Minny, Hawaii, and GT roll out new uniforms
'Tis the season for uniform changes and -- as usual -- college football's fashion police here at Fanblogs have the recaps.
As previously reported, the Utah Utes will have a new uniform design this fall and the Miami Hurricanes will wear a limited-edition black jersey for one game.
Minny coach Tim Brewer is ready to try just about anything to improve the Gophers lot in life, so Minnesota will be wearing new uniforms this fall.
According to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, the new uniforms will implement the school's new uniform shade of maroon with "MINNESOTA" across the chest of the Nike design. The Gophers will also return to white pants for the first time since the late 1960's.
The No. 1 home uniform will be maroon jerseys with gold pants; the No. 1 road combination will be white jerseys with gold pants. Brewster and several players picked the white-on-white combination as their personal favorite."This is the look that has absolutely wowed all our kids and recruits," Brewster said.
In other words, you can pretty much count on maroon/gold, maroon/white, or maroon/maroon combinations at home, while road games may feature white/gold, white/maroon, or white/white, but the Gophers will also have an "alternate" gold/gold uniform that may be used for specially designated games.
Personally, I really love the new Minnesota uniforms. I really appreciate schools being true to some of the more classic designs and I think the maroon looks *a lot* better now than in did. Is that going to stop Wisconsin from plowing through Minny? No, but the Gophers will look good trying to catch up.
Elsewhere, the Hawaii uniforms that we reported on a few months back have finally been unveiled and Hawaii blog Warriors will Throw has actually pics, video and his commentary.
Awww yeah. I'm liking the unis a lot more after seeing the videos. Putting the tapa bands back on would make them 20x more awesome, woot woot!
The Hawaii uniforms are one of those exceptions to the rule about great uniform designs, because they are anything but "classic", but still manage to look good. Under Armour's new design is a DEFINITE improvement for the Warriors road uniform (which we'll first see in their televised game at Florida). I agree with Tombo Ahi's commentary that Hawaii needs to play up the tapa element with the design, because that's a great homage to the history of the program and the island.
Word out of Atlanta is that Georgia Tech is dropping the traditional gold home jersey under new head coach Paul Johnson. In homage to the Yellow Jacket teams of old, Tech will wear white jerseys at home this season over gold pants, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Finally, I know *some* of the more vocal Fanblogs posters might think that uniform changes don't matter, but... they do.
The brave Senator Blutarsky has the deets on a recruit that chose to attend Oregon over Florida State... because of the uniforms.
...The recruiting gossip last winter was he was almost certainly headed to Florida State, but the seeds of his cross-country sojourn were initially sown on a faithful October afternoon when he and some buddies watched Oregon nip USC on television.Said Blount, "Those uniforms are tight."
"Would you go there?" a buddy asked.
"I'd go there."
And the rest - as they say - is history.
More shocking... choosing a school based on uniforms or choosing Oregon based on uniforms??

Kevin, any recruit who would choose Oregon over FSU on the basis of uniforms doesn't deserve to wear the garnet and gold. In fact, a recruit selecting schools on the basis of uniforms should probably not graduate high school.
That being said, I will praise Oregon for the "steel grid" look on the shoulders of their unis - those are tough!
Seems like Paul Johnson is dedicated to changing EVERYTHING at GT, not just the uniforms. With the exception of myself, all this change seems to be driving up expectations amongst all the Bug fans, so if he doesn't produce results quickly, I'm predicting a hasty departure for PJ. Personally, I remain skeptically optimistic at this point. After Chan Gailey, we have plenty of room for improvement.

I like Notre Dame's dark green with gold pants....last years against USC were pathetic. As for Minnesota i really like the white/white look. They were long overdue for a change.
Penn State has the most boring uni's i have ever seen.
Does anyone remember those Florida uniforms a few years ago? They were all blue with one shoulder orange....good thing those are gone.

