because of injuries. The only spot with a question mark is QB. Well with a little better line "who gets to learn against our D" giving better protection and a stiffling Defense "returning every weapon but A.Rolle". Miami tears through the ACC "All Canes Conference" with 0 losses. All you haters read it and weap. Bring on un tested USC, the Canes will bang on em!Regan said:

I love it. Go ahead, everyone, knock the 'Canes. Say they have no chance at the ACC or National Title. Give the 'Canes a reason to play with a chip on their shoulder. If you know how Miami reacts to these statements, you're smiling just like I am!

Larry Coker is not recruiting like Butch Davis did. Miami is still a great football team, we all know that. What I am saying he needed to sign guys like, Mark Sanchez, Antone Smith, or Fred Rouse. These are the guys Davis would have got this year. They have some talent good talent but it is not the superstars from top to bottom that the country came to know in the Davis era. That is what i am saying. they have a chance Blake to run the table, but I do not see it happening not this year. To the Miami fans your year is next year.

Its the O-Line, plain and simple. With Winston in last year, they were 5-0, with him out they lost 3 of the next 5. it will start and end there for the offensce and sadly, two starters are hurt already ( Tella and McMeans ) BUT, nto season ending and McMeans should be 100% soon and Tella after him.Atone Smith would nto have gone to UM as he would be waiting behind three Highly touted recruits and would not see playing time. M was his fav team and first choice, but he knew this fact. Rouse went to Linclon high in Tallahassee, not leaving that area! no surprise. Willie WIlliams's sister and Dad went to FSU but he chose UM, so Coker does close when he needs to. Ths offensive coordinator and coaches need to look inward

Last year L.Washington ran 13 times for 44 yds "3.38 yds/carry"; L.Booker ran 11 times for 39 yds "3.55 yds/carry totaling 83 yds against the Canes D. After negative runs they ran for a total of 57 yds. They never hurt Miami! In fact Miami shut them the fuck down! This year FSU will have a new O-line that sent two to the NFL and this line will out perform that of old against the same Miami D-line that should be better??? On the flip side of that. Miami's O-line will be better than that of last year while again FSU is putting together a new D-line that lost it's star and Bunkley made one tackle against Miami last year??? How much did Bobby pay to get Felonies dropped to Misdemeanors for Simms and Nicholson so they don't miss the opener and where's the footage of Simms and Nicholson running stadium. Either way play them both. Cromartie caught two int's and ran one for TD last year and he's gone "the offense only popped a feild goal all game with a seasoned QB". Does anybody else see that #1 This is a lot more one sided than made out to be and #2 Bobby is scandelous as hell and the NCAA should have made him suspend Simms and Nicholson, which would never happen in the Bowden Championship System???

Here you go Boone!
First of all if Williams would have signed with the Gators none of this shit would have ever seen light. He wasn't even a Cane when it happened and they still imposed penalties that could have let him get away! What exactly was Simms and Nicholson charged with and no suspension for? Beating up girl friend? Resisting arrest without violence, but it took a stun gun to bring him down?
Willie Williams
Incident: A few days before signing a national letter of intent with Miami in March 2004, the linebacker is involved in a series of incidents during a recruiting trip to Gainesville and is charged with a felony and two misdemeanors. It is then revealed that Williams has an extensive juvenile criminal record and is on probation for a burglary when he signs with Miami. He is arrested for violating probation in Broward County and UM announces it will "delay the processing" of Williams' admissions application.Consequences: Williams is sentenced to three years probation and 250 hours of community service in July 2004.
Aftermath: Williams is admitted to UM under a list of conditions with which he must comply to keep his scholarship. One of the provisions calls for Williams to be kept off the field for the season's first four games, but he injures his knee in fall practice and misses the entire season.

