Les Miles to Michigan talk heating up again

It's been nearly three months since the last Les Miles is the next Michigan coach thread at Fanblogs, so Brian's post today at MGoBlog seems like the perfect impetus to discuss the rising drumbeats once more.

As many know, Les Miles is a Michigan man. He played there, he coached there, and many believe his heart is at Michigan.

So, if the position came upon after this season, would Les Miles be interested? Well, he isn't saying no.

I don’t want you to take the fast, hard line. I want you to hear me out.

I am indebted to that school and those people. Not Lloyd or the president there. But the tremendous memory of Bo Schembechler, and the quality that I was exposed to both academically and in football at the school. So I cannot in any way change that view. That’s an honesty. I can’t tell you my appreciation. My wife, my first born, my entire life is marked by my time at Michigan. Yet, I’m in a wonderful place here. I’ve got a great team. If I lose or have any distraction to that fact, that I would spend fun time, my time on something else like the view of that, would be a mistake. It would be a mistake and I really can’t.

When I was a young coach, I had a school call me. It was so distracting. I did everything that I was supposed to do, but it affected me. Things like this really have no day-to-day change in the way I do things. I woke up at 4 a.m. today and I’m daydreaming, I’m not thinking about anything else but how to make this football team better. That to me is the right feel. I have great confidence in Michigan and they have a great staff there and they’re going to do great things this year. I have no designs and nor has it ever been displayed to me that I’m the next guy, by anybody. I have given little or no thought to things that are not imminent. I really don’t want to spend any more time talking about another program.

Lloyd Carr won a national championship and that staff is as quality as there is. I fully support what they’re doing there.

Readers Digest version..... Miles is the HC at LSU. Lloyd Carr - his friend - is the HC at Michigan. The job is not open & Miles is not going to talk about it, even if he wants it. That's just the way Miles is, says John Wangler.

When and if the opportunity comes up, I think will Les will consider it strongly. I don’t think there’s reason to tap dance around it. He’d have to look at it seriously. Les is not going to campaign for any job. He’s a friend of Lloyd’s and they worked together on the same staff. You don’t talk about that stuff now.

Wangler, a close fried of Miles hedges a little, but still seems to indicate that Miles would leave LSU for Michigan if offered the job. Miles himself is not saying no, which also leaves the door open.

The NYT notes that even LSU knows that Miles has a heart for Michigan.

No one knows this better than L.S.U., which has a $1.25 million buyout if Miles, 53, leaves for Michigan, compared to a $500,000 buyout if he leaves for another job.

For the moment, the ball is in Lloyd Carr's court. He's the coach of Michigan and -- despite indications that he may step down after this season -- UM seems intent on allowing Carr to write his final chapter, rather than forcing the issue. As DFP says, only he can end the speculation, but -- eventually -- uncertainty will hurt the Wolverines both on and off the field.

People haven't really given Miles credit for anything he's done at LSU yet, and if he was to win a MNC this year, that would change, but it would also serve as his walking papers. That would be all the validation he needed in Michigan's eyes to bring him back home.

It's a pity that such a good historic team as LSU has a revolving door in the coach's office. LSU never did have that 'signature' coach, the one who stayed for a quarter century and left his indelible stamp on the program. Bama had Bear, Auburn had Shug, and Georgia had Dooley. The closest LSU ever had was Charlie McClendon, but he never endeared himselves to Tiger fans because he couldn't beat Alabama--especially at home. Ever since then, the average tenure of an LSU coach has been about 5 years.

If LSU ever does get a good coach for the long haul, the rest of the SEC might be in trouble. LSU gets all the good players in Louisiana, and now can recruit strong regionally and nationally due to the success they've had in recent years.

I don't normally like to make predictions, but if I did, I'd say you'll see old Les walking the sidelines in Ann Arbor next year. Next!!!

If the job at Michigan becomes available, and IF Miles wants the job, I could almost guarantee you that no one at LSU will know anything about it until weeks after he has accepted the position. You can’t believe one word that he tells you when it comes to changing jobs. Just ask anyone at Oklahoma State. With that being said, I think he will be the HC at Michigan.

I think you'll see LSU throw Saban-money at Miles and make it very tough on him to leave.

Why are you guys misspelling this guy's name?

It's coach Lesticles after this past Saturday, don't you know?

Les Miles is now 27/34 on 4th downs in his LSU tenure, including the 5 from Saturday, and the first one, which came on the first offensive series of his LSU tenure, backed up in his own endzone against Arizona State (Which he didn't call; his punter, Chris Jackson, did, LOL!)...