I have to agree; MN's white-on-white looks the best. I haven't been able to get behind OR's uniforms at all. These are supposed to be Mighty Ducks. Where are the feathers, for cry'n out loud? And Hawaii, I don't understand their colors in the least. What ever happened to blaze reds, stunning oranges, vibrant yellows, bolt-cutter-beaked Macaws, and Palm Trees. Their uniforms should scream TGIF! Not that it will matter when they visit Gainesville in the fall. Even the Hakka won't get it done there.
I can only hope WVU does more with the Royal Blue in their uniform, than with the "Gold". Last year during a couple of games they came out in this color that reminded me of only one thing: French's Mustard. They have to have something better than that.

Lennie: The trend is for teams to nick-name their stadium after something associated with the mascot. You're right, a good nick-name for GA Tech's Grant Field would be The Hive or something like that, perhaps with a corporate sponsorship by Raid Flying Insect Spray...
In the beginning, about 48 teams nick-named their stadium Death Valley, in apparent stark contrast to the fact that it was no where in an arid region or have an abundance of sand. Thankfully, only a few have endured, as cheesy a name as it is...
The first team to really get creative was Florida, when Spurrier christened Florida Field The Swamp, which was cool because that's where Gators hang out when they're not crawling into your subdivision lake and eating your dogs and small children.
Tommy Tuberville decided to start calling Auburn's stadium The Jungle a few years ago, not because that's where Tigers live, but because of that Guns and Roses song by the same name... I thought it was a little cheesy because approximately 54 college football teams are named Tigers and we get back into that whole Death Valley repitition thing again...
So as a perfect hijack for this thread, perhaps we can come up with appropriate nicknames for various stadiums across the country that relate to the name of the team:
For example:
Purdue Boilermakers: The Burn Unit...
Georgia and Miss State Bulldogs: The Pound or The Kennel (okay, a child could come up with those)
Texas Longhorns: The Corral
Colorado Buffalos: Tah-tanka! (okay, I know that means buffalo, but I just like using that word whenever I get a chance, you know, as a pop-culture reference, like the kind you see in` Family Guy...)
Oklahoma Sooners: The Dust Bowl (or is that what you guys call your recent post-season attempts?) :-)
Okay, you guys come up with some...

Hate to see Georgia Tech go back to the white jerseys for home games. I liked the gold jerseys with numbers better.
Clemson Joe(Comment #1)...LSU wears white only at home for SEC opponents OR if the visiting non-conference teams okay it. Mississippi State has worn white TWICE for SEC "home" openers: South Carolina & LSU. Florida did it twice under Steve Spurrier. Most teams wear them in throwback mode or special fund raisers...Tulane and Virginia Tech!
War Eagle Atlanta(Comment #10)...it would be great for teams to get back to NICK NAMING their staduims BUT $'s will win out every time!

War Eagle Atlanta, Comment #12, the Oklahoma Sooners football Stadium is officially called: The Gaylord Family Memorial Stadium. I am sure the jokes will be coming in soon. In college sports...donors who donate the most get to put their name put on the stadiums, arenas, and fields! Possible nick names? Home on the Range? Despite their recent post season record they have one of the best home winning percentages overall!

A lot of these are just too fat friggen funny, especially AR’s, Hog Trough, & Notre Dame’s, Burger King. Am I the only one who caught WarEagle’s reference to Pat Summit, or wasn’t that intentional? (Waaaa, Fan-O-The-Game stole my Still.)
Here are a few poor excuses I could come up with
TX – The Slaughter House
OK – The Chuck Wagon
VA Tech – The Turkey Farm (Nah, too obvious)
VA Tech – The Brood Shack (Nah, too dark)
VA Tech – The Horn-O-Plenty
Air Force – The SAC Base (Alternative, The Hanger)
Navy – The Shipyard (Nah, too obvious)
Navy – The Dry-Dock
Army – The Mine Field (Alternative, The Artillery Range)
Tulane – The “Dude” Ranch (Oh, who cares? Surf’s Up!!!)This one’s for you, Kev.
FSU – The Wigwam
A couple of improvements
Penn St – The St Penn
Notre Dame – McDonald’s (We are talking about the Irish, after all.)Tomcat said:

Nothing like a good hijacking of a uniform thread to lift Kevin's spirits up!
The original intent was to base the nickname of the stadium on something to something associated with the teams' names. For example, you couldn't nickname Penn State's stadium The Old Folks Home because that's based on JoPa rather than Nittany Lions. So as funny as Burger King is for Notre Dame, it has nothing to do with the Irish, so it doesn't count. Otherwise, we might suggest The Cardiac Unit for Kansas and Mangino...
Speaking of which, you know there's no justice in the world when cardiovascular problems plague a young guy like Kevin while Mangino lives...
Zac with some very creative ones--I like The Shipyard and The Wigwam... BTW: The summit is the top of a mountain, i.e. Rocky Top. The Pat Summit is just a coinkydink.

My apologies to all for my participation in the hijacking of this thread. If it makes a difference now..., I don't care for any of the uniform combinations. Maybe if they played in all gold, but I still doubt it would look very good. The colors are okay, but the uniform style doesn't work for me.
Now then, I'm sorry that my stadium nicknames didn't follow the format set forth by WEA. Although, my first post wasn't that far off.
Notre Dame - "Potato Famine Field"

OU Ron, Comment #27, & Bevo Boy, Comment #28, he was visiting someone in the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital. I am feeling sick myself and of course he made a comment about about me being a Sooners' fan and I told him forget football stay your four years and get that education. He informed me he had 20 hours left! I also applauded him for staying level-headed of course as people were walking up to him sayin' "Hook 'em Horns" and he sure did not look like he was thinkin' of football at the time. I shared the story to let y'all know that I am a OFFICIAL LONGHORNS DISLIKER instead of HATER now...only when they are on the field/arena of play! How would I have looked has a person let along a Sooners fan yelling non-sense at him while he is going through a difficult moment in his life. He did not come across conceited or arrogant so I am going to judge all Longhorns players/fans individually instead of as a group right here, right now! As my feeling of Cult McCoy changed? Yes! He is now Colt McCoy! For William Mack Brown? Yes! He still is William "Whack" Brown to me! CRIMSON & CREAM TRUE! Take care, MAN!

Hope you had a nice day man, but I have to ask about post #41. I agree that the mascots emblem looks better than some letters.
Texas Longhorns-Have mascots image on helment
Oklahoma Sooners have letters on helment
Maybe your a closet UT fan, living in Austin ?
Na man just messin with ya a little bit.
BTW I used to like the Rice Helments with the Wings and then the Owl, but I have to admit that that R looks purty cool on the side.

Big 11: Iowa
Big 12: Kansas State. So I like purple & silver!
Big East: Louisville. That Cardinal look mad!
SEC: Arkansas. Alright! I love bacon...pig's feets...chitterlings!
ACC: Florida State no doubt!Texas uniforms are plain, plain! Throw on a burnt facemask if ya not gone go to a burnt orange helmet! Put on some burnt orange pants with those white jerseys. Co-ordinate...you need to co-ordinate! Co-ordinate!

Lennie, by all means, cheer for who ever you want, why ever you want. I also happen to like Sylvester Croom (See Post 130, paragraph 10, on the Open Thread.). But, I just happen to like him because I think he’s a good coach and a decent human being. It’s got nothing to do with his color or race. Just FYI.
WVU used to have the shape of the state of WV on their helmets. Since it looked to (then) new HC, Don Nehlan, more like the state of confusion, he felt a modernized WV would work better. They’ve been using it ever since. So, it's just a matter of a team finding its identity. Once MN finds its identity, they’ll run with it.

I don’t know, Lennie. Considering some hot shot investigative reporter revealed this more than telling relationship between GEICO and ole J. C., I would think putting him on the Mountaineer’s helmet would be scandalous. I think you’d be better off putting Rodgers & Hammerstein on your Sooners’ helmets.