You mean the same Willie Williams that was also being hotly pursued by FSU and UF? The guy who has had a clean record since being recruited?
Anyhow, the O-Line and running game are certainly the big question marks for Miami. It is hard to imagine, however, that they would be worse than last year in those areas. The line is deeper, though that depth is being tested already with some practice injuries. I feel that Moss will bounce back from a disappointing season and be a much better runner...the big question about him is his catching and blocking ability. If he can't improve in at least one of those areas, he's not going to be an every down back. Charlie Jones and Derron Thomas are certainly talented and will be pushing for carries if Moss does struggle.
Everyone has question marks at this point of the year...yes, even the mighty Trojans. Right now, I'd predict a one-loss season for the Hurricanes. It doesn't surprise me, though, that a former Seminole and a former Husker would be calling Miami overrated.Jason said:

having been to a scrimmage this year, its easy to see Darron Thomas is the best RB of the bunch. he looks alot like Portis and McGahee, very fast and shifty, more than most RB i see at ANY program, but he looks like a mediocre blocker.its safe to say the Defense, with Willie Williams fighting for playing time behind Leon Williams, will be very stingy this year, perhaps even stop the run. FSU will showcase this point one way or the other with Booker and Washington.
as for the criminals, you can't blame a recruit for thier past or what they do after leaving the program. Coker cannot be held for Williams past or Sean Taylors present situation. neither has screwed up under his watch, on UM time. the same cannot be said for A.J Nicholson and Simms. Bowden admitted on Sunshine network the other day, that life is hell when you lose to an instate rivalry and i'm sure he'd pay anything at this point to anyone to finally buy a win. too bad

Trev Alberts is a moron. He was another of those wonderful biased dolts, who felt that USC did not deserve to be in the Orange Bowl last year.
Miami over-rated. As much as I despise Miami,How can you call them "over-rated". They always play up for the big game, and if they win at FSU and at Clemson, then they have free sailing unitl the end of the year at Va.Tech. They are a serious contender for the Rose Bowl, because of their schedule. It will not matter USC will hammer them.

All you guys are idiots! Is everyone in this country blind? The only thing that kept Miami out of contention for the National title last year was a banged-up, piecemeal offensive line and a quarterback that could only play backyard ball from the shotgun. Berlin at quarterback under Coker is like trying to fit an octopus into a goldfish bowl.
The defense last year was a little shoddy at times, especially late in games, but they were being worked to death. With any glimpse of offensive firepower last year, they could have easily finished off VT, UNC, and Clemson especially with being able to eat up time and give the defense more rest between series.
Miami is so loaded this year in every position. They'll have the best scoring defense in the nation this year, if the offense has scoring power. And if they keep a healthy O-line this year, it doesn't matter who they have running the ball, a paraplegic could have a 1000 yard season behind that line. All their running backs have the talent and speed, they just need blockers. And the other thing.. Kosar won the 84 national title in his first year at QB.
The only reason Miami's rated where they are is because none of the sportswriters know how Wright will do. They only speculate and figure he'll fail. The FSU game will tell the whole story.
And finally, Trev Alberts never knows what in the heck he's talkin' about. I don't even know why he still has a job.Jeremy M said:

I like to watch ESPN College Gameday on Saturday mornings for its great video coverage and in-depth game analysis, but watching Trev Alberts mindlessly rant and rave while being wrong about games more often that not is like biting into a hot cheezy piece of pepperoni pizza only to discover hoards of raw anchovies beneath the surface. I'm with Jeremy M. With a qb who couldn't see the field (other than from the shotgun), a rare lack of quality seniors, and key injuries, the Canes had an "anomaly" down year last year. They seem healthy and restocked this year, have to be the clear favorites in the ACC despite having to travel for key games.

One note to Blake:
I like your passion, not your knowledge. Ken Dorsey went to Miramonte High School in Orinda, CA. The 2nd high profile quarterback to commit to Miami from there is Marc Guillon. He transferred from Miami to Alabama when Kyle Wright signed and Brock Berlin transferred and played sparingly and poorly last year while Brodie Carlyle was hurt. We wish Marc luck, but UM doesn't miss him.http://www.rolltide.com/Football/8770.asp
And, as much as Trev Alberts anoys me, I have to say he would be quite offended reading your post saying that he was a Sooner. Get your Big 12 schools right. Miami beat both the Sooners and the Cornhuskers for National Championships. You should at least be able to distinguish them by that fact.
Otherwise, Blake, keep rooting for the Canes!