Look, if he leaves, I can't say that this guy is too smart...If you were at the Florida madness from Thursday night on at LSU, then you saw what he sees...

The guy has the world by the short and curlies...I mean, what more does this guy want?

The call to home can be quite the siren song...But, he's on top of a freaking fire-breathing, dragon slaying, football playing 400 pound Siberian/Bengal hybrid mixed Tiger named Roscoe that goes by Mike...and why he'd want to get off to trade into a Yugo-like program that-unfortunately for Big Blue-Michigan has become, I could only say it would be to try to help resurrect the Maize & Blue...

I'd expect even more dramatic results than Zooker at Illinois this year...You're seeing speed in the Big 10, finally, thanks to Zook's recruiting...and Miles would continue that trend...

At this point, we thank Saban for waking Mike up, and Les is riding on his back right now, but I think any damn coach in the COUNTRY would take this job if Miles left, Lloyd Car included, LOL...

Just my $0.02...but I think he's a Tiger next season, as well...

I guess we'll have to endure this talk until the season ends...and beyond. If he does win a NC at LSU then I think the chances of him leaving become even greater as he's acheived all he can at LSU. I don't want to knock what Mich has in Ann Arbor, don't get me wrong, but how do you leave a program that is on or near the top and poised to stay there for a very long time to pack up and move to a program that is in a downward spiral and looking for answers. I will say this...don't underestimate a man's heart. I firmly believe his is in Michigan but I think the results of this season will be the ultimate determining factor. Do I want him to stay??? Without a doubt...but am I concerned about him leaving???.....no. If he does leave, what coach wouldn't want to be handed the keys to this program and told to drive it as far as he could? It's a vending machine of talent that replenishes itself year in and year our. All the Tiger haters out there...don't get me wrong. I'm not being cocky...all I'm saying is that now that the program has firmly entrenched itself in the upper echelon of college football (not necessarily the top, though at the time, that's where it is) how do you just walk away and say, no thanks. Time will only tell but in the meantime, there's still alot of football left with no gimmies on the schedule.

With that being said, here's hoping Michigan can run the table and finish high in the BCS standings and everybody lives happily ever after...lol.

In my mind Les Miles is definately going. But like a couple of you guys say he will most likely do it the wrong way by denying it until the very end and then take off to Ann Arbor. Why can't the college coaches just say it like a man that they are leaving instead of trying to sneak out?

    @TE - Lesticles.... LMAO! That's awesome.

I agree with y'all that LSU is a premiere position, made so by its place in CFB and the extreme fan support that LSU receives. Miles is now officially the King of Louisiana. And yet still....

TE is correct. "Home" is a siren's song. Until LSU becomes "home", he will always be tempted by the lifted skirt and perfumed inner thigh of Michigan.

    Gatorstud,

The Terminator would've found it difficult to tackle Tim Tebow being clutched, grabbed, & held as badly as Glen Dorsey, Favorite, & Tyson Jackson were Saturday...

Riddle me this...How does the MOST penalized team in the conference get two for 8 yards on Saturday?

Why is it that LSU's last FOUR opponents have not had offensive holding called against them?

Don't get me started on the officiating Saturday night...It was abysmal that they couldn't see the itnerior Gator line pulling Dorsey's jersey off like Scarlett O'Hara's pulling down the curtains of Tara for her in Gone With the Wind on Saturday...

The third & Goal where Tebow scored on a keeper was teh most atrocious non-call I've ever witnessed on a football field, and we have endzone seats, and it was done in space, without anyone or any other players blocking the zebra's vision...

It was a joke...and there is NO arguing that.

Are you actually CRYING about officiating in a win?

    Face it...

Dorsey got manhandled similiar to last year in Hogtown...

Take your win, be happy and stop sniveling about officiating...

i also noticed that you didn't mention the last fourth down lsu got...i have watched to replays..he didn't make it...the refs gave him that on...i can't believe meyer didn't challenge the spot....

    And seriously...

Miles went for 4th down conversions due to lack of confidence in his FG unit...

Not because of an abundance of confidence in his offense...

    Simple as that...

Even better is the love Miles is feeling now as opposed to the vitrolic venom that was being spewed from the mouths of LSU fans last year after the Gainesville loss...

It's amazing that beating the Gators can make a coach look like a genius or a ballsy risk taker...

Actually, it's down right flattering and a testement to exactly what kind of pedestal standard that other SEC schools hold beating the Gators by less than a touchdown to in comparison to progress and greatness that their own programs are making...

