Miles signs extension at LSU

UPDATE:

See udpate below.....

Original Post -- Now completely wrong

ESPN is reporting that Les Miles will be the next head coach at Michigan.

Sources have told ESPN's Kirk Herbstreit that barring any unforeseen circumstances, Michigan will announce early next week it has reached an agreement with LSU coach Les Miles to be its next head football coach.

Herbstreit is also reporting that Miles will make Georgia Tech defensive coordinator and interim head coach Jon Tenuta part of his staff at Michigan.

Miles reportedly told the LSU Tigers football team on Thursday afternoon that -- if he was offered -- he would accept the UM job and he didn't want the team to hear it from anyone else. I think that will turn out to be a smart move on Miles's part, especially since he was criticized for the method of his departure at Oklahoma State.

Miles is not the only Tiger leaving - LSU DC Bo Pelini will be named the new head coach at Nebraska.

With Miles and Pelini gone, what happens next at LSU? While the situation is incredibly fluid right now, there are indications that two prevailing schools of thought are developing within the power structure at LSU.

Reportedly one camp is actively campaigning to bring Nick Saban back to LSU from Alabama, while other top officials are seeking to recruit Steve Spurrier as the next LSU coach. The resulting power struggle is said to involve the university board, president, and on up the ladder.

Would LSU have Saban back? While some LSU officials did not appreciate the manner in which he left, Saban still has a lot of supporters at LSU. While "Slick Nick" has a reputation of pulling up stakes and moving his tent with regularity, he left LSU for an NFL position and most booster feel he had to take that shot in the pros.

Saban was in Baton Rouge and Monroe this week with a police escort doing some recruiting, but LSU officials denied rumors that he was speaking to anyone from the university.

It's hard to confirm much of this chatter about the next LSU coach, but I just want to mention it because there is too much of it out there for it not to have some basis in reality.

Let the "[insert name here] just bought a house in Baton Rouge" talk begin!

UPDATE

In an incredible case of ESPN doesn't always know best, LSU Head Coach Les Miles has signed an extension with the Tigers and will remain the top Tiger in Baton Rouge.

Miles has agreed to a lucrative, multi-year extension with LSU. Miles told his players today, before this afternoon's Southeastern Conference championship game in Atlanta against Tennessee, that he is remaining their head coach.

LSU AD Skip Bertman has confirmed the contract extension and Miles just wrapped a press conference to confirm the deal.

"I am the head coach at LSU. I will be the head coach at LSU," Miles said Saturday. "I have no interest in talking to anybody else."

Wearing a purple tie, standing and gesturing, Miles angrily made his announcement two hours before the No. 5 Tigers played No. 14 Tennessee in the Southeastern Conference championship game.

Miles said an erroneous ESPN report that he was going to Michigan prompted him to speak to his players and the media.

"I've got a championship game to play, and I'm excited about the opportunity of my damn strong football team to play," he said. "It's unfortunate that I had to address my team with that information this morning.

"I represent me in this issue, please ask me after. I'm busy," he said.

ESPN has revised it's original story (linked above) to reflect the 180 turn.

"The truth is he's going to stay at LSU," Bertman said by telephone. "We have an agreement, but we don't have a written, signed document. But we have an agreement so that Les could talk to his team today, which he did."

The official, official LSU site has the Miles "announcement" posted, along with Miles' confirmation that he will be the coach of the Tigers next year.

ON-FIELD PRE-GAME LSU SPORTS RADIO NETWORK INTERVIEW

Q: We're on the floor of the Georgia Dome with LSU head coach Les Miles. Coach, let's get it over with one last time. You are the head football coach at LSU right now. You will be the head football coach at next season. Right or wrong?

Les Miles: "Absolutely. I'm staying at LSU. This is a place I want to be. This is a place my family is very comforatable. This school has everything. It has an opportunity at victory and competing at the highest level. Personally, professionally, socially, we have friends here. I respect the young men that I coach. Anybody that I have signed, when I tell them I am going to be here, I was sincere. I'm the head coach at LSU and I'm going to be the head coach at LSU."