Blake - I love you man!! A true 'Canes Fan. I am a die hard bleeding female 'Cane from birth in Miami who lives in Texas and have to suffer through the Big 12 drama of overrated under-delivering teams. I'd take a 3 loss 'Cane team over any one of these mid-west (Alamobowl headed) babies. Only in Texas can the coach of UT lose to Stoops and OK every year and get a pay raise....he just can't win the big one - oh yeah I guess it's not just in Texas, it's in Tallahassee too. :-) Remember your history folks, Dorsey's first "untested" year we lost the first game of his first season (away at Wash State) and didn't lose again for nearly 4 seasons until the Ohio State game where we were robbed by a crappy official and an ineligible player by the name of Maurice Claret - oh yes - he was ineligible. So I would expect that Kyle Wright should be the next Dorsey (who should've won the Heisman) - at least I know that he can see all the way down the field and I won't have to hold my breath every time he touches the ball. Bring on those half-assed indians - the Florida State Semi-Holes!!! :-)

Miami didn't "lose" Fred Rouse. They never offered him. His grades were so bad they couldn't. Just because he was a super prospect in H.S. doesn't mean Miami "had" to offer. They didn't.

Go ahead corso doubt us again. If i remember correctly you Didnt pick us to win in 2001 either oops. . I agree we do have some questions this yaer. But we do have the talent to overcome it. Our defence is the best in the nation WE have crazy depth at the d-line, great linebackers Mcintosh, davis, beason, o yeah and WILLIE WILLIAM. Our defensive backs are studs- Hester meriweather, reddick, threat, maxey jennings. golly they are good. Our receivers are straight playmakers Ryan moore Sinorice moss lance legget. Greg olson will be shockeyesk. Tyron moss will dominate now that he has the backfield all to himself. KYle WRigt althoug unproven is awesome. He dominated in the spring game with pretty much no starting offensive line in the game. This kid is the reel deal. So keep on hating on us go ahead. Even if we do lose some games it will be because we play good teams. UNlike USC who plays the easiest schedule in all of college football. I mean when your biggest game is cal give me a break. The pac 10 is absolutely terrible. USC has to play no one. Im so sick and tired of everyone praising USc. Tell them to play somebody first, man o man. Make them play in the sec or acc and see what happens. O yeah and the 2001 miami hurricanes would have dominated last years USC team.Sorry , I had ot get all that off my chest. Miami doesn't have the will to play VT. How can they hope to hang in vs. USC? Miami will lose 2 games in the ACC this year. They will get upset on the road, and lose at VT. They don't have an O Line now, it has been decimated by injuries. They have receivers, but noone to stand up to a dominant pass rush. Kyle Wright may get injured early this year. As for running backs, Moss will be sufficient to win most games, but will struggle periodically. If Kyle can't move, he might get hurt early on. Once that happens, you guys will be like Oklahoma, losing to scrub teams who come out inspired.

Every year Miami is called "over rated" the real overrated teams are the teams like Texas, Nebraska, USC, Ohio State, Tennessee etc - who always lose the "big one". Like Larry I have been watching the Canes since Rice used to whoop up on them for Homecoming - 99 times out of 100 - Miami takes the big ones. Everyone loves to hate a winner - mark my word the dynasty is back. Berlin was never the type of q-back that Miami needs - Kyle Wright fits into the Kosar,Testaverde,Toretta,Young, Dorsey mold. Whenever they have tried to go against the mold with the likes of Berlin - they go off track. Miami's 3rd team O-line can start for most schools so don't count on that being a problem. Ditto with the Receivers and backs. We know they will DOMINATE on defense - I say if you are counting Miami out - you better count again. OK lost to TCU first game of the Season - but Texas will still choke and lose to them - Clemson (overrated) lost to a non-rated A&M team - The only thing you can really count on is Death, Taxes and Miami delivering a good season. Many people are thankful for a 2-3 loss season - In Miami 1 loss is unacceptable and not frequent. You are talking about a team that lost 2 games in 4 years until Berlin - the dynasty is back and the ACC will not hinder the climb.