    Thanks for the flattery...

Who said I didn't think the Gators were a ridiculously good opponent? Evidently you guys weren't here on Sunday...I wonder why?

Yeah, you're right, we didn't blow your doors off, but we did shut you out in the 2nd half, dominating time of possession, giving up a fluke score to Ingram from Tebow on a 37 yard busted coverage where Steltz was trying to jump a wide receiver screen-which was his 1st read-and left the tight end streaking down the hashmark for an easy 7...The first of its sort this year for this team...

As for Tebow...The kid's really good. We weren't prepared for the interior rush that you guys went to for the first time all year. Kastahn Moore really stepped up as well-which I again mentioned Sunday (but don't let my graciousness then get in the way of your preconceived notions after the fact).

I just find it hard to believe you guys haven't attracted more quality backs...This is Meyer's third year, and he's obviously recruited youngsters at most of the other positions, but its obvious he leans on Tebow a tad too much. I think it's not necessarily because Moore's a bad back, either. I think he's a good one. I think it's because Meyer doesn't trust him toting the rock. The fumble was very, VERY unfortunate for him, because you've got to worry that Meyer will again back his touches down and lean more on Tebow, and even though the kid put up a whale of an effort in a loss, leaning on him this much could have him ending up like Pat White. Perhaps that's a bad comparison though, as they're NOTHING alike, running the same offense, but with completely different styles, but, the point is, with him getting so many carries, injuries could hurt.

By the way...What the hell happens to your offense if Tebow gets a high ankle sprain like Matt Flynn did earlier this year? Wow is that guy important to your offense! You guys recruiting any backs? You definitely need them.

All in all-as I said Sunday (again referencing that for you who chose not to come show your faces)-I think that was a titanic tilt between two teams of equal talent, and it was won on heart.

As for the idiocy regarding the replays...I've seen CBS replays showing the first down "line" and one without it, and the spot was JUST FINE. I'll youtube all of them for you to see for yourself, but, again, let's not devolve the effort on the field.

We didn't blow you out. You didn't lose this game. LSU earned the hardest fought victory in recent memory...and played quite possibly what will go down as the greatest game played in Tiger Stadium since the 1979 loss to USC, 3-0...

Congrats, Gators...and here's hoping we see you-at full strength again-in Atlanta...I look forward to having a healthy Flynn & Doucet, and I hope you guys are distraction free then, as well.

    Glad you were wondering...

I slept late in NOLA on Sunday...

First off, I had a 20 minute (Or should I say hour & a half, including traffic) drive back to my house. Sorry I don't have to make weekend trips out of LSU games...

I've seen and experienced as much-if not more-of New Orleans as you have, but thanks for the attempts at demeaning and belittling me.

I guess I wouldn't want to log on to taste any crow if I were going to hit up Cafe Du Monde or go stroll through the French Market, either, so I can't say I blame you...

But, having said that, Obviously you haven't been paying attention to what I said previously, and also, once again, thanks for ignoring the forest for the sake of the sapling as you went out of your way to ignore a rehashing of my previous testaments to the quality program you're blessed to be a fan of. Instead, you'd rather focus on any sleight, alleged, perceived, misinterpreted though it may be, in order to project some air of superiority over me because I live just outside of Baton Rouge and you had the good sense to combine the best of both worlds: LSU, and one of the world's most beautiful, cultured, and character-laden cities.

So sorry there's nothing quite as compelling as a trip to New Orleans near the beautiful, thriving, cultured Metropolis that is Gainesville, Florida...

That final score is a bitter pill, isn't it? Or is it the bile in the back of your throat that's causing all the vitriol this afternoon? It's okay...I was here, where you are, back in '03...I promise my inferiority complex wasn't inducing me to throw vacations in Florida fans faces to try to save some face on my part...

Pretty pathetic when all you have to throw in someone's face after a loss is a vacation...even after they tirelessly compliment your program...

    You stay classy, Gatorhatoradedrinkinghippy...

Hippy - TE has given the Gators plenty of props for making LSU gut out a win. It could have gone the other way, but it didn't. He certainly isn't rubbing anyone's nose in it. (Or at least it doesn't come off that way to me.)

    TE (#18):

    Ummm...

You started the trash talk about Gator fans not being here on Sunday and wondering where they were...

    To quote you again, TE:

"Evidently you guys weren't here on Sunday...I wonder why?"

    I merely informed you why...

So if you don't want to know perhaps you shouldn't have asked or at least let us know it was rhetorical...

