Croom gets contract extension at Miss State

Hot on the heels of a victory over rival Ole Miss in the Egg Bowl, Mississippi State football coach Sylvester Croom has been rewarded with a two-year contract extension. Croom has been promised at least a one year extension for every year that the MSU team is on NCAA sanctions. If the Bulldogs honor that arrangement, Croom would be at Mississippi State at least through 2011.

"This contract extension acknowledges the progress the Mississippi State football program has made under the leadership of head football coach Sylvester Croom," Athletic Director Larry Templeton said. "It also demonstrates the confidence we have that coach Croom will continue to build this program into the future."

Wow. I don't know that I've ever heard of someone being rewarded for the kind of team he's put on the field the last two seasons.

I guess all you have to do is beat Mississippi to be a hero at State.

This is the same guy that has lost to Maine, Vanderbilt, Alabama-Birmingham, Houston, Kentucky, is 6-16 in his first two seasons, and is 3-13 in Southeast Conference play and gets a contract extention? Maybe if I fall short of sales at my job I can get a raise.

I for one am glad to see a school give a coach more of an opportunity to prove himself. With all of the "one losing year - fire the coach" mentalities out there, it appears that Croom will get 4-5 years of a chance to make something happen, which is reasonable....too many strings are being cut too early these days...

There are obvious reasons why State has to give Croom more time. To cut ties after 2 or 3 years would not fly, especially since the guys at ESPN get a @^$#-on when talking about him and if he were to be fired the state of Mississippi would be made to look like a klan rally. He hasn't recruited well in state or out of state. The longer he stays the better, it means that Ole Miss will have an easier time coming back.

I think what is important to note here is that "not winning" wasn't the only reason the previous coach was fired. There were more problems at State than just poor performance on the field. Eventually Croom will be expected to win, but to expect him to within the sanction period with what Jackie Sherrill left there would be too much to ask of anybody.

And that's the deal K-hat. I don't know what you sell, but what kind of raise job-security guarantee would it take to take over a salesman job for, say "Eaux d' Skunk" perfume? Or "Guaranteed to Taste Like Cow Droppings" breakfast cereal?

Croom didn't earn the extension by winning football games, he did so by "taking out the trash", so to speak. The winning will come later if he's done it right, and if it doesn't, then they'll be looking for a new coach.

But guaranteed if that happens the new coach won't inherit the mess Croom did.

Actually the contract extensions were guaranteed because of the NCAA sanctions. W/L records were not an issue.

Typical UM bullcrap ColReb. You'll lie when the truth would have made you look much better. Croom cleaned up on in-state athletics last year. Not just my opinion but all the TV stations and newspapers agreed. As for Ole Miss, god is all that's left to help your football team. UH "O" is a mental case and as long as he's your head coach, well get ready for the cellar. Wait, you're already there after one season of him.

Sylvester Croom sucks as a head coach. For the past 2 seasons, he has not used good judgement or make good recruits. He dismisses or suspends the best players on the team. And that is good coaching? If all yiu have to do is evrything he does, then anybody could be a head coach.

He dismissed or suspended some the best players on the team because they were discipline cases. I, as a fellow alumn, was ashamed to watch our team play during the "Jackie"era, not because they did not win, but because of thier lack of respect and class toward opposing players and thier coaches as well. Those players that chose to stay and clean up thier act were allowed to stay and many were productive. I appreciate the job Coach Croom is doing and a change was definitely due. As for the University of Mississippi faithful, they better keep an eye on Coach MORgerON or they will have to hire someone to clean up his mess also.

No one else would get the pampering Croom does. I would also like to remind you that the so called "Jackie" problems are still with Croom only they are his recuits and he is taking a different stand with them, not "Mr. Discipline". So far he has seen more of his recruits in jail than games won. The problems in Columbus and in Starkville have led to convictions but no game suspensions.

State will come in about 3-9 this year, and there still won't be any talk of firing him. You hired him, you are stuck with him. The good news for you guys is that Ole Miss seems to not have to recruit only in state now. St. and Southern should have a good time fighting over the scraps. (And its a good thing you don't have to play Maine again, huh?)
