Freeman quits 'Canes, QB U now QB-less

The only quarterback on the Miami Hurricanes roster with game experience -- starter Kirby Freeman -- has asked to be released from his scholarship and will transfer. Freeman considered transferring last season, but decided to return under first-year head coach Randy Shannon.

His career numbers at Miami are 92 of 197 for 1,311 yards, with 12 touchdowns and 16 interceptions.

Freeman's departure leaves the Canes with just one scholarship QB - redshirt freshman Robert Marve. Marve missed the 2007 season after breaking his hand in a car accident this summer.

Freeman, who would need an NCAA waiver to retain eligibility at the FBS level (DI-A), is said to be considering a transfer to Baylor.

I don't think this is gonna bother anybody in the UCG camp...

Freeman quiting is a good thing for Miami. He wouldn't have played in 2008 with Marve being healthy (based upon how successful Marve was at running the practice squad). This frees up a scholarship that was wasted on a QB that doesn't have the talent to play DI-A football.

I feel sorry for Baylor if Freeman does transfer there, as he will continue he great job of completing passes to the other team.

    Kevin,

Did Marve break his hand in the accident?

All the previous reports that I had read stated that Marve had sustained lacerations on both his left hand and wrist but there were no reports of a broken hand.

It's one thing when ya decide to leave a place, and everyone's sorry to see ya go. It's another when no body gives a rats a$$. (Shades of ole Coondawg...)

I sincerely hope this works out for him and Baylor. At least, it would be nice for Baylor to pick up a quality player. BUT, from what I'm hearin...

I must admit...he did help beat the Noles in Tallahassee (although he tried to give that one away too) but that win could only take him so far. I don't know how he was so highly touted to begin with. He was awful

At least now some people outside of Baylor will know they name of Baylor's quarterback.

I'm shocked and awed (lol) that Baylor would even want him. As a Canes fan this could not make me happier, dont let the door hit ya where the good lord split ya. Guess he got that "U" tattoo for nothing, maybe they can alter it to look like a Baylor Bear lol. I agree with the one poster who said it makes more scholarship room. Plus we have Miami Northwestern Jacory Harris comming in and I doubt they will red shirt him. We will be fine. as far as I am concerned Miami should have asked freeman to release him from his scholarship well before he asked us lol.

kershawdw, have you ever watched Baylor? I can't say that they ever look that good. As for the tatoo, he could just put a B over it and it would look like the Baylor symbol on their helmets.

There's nobody crying over this here in Miami. There was little question that he would not be the starter next year, and this is obviously the best choice for him.

Kirby always had a lot of heart and gave it his all (which can't be said for many of the 2007 Canes), and I give him my respect for that. But - as great as the drive against FSU was (I was there), his performance against N.C. State in the Orange Bowl was pretty much the nail in the coffin (I was there too, unfortunately).

Good luck to Kirby, because he seems to be a standup guy, even if he was a pretty horrible quarterback.

It's great to be a Miami Hurricane!
P.S. - No hat tip for me? I commented on this yesterday! :0)

@#11....I remember your post Cane Mutiny. I seen this coming for a while. That NC State game(if I recall) sealed his fate. Great physical skills, not a brain cell in his head(reading defenses). At least the coaching staff was honest with him.

    Go Canes! Get some(more) recruits!

@Tampa Hurricane - I was going back through past reports and saw the broken hand in a Miami Herald piece. I'm trying to find the link again.

I don't remember Marve's specific injury, but I do seem to remember there was surgery involved.

As for Freeman, I second, third, or whatever number we're up to, what everyone else is saying. Kirby gave it his all, but sadly it wasn't enough. The NC State game was pitiful, but I got to blame some of the coaching for that, too. They did absolutely nothing to help him out. No screens, no play action. It was so bad that we were down by 3, with 2:00 to play, and we got to go 80 yards. We didn't throw once. We go 60 yards in 2:00 minutes against a team with 10 in the box, and somehow got it done and got the tie. We still should've won that game, but Kirby, offensive coaching, and kickers all conspired against us!

Like most 'Cane fans, I hope the best for Freeman, be it at Baylor or wherever. I know the kid really wanted to do well at Miami, and eventually realized that wouldn't happen.

With better coaching, he could have turned out much differently, but that's a realm I don't know much about...

It's probably for the best for the 'Canes to break in a new generation at QB; and Marve seems to be the guy to begin the restoration of "Quarterback U".

Hope all works out for everyone...
