Coming soon: Another Miami-Notre Dame game?

Don't look now (and that means you, Matt Hayes) but there is starting to be some talk of a possible resumption of the classic Miami Hurricanes - Notre Dame Fighting Irish football series.

Hurricane athletic director Kirby Hocutt commented on the potential for playing UND again -- either in a regular series or in a one-off neutral site game -- when he was asked why Miami wasn't renewing its series with Florida International.

Hocutt said UM won't play FIU but wants to book marquee opponents and would be interested in speaking with Notre Dame when it hires an athletic director about one of its new annual prime-time neutral site NBC games.

Miami and Notre Dame played a regular series from 1971 - 1990, although they skipped a game in 1986. Depending on which side of the fence you came down on, this was generally regarded as the Canes vs. Catholics series or the Catholics vs. Crooks series.

Regardless, Miami - Notre Dame harkens back to a great era in college football. While it would be awesome to see these two schools go back at it, I hope they wait long enough for both teams to return to prominence. Otherwise, this game would be an insult to the amazing games between the Canes & Irish, especially the classics of the late 1980s.
