Ole Miss admits inquiring on Tulane players
Answering allegations that his coaching staff may have tampered with the Tulane football team, Mississippi AD Pete Boone admitted that one of his coaches has contacted Tulane about players transferring after this season.
The announcement came almost two weeks after the allegations were made by Tulane, calling the school in question "lower than dirt".
Boone said he encouraged the contact by first-year Ole Miss coach Ed Orgeron and his staff, according to Sunday's Jackson (Miss.) Clarion-Ledger. But on Monday, Boone said the contact was made because of miscommunication."I didn't know Ed or one of his assistants was going to call Tulane," Boone said. "That's not what I asked him to do."
...
Boone said he only wanted Orgeron to get information about Tulane's players in case something happened with the Green Wave's program. Boone said they had heard rumors that Tulane's football program was going to be forced to disband because of financial problems brought on by Katrina.
"I didn't want (Orgeron) to get caught trying to find out information about the players (at the last minute) if this in fact happened," Boone said. "I just said, 'Let's do our homework.' Ed probably thought it was fine for him or one of his assistants to contact one of (Tulane's) coaches."
According to the initial reports, Ole Miss will probably not be subject to NCAA or SEC sanctions. Mississippi says they only talked to Tulane coaches and back channel contacts, not directly to the players. Since Tulane isn't commenting, it's not clear if the Rebels' coaches actually ever spoke to a player, or just back channels as they claim.

Orgeron is making Ole Miss a joke (more so than ever before). The guy jumps around like a damn monkey and looks like one dressed in his little ties and short sleeve shirts. He obviousley has no people skills, as shown by Mazzone walking out last wednesday. His players are quitting (I heard Lane is leaving along with 8 other recruits from last year) and he isn't winning. The Rebels looked so uninspired Saturday night. It was pitful. I know the whole argument "give him time", but the more time we give this guy the more he is going to hurt the program. The one thing Ole Miss has managed to salvage the past few years is class. Cutcliffe had it. Orgeron does not.

Sounds like the AD is to avoid blame, putting it on his subordinates. He only admitted this much because everyone knew it was Ole Miss that Tulane was talking about last week. Knowing the atmosphere, how could he not tell his staff not to contact Tulane about the possibility of transferring players. Who gave him those crazy rumors anyway. He is a top official, how can he make decisions on hearsay?

Medical schools and law schools took in Tulane students because there were no place for them to go. Tulane still has a football (not a good one) and for Ole Miss to try to pry players away during the football season after what Tulane just went through with Katrina is distasteful.

Not surprising that Pete Boone is such a bozo; he fired David Cutcliffe after OM had 5 winning seasons in 6 years, the best in about 40 years for them. He hired Ed Orgeron, who bragged he'd build a "fence around Memphis" for recruiting, but after this season, he'd be better off trying to build a fence around Oxford. The only time these guys get to come to the United States is when they cross the state line into Tennessee.
Thanks, Pete. Welcome back to UT, Coach Cut!

Why did y'all hire Orgeron in the first place? The guy is a joke. He's division 2 caliber maybe. I just don't understand how the ole miss program could be so blind as to hire a non=professional like this guy. He looks like he belongs in a high school gym class. What about those bumper stickers with "O- the Coach". Are you proud of those now? Maybe Orgeron and Croom can get the Tulane players and start their own little team called the Mississippi Misfits.

Wurmo, don't lump Croom in with MORgerON. They have completely different styles when it comes to communicating with thier players. MORgerON gets in thier face and screams, like he did @ the LSU and OM game on ESPN (national t.v.).Croom at least tries to teach his guys.
