Schiano to meet with Miami; Rutgers prepares counter

Rutgers Head Coach Greg Schiano will speak with University of Miami AD Paul Dee today about UM's vacant head coaching position. The Hurricanes made contact with Rutgers on Sunday to notify them of the interview.

There is speculation that the Schiano could also receive an offer today, since Miami is already familiar with him from his previous stint as Defensive Coordinator for the 'Canes. It is reported that the offer would start at $1.8 million per season, slightly more than Miami was paying Larry Coker.

In an attempt to fend off the Hurricanes, Rutgers is said to be preparing a new contract for Schiano at approximately $1.2 - $1.3 million per year for 10 years, plus bonuses. Schiano's current deal is guaranteed at $875,000/ year, plus bonuses.

As expected, the deal also will include guarantees to complete Schiano's vision for facility and stadium improvements and expansion, facts that add to Rutgers' confidence it can retain the sizzling coach because Schiano would be hard-pressed to find another job where he has as much control and input.

Rutgers has also enlisted the help of New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine, who has met with Schiano to discuss how to improve the facilities at Rutgers.

If Schiano is not interested in the Miami job, Texas Tech head coach Mike Leach might be interested.

    I dunno...

This guy obviously has Rutgers eating out of the palm of his hand...

Why leave there in exchange for getting kicked in the balls every time you lose a game?

    gatorhippy,

Rutgers is no better than any other school in terms of loyalty to their coaches. Now that they have had some success, they will never accept another .500 season. College football boosters have short memories and expect to win every single year. He has a better chance to be in the hunt every year at Miami. The best players in country will go to Miami. At Rutgers, you would be lucky to keep the best local kids at home.

First, I want to thank W.Virginia for beating rutgers. you really helped us Canes fans out a lot.

I would also like to thank that Rutgers kicker for missing that multimillion dollar fieldgoal that would have sent Ruthers to the Orange bowl instead of the....Texas Bowl? That kid might have just kicked Schiano right to my Canes!!! I......LOVE.....YOU.....MAN!

It's funny...Miami Hurricanes (Orange Bowl) stadium holds almost double the fans as Rutgers, yet Rutgers problably had higher attendance this season...Just a thought.

I understand what your saying but a 3 loss season at Rutgers wins you laurels while a 3 loss season at the U puts your @$$ on the hot seat...

    Just ask Larry Coker...

Even a 9-3 record and an ACC championship this year would have got him canned...

6-6 record din't have anything to do with it...

    C-DOGG:

I was watchin' that game, thinking exactly what you were, and could not agree more. I just knew that Rutgers wasn't gonna get er' done. Sciano is more likely to go now. VolStrike3 has also got some great points. Now, the administration might even come to beleive, that Rutgers always belongs in the Top Three of the BEast. That isn't much different than Miami belonging in the TOP THREE of the whole country. Weird things happen for even stranger reasons than we can know. It all gets sorted out in the end. What if Florida does upset Ohio State? Then, I guess most everyone would be a moron - except for all the Gator/SEC fans. Now, wouldn't that be a strange twist of fate? After everyone predicted that the SEC would be robbed they have their opportunity. Also, they got Notre Dame right where they want them. I still can't beleive that they sent the Irish into that Hornets nest. Let's see how many calls go to "the luck of the Irish". I'll bet that it is many - just to keep them in that game.

What a fricken mistake it would be for the Canes to even give TTU's Mike Leach consideration for the coaching job. The Canes have enough of a bad image that they don't need some smart ass, smack talking ("Can't relate to the type of teams beaten by Missouri") coach from Texas to help their dreadful situation. Personally, I'd like to see Leach and the rest of the Texas schools leave the "Big Eight" (only so much bravado we can handle: "Texas is god's gift to football, etc." - by the way, good representation at the Big Twelve championship! Just joking!), and it would be great to see Miami deal with his stupidity (because they both deserve each other), but man, what a ridiculuous concept of those two getting together. Next Miami will want Bobby Knight coaching their B-ball! Come to think of it, Texas Tech really hired two aces with Knight and Leach. Those two should always work together at the same university so that the rest of us know where they are safely stored (kind of like nuclear waste that North Koreans - and now Texans - like)!

After last night, it's starting to look like Miami won't need Bobby Knight to build a basketball program.
As for football, I'd still rather have Schiano, but whoever comes is not gonna walk in and win the ACC. It's getting tougher and tougher to build dynasties.

Actually, Rutgers only had 2 losses for the season - Cincy and W. Virginia.

Just trying to do my part in support of fellow Big East fans.

Schiano is staying put. Oh well Canes fans. My guess is that he is waiting for Joe Paterno to "retire". I can repect that. He sure would have left Miami immediately if the Penn State job became available.

I may be wrong...But I think Schiano already stated he is staying in Jersey. Thanks but no thanks....the ACC sucks.

This job would be a step down for him at this point.