With regard to that, I did have better things to do than to discuss this game while I was visiting NOLA, a place that I actually resided for five years just three blocks from Jackson Square and have "family" that had just recently returned after having their homes finished from post-Katrina remodels...

In addition to coming every two years for the UF/LSU contest since 1981 as a preteen with my family...

I come into town around Christmas and Mardi Gras season practically annually for visits with the above folks because I miss living there so much and will be bringing my kids up for their first Mardi Gras parades this coming season...

    So again...

Not throwing anything in your face, TE...

Merely answering your question and rebutting your assumption...

And sorry, TE, but no it's not a bitter pill to swallow when beating the perceived #1 team in the country for 58 minutes and 51 seconds in their own stadium with a team of freshmen and sophmore starters that handled themselves with the poise of upperclassmen in a hostile environment...

    As for me...

My class is intact, big guy...

Too bad the same can't be said about the four LSU knuckleheads that got arrested for jumping into our charter bus and hurling obscenities at largely over-50 contingent of Gator fans riding said bus...

As well as, the other Tiger jackasses throwing bottles and rocks at cars and busses as we were leaving the stadium area on the way out of town...

So perhaps instead of questioning my class...

Perhaps you should be lecturing your scads of LSU bretheren on showing some class themselves(as you have shown) and act like they have been here before...

Rather than jumping to conclusions of exactly what life experiences people have had and then attempting to denigrade the cultural differences in different regions of the South...

    Just a thought...

    Hippy,

I've tried-over and over-to be complimentary. This is a message board, man. But, you've obviously got a problem that goes farther than that.

I can't help you. I tried to point out that I was here talking great about your program, etc., etc., but-over and over again-you ignore it to try to throw something into others faces...

Every blog and message board from Every Day Should be Saturday to The Virtual Swamp has gone out of their way to talk about how wonderful an experience their time in Baton Rouge was...

    You can't...

But, I tell you what...Go ask the Baton Rouge Police Department how many Florida fans started a HUGE BRAWL at the Varisty after the game, and how many actually admitted to starting it at the scene and were arrested for it. Seriously, you do NOT want to start an "LSU fans aren't classy" diatribe with me...I can go into details any time you like, but wait...that would sort've screw up your "Florida fans have a monopoly on class," spin, wouldn't it?

Matter of fact, this is the last post directed toward you of any kind on this site. I've never run into this sort've problem in my time here, and again, this is a simple message board. I've been very complimentary to your school, your team, and even you...Tried to point out again and again where I was coming from and how great your team is...

I get nothing but disrespect in return...So I'll end with this...

They day they start handing out W's for winning for 58:51 of football games, is the day I become a Florida Fan. Till then, it's definitely GREAT to be...an LSU Tiger!

The only place that I have been to a football game where the home team acted classy after a win or loss was in College Station. That doesn't mean nothing bad happened there either, but I have never seen a campus show respect for the other team more than there.

I have been to home games at Florida and LSU. It is ridiculous to call another school classless based on your personal experience, because you know that someone from your school has done the same thing that you have seen done by the other school. If you think that it doesn't happen then you are being ignorant.

    TE (#20):

Wow, I think you really are taking it all wrong...

I paid you a compliment in the last paragraph...

Flat out saying you were a classy guy compared to what I experienced on the way out...

And have never once even questioned your class...

And yet you continue with smart ass comments...

I have friends who TEACH at LSU and have worked in other forms of administration at the school all the way up to Athletic Director...

As a matter of fact, I tailgated with them before the game and encountered no problems and other than the incidents outlined above had no problems with any other fans as most were extremely complimentary of the Gators young squad and very cordial on the way out...

    And yes...

I am EXTREMELY PROUD of the way this group of young UF players played in a game that no one (including yourself) gave them a chance to win...

The second leading tackler on the UF defense (Joe Haden) was a true freshman who was tested continually and rarely beaten all game long...

OL Markice Pouncey, another true freshmen, had his way with all world gorilla Glenn Dorsey all night long (though above you claim he was held all night, remember that?)...

While no one plays for moral victories, it certainly allowed the bright light of what may be to come in the future of Gator football and definitely scares the bejeezus out of those that know they have to get their licks in this year...

I haven't once stated anywhere that UF has a "monopoply" on class...

As a matter of fact, you started the mud slinging in the "class" arena in your previous post...

I merely pointed out that when discussing "class" there are morons on both sides of the fence...

As you pointed out with the trouble at the Varsity (which by the way is a great place; I also enjoy Fred's which was formerly owned by a friend's father)...

