Spartans get new uniforms

Along with their new coach, the Michigan State football team will be getting new uniforms this season. The new Nike-designed unis will be paired with a slightly modified helmet design, a call back to previous MSU uniforms.

The new uniforms have keep the "MICHIGAN STATE" block lettering across the front, with a different block font to match the look of other MSU athletic teams. The players names will also appear on the back of the uniforms.

Minor changes also have been made on the headgear. The Spartan helmet logo remains affixed to each side of the headgear. A single white stripe has been added down the center of the helmet. In addition, 1 1/2-inch jersey numbers have been added to the back of the headgear. Double-digit numbers are divided by the center stripe.

The modified helmet design will be familiar to Spartan fans, as it is very similar to past Michigan State helmet designs (a la '78-82 helmet and '95-'00 helmet).

The Spartans will wear green jerseys over white pants for home games and white jerseys over white pants for away games.

"This is a clean, classic uniform design," MSU athletic equipment coordinator Bob Knickerbocker said. "The new uniform really embraces Michigan State's football heritage. Several old elements have been added to the uniform and those are things that our ex-players and alumni can relate to. They can say, `hey, that's how the jersey and helmet looked when I played there or that's how the uniforms looked when I went to school there.'"

    The movie '300' inspired many.

Thank goodness Nike wasn't one of them...

With the exception of "Michigan State" and the Nike symbol on the jersey's and the Spartan on the helmets, these uniforms look exactly like my high school uniforms, colors and all. Now, there's a scary thought.

i wish Nike would apply the same minimalist concepts to Oregon Duck football gear...i like the clean, classic look...of course, i've always liked the Spartans better than the Wolverines anyway.

I hope that they also received new hearts. They left their old ones on the field against Notre Dame.

It was only a matter of time that the Oregon Unie/Nike-effect began to spread.

New uni's are'nt going to help them play better.

If I could say one thing to coach Dantonio, I would tell him to give himself short-term memory loss, because they do not have the talent of Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State, Wisconsin, Iowa, or even Minnesota so they must understand that losses are going to come, but they are going to have to determine to play better after every loss.

Good Luck state.......your going to need some.

The changes are so subtle, it hardly constitutes a "change." That's a good thing.

    My top 10 unis:

    1. Gators--(Blue tops, white pants)
    2. Notre Dame--(navy blue tops (NOT green), old gold pants)
    3. Penn State (white jrz's and pants)
    4. LSU--(white jerz's, yeller pants)
    5. Alabama--(Crimson jerz's, white pants)
    6. Auburn--(Navy blue jerz's, white pants)
    7. Miami--(white jerz's, orange pants)
    8. Georgia--(red jerz's, grey pants)
    9. Minnesota--(maroon jerz's, gold pants);
    10. OSU--(white jerz's, grey pants)
    _________________________________________________
    Honorable mention:

    Texas--away (white tops & pants)
FSU--home (garnet tops, old gold pants)
    Arkansas (cardinal tops, white pants)
Iowa--(black tops, gold pants; Stealer's knock-off, but it works).
    Clemson--(orange tops and pants)
    Michigan--(blue tops, gold pants)
    USC--home (similar 2 Minnesota's; matter of pref.)
    _________________________________________________

    Worst:

    UNC--home or away
    Georgia Tech/Vandy--old gold tops
    Notre Dame--Green jerz's
    UCLA--powder blue tops

Any team (including the Gators) that used that those different color'd shoulder deals in '05--those were just wrong.

    My $.02.

    GO GATORS!!

    Corrections:

    LSU: gold pants, not yeller (I was messing around, forgot to edit b4 posting);

Michigan: Maize, not gold pants (cerebral flatulance; my bad).

    Damn, when's football season start?

TampaGator didn't mention Oregon in his worst list (see post #13)...could it be that the diamond plated uniforms are starting to grow on people? Ya, right! Oregon is better off not having "traditional" uniforms...because if you ever saw their throw-back uniforms you'd thank your lucky stars that Oregon went the way of innovation.

    Chris M. (#16):

Glad for the props for the Miami jerseys, but I am adamant that the 'Canes need to return to that awesome design they used from 2000-2003.

After two or three beers, I will swear to anyone that they started going downhill BECAUSE they switched to the twill design when they joined the ACC in 2004.

Those 'batwing' uniforms were awesome. Even Dorsey with his Cross-Country build looked like Superman taking the field.

The new twill unis are still pretty decent looking, but I promise you that if they changed back, Miami would only lose one game every two years. Period.

    Geez I need a life.

Eh...it's the offseason, this is what we have to hark on until August...

Thanks to Kev for finding something for us to chew on :-)

Hey, Kevin...I'm surprised there isn't a Blog on the OS Beavers new uniforms! We football fans here in Oregon expect the most horrid array of colors to ever take the field during the '07 Civil War. The Beavers will bust out of the tunnel wearing their orange unis and the Ducks will bust out of the tunnel wearing their yellow unis and their neon yellow helmets...and ever one will need to wear sunglasses just to watch the game!

One more comment. I'd like the uniforms even better if they would wear black shoes at Home, or for that matter, on the road, too.