It was just as i said in posting #15 "Its the O-Line, plain and simple" You will hear the press blaming all kinds of crazy things like a bad snap, penalties, ejections, ect....but 9 sacks, the most allowed by a UM O-Line ever, is what made the difference. I can honestly say that UM dominated everything but the scoreboard, just watch the game again and listen to how quiet the crowd was. Kyle Wright is clearly all the hype and then some, his O-line just let him down over and over. UM' reciever were better, TE was better, QB was better, Defense was same, RB was same......UM gave this one away and Larry Coker better eliminate the sloppy penatlies and put a fire under the O-lines ass or they can expect to lose to more than V-Tech, startgin with an impressive Clemson on the road next week. now, thier back are to the wall, any hope of a rematch means not a single loss to make it to the ACC game in Dec. I am sticking to my prediction: they Canes will rise or fall with thier O-line, period.Jay said:

Fire Larry Coker!
This team has the talent. Sure Kyle Wright is green, but with a little time to throw the ball he can be dangerous.
Larry Coker is not a motivator, he is trying to use talent to win with no coaching. Larry needs to get this team disciplined. They look like the late 80's Jimmy Johnson team with bad attitudes, but they do not follow through on the field. This folks comes down to nothing but coaching and discipline.
It's time for Miami to get rid of this old coach with no fire and find a young coach like the gators who is actually interested in winning.

Dan Werner moving into Offensive coordinator is the first screw up that needs to be unscrewed. Miami's offense is S-O-O-O-O predictable. Also, Art Kahoe needs to be put under sever fire as O-Line coach. then, after these two sore areas are addressed should anyone talk of Coke being axed. If these season ends like the last one, it may be time to consider Butch Davis agian. If he would, that is...

And they are in the ACC (no Temple, no Pitt). Art Kehoe was quoted as saying that they will kick any team's ass this year, but giving up 9 sacks to a weak FSU front line is not ass-kicking...And oh yeah, they gotta play VT..Good luck Canes, I still Luv YA!

FIRE LARRY COKER!
This guy is horrible! The 2001 team he inherited from Butch Davis was in my opinion the greatest college football team ever. From that high point of the program we have steadily gotten worse each season. First we lost to Ohio State in the national championship game, then we lost to Va. Tech AT HOME with the conference championship on the line, and now finally this year we lost to FSU. 3 things matter at Miami- 1. National Champs- 2. Conference Champs- 3. Beat FSU- in that order. We failed on all three counts this year. Every thing that Butch Davis did to rebuild Miami Larry Coker is throwing away. Sure he wins 8-9 games at least, but that is because a monkey could recruit talent to UM. It takes a coach to put it all together and until Larry Coker is gone I think we can expect more mediocre 8-9 win seasons.Rock the Swamp said:

I guarantee that more than half of these "miami fans" were not fans of the canes until about 4 or 5 years ago. I was born in Miami, but moved. I visit my relatives in Miami every year. When they won the championship, everybody was wearing Miami hats and had flags in their yards. Ever year since then, their fan base has died. When i went down there earlier this year, No one had those flags, no one had any hats. Have you ever been to a Miami home game? The 1st 6 or 7 rows are completely empty, a little more than half the stadium is pretty full. The upper section is pitiful looking, there is about 1 person for every 7 or 8 seats. Not only that, but their stadium is very quiet, but I might be saying that b/c im used to going to games at the Swamp. Miami is ovverated, and they proved that last night. Their offense is horrible. I could tell when they played against FSU. When they beat VA TECH, their defense did all the work. If Miami doesnt get their offense situated, they will go straigt to the bottom of the ACC. GO GATORS!!!!!!!!!! ROCK THE SWAMP!!!!!!!!!!