This absolutely reeks of LSU and it's big bag of sweaty money, as I speculated yesterday. There had been reports that the Michigan offer would be in the neighborhood of $2.5 million a year, but yesterday I heard that LSU was ready to offer Miles an extension well above $3 million a year, perhaps as high as $3.5 million.

No contract details have been released at this time.

And here I thought Brian Kelly was going to get the job, well I was wrong. Good for Michigan, and good for Miles, I know he's a Michigan guy.

I don't think LSU will have any problems finding a qualified coach to take over their program.

Kevin: Don't you mean start the 'Tommy Tuberville has just been hired at LSU' talk?

Oh yea, I'm sorry. Put it in the correct format: "I heard that Tommy Tuberville just bought a house in Baton Rouge".

I don't know that I believe the part about Jon Tenuta leaving for Michigan. With GA Tech seemingly in no hurry to find a coach, I'd think that Tenuta might still hang on to the hopes of getting the HC position there. His name is certainly in the hat.

    Saban isn't going anywhere.

Another thing: Wasn't Michigan supposed to be waiting until after LSU's game tonight before sitting down with Miles? How can you have a deal if you haven't even officially talked with him?

What ever happened to respecting the wishes of another team, like waiting until after a game? Keep this up and the NCAA will start charging infractions for it. Illegal contact with coaches; on Michigan; 10-yard penalty; still 2nd down...

Ron: You know, back in the old days, there used to repercussions for breaking gentlemen's agreements. These days--I'm not so sure. But perhaps Miles actually didn't.

But you're right--Miles was having delusions of grandeur as soon as talk about Carr retiring began.

Whaddya wanna bet Miles was just trying to get some leverage for a better salary? What kind of fallout happens if LSU manages to lose tonight?

One thing is for sure. If he really did want to coach for Michigan someday, I doubt it'll ever happen now.

Tom: I doubt that Miles would use Michigan for leverage with LSU. You just don't do that with your Alma Mater. Another school, perhaps. You have to wonder why he wouldn't want to go home, though. Carr didn't exactly run Go Blue into the ground.

Does LSU really want to pay $3M+ to a coach who almost lost 5 games this season, a season where he was expected to run the table? Talk about under-achieving...

This coaching-hype and escalating salaries are starting to remind me of the Dutch Tulip Craze. I think that coaching salaries exceeded their intrinsic value a long time ago. In other words, I believe that once a coach reached a certain dollar amount, that none of his individual talents and abilities would contribute any additional value to the team. The rising salaries were just pure hype-driven speculation, the type that the dot com craze could only dream of emulating.

    For the LSU Tigers.
Is Les Miles that good and worth an extension?
It's not like the program was in shambles when he got there. He lost two games this year and he made some a lot more exciting than they should have been.

If it's not a bigger Johnson thing with Michigan. It may be better off letting him go with your blessings.
There's a lot of great coaches out there that would kill to coach at LSU.

Also, I've discovered what is, hands down, the most depressing part of this football season:

Miami gets blown out in their Orange Bowl finale.

    FIU actually wins in theirs.

So it's FIU that has to pick up Miami's slack and give the O.B. a proper send-off. What a season...

It's great to be a Miami Hurricane - or at least let's hope it will be next year ;D...R.I.P. #26...

I can't believe you can go into a weekend at No 4 in BCS, both 1 and 2 lose and you get shut out. The DAWGS would whip the shit out of Ohio State and everyone knows it. Hell, if they beat Washington tonight put Hawaii in there for all I care, but do not put LSU, OK, USC, VT in there. They were all at least 2 spots below us before today, we didn't lose, and none of their wins today looked that impressive. Give the DAWGS a shot at it. I was a believer in Oklahoma ever since they blew out Miami - granted, that was before I knew how much Miami sucked, but anyway, the Sooners looked like a championship-caliber team from the beginning.

They gave up a couple stupid losses to Colorado and Texas Tech, but this is still a great football team.

They're going to beat Mizzou tonight, and the BCS is going to implode.

Ohio State must be happy that they've fooled the BCS again. I'm confident that if they play Georgia, though, they're going to get blown again.