    Anyway...

I didn't feel there was anything disrespectful in any of my posts towards you...

Sorry if you felt that way...

#27 - All I said was that I have never been to another place where the fans were as complimentary, anywhere. That's the only place that I haven't seen fights happen.

Of course that doesn't mean they didn't due the same immature bullshit that happens everywhere. It does happen everywhere, and I know it happens there too, but that is my point. Even though I have seen that crowd act nice after wins and losses, to claim that they don't starts fights too would be ignorant. A&M just has more fans that are at least nice towards the opponent than anywhere I have been.

For the record, I'm not going anywhere, just not conversing with you, anymore, anymore.

As an aside: Can you possibly drop anymore heirs in a single thread? I was vacationing, I lived right near Jackson Square, I know teachers at LSU, I know people all the way up to Skip Bertman, I know the former owner's twice removed cousin of a barber's last owner of Fred's...

Trust me, you're a buzzing fly...Fanblogs is way too much fun for your ilk to make me say bye...You think too much of yourself...in more ways than one...

Again, have fun conversing with everyone else. You're not worth it...

rude fans are everywhere...i also encountered a few leaving the stadium sat. night......it happens....whenever you are a visitor at a rivals school the you can count on bad fans....i don't hold lsu or their loyal fans accountable...YOU JUST CAN'T HELP STUPIDITY....you just have to let it slide.....i can say that while watching the game...the lsu fans near me were very cordial during the whole game...even when they were coming back in the second half...there were som ribbing, but it was all in fun...and as we were leaving i had lsu fans (while wiping sweat from thier brows) shake our hands and wish us luck the rest of the season....and even a few encouraged us by telling us that tebow will get us back to the promise land within the next two years....

    all-in-all...i had a great time......thank's baton rouge...

    go gators...and hokies

    JFC...

I even tried to let you see that I was willing to make amends by apologizing if you took some of my statements the wrong way...

    Ok, pouty Tiger...

The "I'm not gonna talk to you anymore" treatment is fine with me...

    Not breaking my heart...

I get it from my five year old all the time...

    TE and gatorhippy

You two are quite the verbal jousters...

Please don't break up. This is good reading. I'm learning all kinds of new words.

BTW- all of that jousting and NO curse words. Excellent!!!

I'm just looking around my office for a jar of Grey Poupon to offer to Gatornamedropperhippy right now...

Glad you all get a laugh...He seems alright, but I think perhaps now he might sense the frustration one gets out of a person who continually keeps ignoring what you're saying to push a point that doesn't exist...

Which is what his issue was regarding me and my conciliatory (How's that one, Rammer?) tone-or his perceived lack of it-earlier and this past weekend...

@ 35 Rammer, I was thinking the same thing, made me realize that I'm just a lightweight smack talker to the Texas boy's--I'm taking lessons

    Exactly

I'm taking lessons too, but I doubt I will ever be that eloquent (how about that one, TE?) with words.

Umm, in other news, I think talking to coaches about other schools not even half way through the season is a slap in the face to Carr, Miles, and the programs they represent. The least these sports writers can do is wait until the season ends.

    Eye of the Tiger

    Agreed...

These sports reporters put these coaches in sticky situations. The coaches can't say they are leaving in the middle of the season... and they can't say they are not leaving for fear of being called a liar when the season is over.

There is a whole lot of football to be played. They need to back off and let Les Miles do his job (which is winning football games)

    Kevin (#14):

"Question - Jim Harbaugh @ Michigan???"

Since Harbaugh said this earlier this year...:

"Michigan is a good school and I got a good education there,” he said, “but the athletic department has ways to get borderline guys in and, when they’re in, they steer them to courses in sports communications. They’re adulated when they’re playing, but when they get out, the people who adulated them won’t hire them."

...I sincerely doubt he'll get even the slightest whiff of a Michigan Head Coaching job very soon.

    Yeah, Tom...

I think it's a little early in Harbaugh's coaching career to start talking Michigan yet...

He just got his first big win on the D-1 level, but there is still a lot of wood to chop until the end of the season...

Jimmy might not have it turned around that much yet...

If he gets Stanford in competition for the P-10 over the next few years he'll start to get the offers though...

    As far as Miles goes...

I'd be surprised if he left for Michigan after this year regardless of the Tigers winning it all or not...

But if LSU doesn't win the whole thing this year...

Expect to start hearing grumbling out of BR for Miles "Lesticles"...

With TE leading the way on here...
