Ole Miss puts 20 on probation for hotel thefts
Ole Miss has suspended 20 players "indefinitely" for taking items from a hotel.
A news release said the players have paid for the items, which included radios and pillows. Ole Miss coach Ed Orgeron said in the release that the players will be on probation indefinitely.Officials said the items stolen cost between $15 and $40.
"Any actions similar to this will result in more severe penalties which may include dismissal from the team," Orgeron said in the release.
The action comes a day after the Rebels lost 41-24 to No. 1 LSU in Oxford. It appears the players will be allowed to play Friday at Mississippi State in the final game of the season.
The Ole Miss compliance department said that neither the team nor the players will be subject to NCAA sanctions, since the players have repaid the hotel for the items.
It's interesting that the university has yet to detail WHEN the thefts took place, which players were involved, when the staff knew and when restitutions were made. But -- of course -- no one is expected to miss the Egg Bowl game against Mississippi State.

Hotty Toddy, T-Mac thinks he has a right to speak on this one.
In life people have choices.
There are right choices and there are wrong choices.
Stealing is wrong.
Period. End of story.
Any and every player involved in this should not be allowed to play in the EBowl.
T-Mac speaks his mind.
T-Mac has to check on the chili.

Excuse me, yes its Friday... not Thursday...traditionally its supposed to be on Thanksgiving. I'm sure that "disproves" my fanhood. lol
Hey Cowbell, just remember... last year, 20-17. And remember who leads the series.
T-Mac, yeah you're right bro, that shouldn't be tolerated. He recruits alot of thugs. Good talented players, but half of them don't ever play because they can't achieve the academic requirements or because of stupid stuff like this.

Hotty, Believe T-Mac.
T-Mac loves Ole Miss more than anybody, but Coach O should tighten the reigns and make a statement.
The only reason they paid back the money is cause they got caught!
T-Mac can maybe see a tiny bar of soap or something, but this was stealing plain & simple.

Absolutely ridiculous, shameful behavior. Not a good weekend for Ole Miss fans.
I think it reflects more on the boneheaded players than the coaching, but we've got one more year to see what Orgeron's about. I don't really care what other schools' fans think about him, but the kool-aid has started to sour for many Ole Miss fans. I think next year will be the true test with his own players, full scholarships for the first time in his tenure, and maybe even a real quarterback.
What's tiresome is all the "y'all shouldn't have fired Cutcliffe" talk. Even the majority of the O haters think canning Cutcliffe was the right thing to do at the time, though they may disagree with the choice of his successor. Those who are more than passingly familiar with the program are aware of the destitute state it was in after Cutcliffe's last year. It's also damning that Cut's only job offer after Ole Miss was to be a qb coach, until his revival as OC at Tennessee.

Andrew #8,
I am speachless to hear a rebel fan say firing Cutcliffe was the right thing to do! As many Ole Miss fans as I know and talk to, you are the ONLY one that I have EVER heard say that was the right decision, and I'm beginning to wonder if you even watch football at all.
As for your comment about his only job after leaving was a qb coach doesn't mean a damn thing.
Toddy, I think you need to inform a fellow rebel fan on whats going on, cause he doesn't sound too much like he knows what hes talking about.

"Since the student-athletes have made restitution, there are no NCAA rules violations."
Huh? Once you knock over your local 7-11 the damage is already done. Even if you go back and return the money, don't the police still arrest you?
I once survived a year and a half in Jackson, MS. People who have to sleep on corn husk mattresses feel like they have arrived when they get a real pillow. Shades of the Jeffersons and "Movin' on up"!

Update - I revised the headline title, as I misunderstood the nature of the "punishment". Maybe it was a brain freeze, or maybe I just presumed twenty players who stole items would be suspended. (Heck, even FSU suspends people!)
I guess I gave Orgeron too much credit.

I'm thinking that the reason the NCAA has said there would be no sanctions AND why there is no mention of the police anywhere in the article is a simple one...
The majority of hotel and motel chains have gone to programs where patrons can take just about anything in the room and the hotel/motel will just tack on charges for the items taken such as the pillows and clocks in question...
This is a trend that has always been a part of higher end hotels (the Kessler chain and independent businesses like the Waldorf) but has just recently started to become common practice in more chain oriented overnighters such as the Hampton Inns and the rest of the Hilton chain.
More than likely waht happened was the players took the items in question and the place where the team stays in Tupelo simply added the missing items to the school's bill...
Hence, no theft charges from law enforcement...
Then the school was forced to make the players pay for the items in order to avoid any type of inappropriate benefits actions by the NCAA...

Give me a break Ole Miss. When you SUSPEND someone, they shouldn't be allowed to play the next game, regardless of who you are playing. That's the definition of suspended. They should just call this what it really is, a slap on the wrist and nothing more.

None of these players were suspended as K-Hue noted in post #11...
They have been put on probation...
I suspect they were not suspended for the reasons I listed in post #13...
Speculation on my part but I would lay a twenty spot on that's the reason why...

There are not too many fans who are still on board with Coach O-7. It does not look good for our school to fire a coach after three years, but he has got to get some kind of a grip on the program and these thugs he is bringing in. We may have top 25 recruiting classes, but we are a joke on the field. The program will start losing money and then he'll be gone.
P.S.-Its not like Croom has a great group of kids at State. Until "pillow-gate" you guys were leading the SEC in player suspensions.

ALT-ien, lol...
Good luck Ole Miss, you'll probably need it, what with the man taking away your clock radios...
EARLY UPSET SPECIAL: Miami 24, Boston College 17... You'll see, I'm not crazy!

ColReb #21,
My exact quote in the very first post was..."Yeah we had a few 3-9 seasons, but atleast Croom showed that he had control of his team and that he was putting the program in the right direction." Now since State was leading the NCAA in player suspensions...wouldn't that go under, "putting the program in the right direction".
P.S. At least we actually DISCIPLINE our players when they do something wrong.

For all yall Ole Miss fans out there, you need to quit kidding yourselves, Orgeron is no where near the coach yall think he is...Yeah we had a few 3-9 seasons, but atleast Croom showed that he had control of his team and that he was putting the program in the right direction. But I guess it will just take another 3-9 or 4-8 season and a few more arrests for yall to wake up and see that he has no business coaching in the SEC.
Firing Cutcliff was probably the dumbest move that yall have ever made, PERIOD. Hope yall are happy with yalls coaching decision. I know we are!