I do think that's going to be the match-up, because it's hard to take any of the other two loss teams over Georgia, who's clearly the hottest team right now. Kansas could make an argument as a one-loss team, but they didn't win their division either, and played a cupcakey schedule.

You can't have it both ways. I say, BS on the fluke talk. They LOST the games. What--Oklahoma getting beat by Colorado was a fluke, too?

Well, screw it all!! Forget about all the wins and losses, let's just arbitrarily pick who deserves to go to the title game based on FEELINGS...whoa, whoa, whoa...FEELINGS...LOL!!

I definitely think GA could beat USC.
We didn't make out conference game because we lost to TN and so they won in the tiebreaker. Hello?
If Dixon does not get hurt, you don't win your conference no matter how badly you beat everyone after you lost to them. Once you get the L, all you can do is hope for the other team to lose. In your case, Dixon got hurt, Oregon went in the shitter, and you won your conference. Unfortunately for us, TN got hot (and lucky) and won out. All we could do was continue to beat everyone else and hope. That does not take away the fact that UGA would beat anyone they played right now. Of all the 2 loss teams in the top 15, I would only put USC above VT and Arizona St. GO DAWGS!

GA is playing consistent football and LSU isn't. There is nothing in the rules that says you must win a conference championship to be in the NC game. We will all just wait and see.

Stop blasting the Tigers everytime you get near your keyboard and I'll lay off. Did the Tigers dominate the game? NO But did the Tigers win? YES

    Was it ANOTHER ugly win?
    Absolutely

But an ugly win is better than a beautiful loss anyday, anytime, anywhere.

Again, I'll try and end this on a positive note. You went 6-6 with nearly a whole new coaching staff. It's only gonna get better. GL to you next year. Looking forward to seeing the Crimson Tide in Death Valley next year. It ought to be a good one.

    Geauxtigers0107 (#120):

I agree that Georgia is very hot right now--but I don't forsee another blowout this year. After what I've been reading since the Michigan game, I'm certain OSU learned their lesson from last year. I also agree with your "chip on their shoulder" comment. After everything that's happened this year, I see a lot of parity.

Another thing I'd like to add about the "OSU has fooled the BCS" talk. A total of 16--let me repeat that number--16 teams have been ranked above OSU at 2 different points this year. They all LOST. The BCS has been fooled alright, but not by OSU. They were ranked 11th and 7th this year when the slates were clean. Should they have been ranked lower? Maybe, but NONE of this--the 16 teams above them losing, nor the rankings--are OSU's fault.

At the beginning of the season, I would've been happy with an 8-4, maybe 9-3 record and a bowl invite--not even a BCS bowl. It's been a lot better than I expected.

Guess what GA Boy...GA will not have a shot. Why? Because they lost to USC and Tenn, thus not getting a shot at the SEC Championship to play LSU tonight. Guess what else...LSU beat TENN. LSU only lost to KEN and ARK in 3 overtimes. Two teams that were some of the best in the nation. Why deprive LSU at a NC shot? Cause you're a hater? That's just not an acceptable reason, sorry. While you are pondering why LSU should not get a shot w/ their two losses (besides the fact you're a hater) answer me who has KU played this year besides Misourri, the one good team they played, and the one game they lost. Apparently everyone esle in the country thought so to going into this week since we were ranked above you. Now all of a sudden, we can't be ranked ahead of you. Are the DAWGS the conference champions, no? Are they the best team in the SEC right now? Without a doubt they are.
You lost your last regular season game to Arkansas. We have won 6 games in a row against some teams that you played (1 of which you lost to). Yeah, you are the SEC champs, congrats. But better than GA at this point in the season. Not a chance. You need to call KY and Vandy's field goals kickers and thank them missing the game winners against TN and keeping us out of the game today.

Don't worry about it GA Boy. Everytime anyone makes a statement about LSU that isn't a glowing review, we are accused of being a hater. I've had the word hater tossed at me so many times that I just ignore it now.

This is LSU fans way of creating a smoke screen so that people won't see how crazy Less has his team playing.

LSU has already been at the top twice this year and couldn't hold on. Don't know how many chances they think they deserve. If not GA then USC. I'm a little tired of seeing LSU fold like a bed sheet when the pressure is on.
