MAC officials make mistake at the Poinsettia Bowl

After Utah tied Boston College for the longest consecutive streak of bowl victories, the officiating crew issued a statement admitting a blown call in the game, even after it had been reviewed.

The play came on a Brian Johnson third-down pass to Jereme Brooks, where the Utah wide-out dove for the end zone and tried to push the ball past the sideline pylon at the goal line.

The ball appeared to leave his hand and hit the pylon, with the officials ruling the play wasn't a touchdown and that Utah retained possession for a fourth-down try from inside the 1-yard line.

In their written statement, the crew cited NCAA Football Rule Section F-1, Rule 8, Section 6, Article 1, Item 1, explaining "the ball was fumbled forward, hit the pylon. The pylon is out of bounds, also in the end zone. The mistake was — it should have been ruled a touchback."

Lou Holtz and Mark May had it right in the press box, how do the refs in the replay booth get it wrong? I am a Utah fan, it should have been a touchback.

The results of the mistake was that Navy stopped Utah at the goal line the next play, giving them the ball at the goal line instead of the 20 they should have. They got eight yards and went for it on fourth down. This was the real mistake that cost Navy. Utah got the ball back at the ten and went in for the easy touchdown.

The Navy coach said he would have ran the same three plays from the 1 as from the 20. Option, option, option. Maybe if he had got to the 28 he would have punted, but at your own 8 you got for it?

I'll take the win and the 32 Bowl mania points.

That's a start. Now if we can just get that REF in the Miami/Ohio State title game to admit that blown pass interference call.

Then, let's investigate his bank records before & after the game. Hmm............;o)

    I MISSED IT! FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA…ahem…ck!!!

One down, 32 to go. How many more thtupid calls do you think these guys will make before somebody puts an end to that union. I mean, come-on, folks. With today's technology, and the ability to review, no less, there's no longer any excuse for this incompetence.

Wow. You need to review the rules if you think the refs "blew" the pass interference call in the Cryami/OSU Title game.

It was--without question--obviously pass interference during real time and in the replay; no matter how many times you repeat the lie, it won't change the facts. Give it up. It was 5 years ago. Crying about it now looks bad on you. Just like it does Ole Miss fans when they complain about the replay call that didn't go their way earlier this year.

I couldn't agree MORE. They screw up just as much WITH replay as they do WITHOUT. OK, that's an exaggeration, but it seems as though they get it wrong way too much.

Tom with all do respect the O'le Miss, missed call didn't cost them a 6th National Championship. I'm sure you'd be less passive about it if it was a team that your an alumni or a die hard fan of. It's easy to say "ohh get over it" when its not your team.

    c-dogg & kershawdw,

Still crying about the 2002 National Championship game?

What about the “no call pass interference” when Gamble got mugged trying to catch a pass on Ohio States last drive, prior to the overtime?

    http://buckeyefansonly.com/notcalled.html

OSU should have been able to run the clock out.

    End of game period!

Also, according to these articles, the right call was made.

    http://cbs.sportsline.com/collegefootball/story/6483719

    http://sports.espn.go.com/chat/sportsnation/story?page=ESPN100_15

To save you sometime, here is a quote; “Big 12 commissioner Kevin Weiberg said game films had been reviewed and that, in fact, Porter had made the right call.”

Read them, weep and get over it!

GO SUN BELT! UNDEFEATED BOWL SEASON!!

No really how about 7 years with a team and already a Bowl win? And they will have a stadium in two years.

    Buckeye 4 Ever (#8):

Okay...worms got out of the can.

I won't take anything away from the '02 Buckeyes. They hung in with a team that was far better, played the way champions are supposed to play, and got it done with poise, relentless defense, and a mountain of heart. They simply wanted that crown, and went out and WON it.

They deserved the win just for being able to do that against a Dorsey-led Hurricane team.

But that was a bad call. And that's why we're still irritated. All the Buckeye blogs and Big 12 commissioners in the world won't change that.

There was even a "You Can't Blame..." episode on ESPN about it. All this would not be made over a call that wasn't at least very questionable.

As far as making 'Cane fans look bad though, whiners wouldn't take steps to get a home-and-home with Ohio State as soon as possible following a heartbreaking loss. Miami did.

All that being said, all Buckeye fans should know that I will be screaming at my TV in support of your team during the title game. Yall have a good team, a great coach, and I utterly despise LSU.

    Rant concluded... :-)

@ Buckeye 4 Ever, hey bud I have been over it for a long time now. I was just stating a fact. For every article you post I can find an article that disputes it, for every "expert" you find to say one way I could find another so your articles aren't impressive =)

First, I agree with Ben that the ball should've been spotted at the 20 in the Utah-Navy game.

"They hung in with a team that was far better..."

The play on the field and the final score doesn't reflect that.

"But that was a bad call."

Wrong. It was the right call. I'd say the same thing if the teams were reversed. Facts are facts. I don't need "experts" (MSM types) to agree with me. It was--and still is--obvious he hit Gamble before the ball got there. It's plain to see in the photos of the play. To believe otherwise is to be wrapped up in an alternate reality. And all the legions of dreamers who claim otherwise won't change it. Sorry if you don't like it, but it's true.

I think it was 55+ times the announcers used the word "speed" to describe Miami during that telecast. Same thing in the USC-Texas game to describe USC. I can't wait for the telecast this year. Every other word will be "speed".

"LSU and the SEC sure has a lot of speed. (Repeat that about 25 times...individually). Here's speed the speed kickoff speed LSU speed receives speed the speed ball speed and speed runs speed down speed the speed sideline speed and speed is speed taken speed down speed at speed the speed 25 speed yard speed line. We'll speed be speed back speed after speed this speed timeout speed."

"Tom, you ready for a repeat of last year? lol"

Different teams, different matchups. We'll see how it all plays out.

A sincere Merry Christmas to everybody. (:-D)

    Please take the compliment. :-)

    >>Wrong. It was the right call.

Tom, this is College Football. All facts are subjective. :-)

I will say that the Big Ten does have plenty enough speed to compete with the SEC. Top-to-bottom, the SEC is still the best conference in the country (I'm an ACC guy for the record).

However, yeah, the 'speed' mindset really seems to be thrown around in Big Ten-SEC matchups. Somehow, the Big Ten "strength" vs. Pac-10 "speed" always evened out, yet the SEC always has the advantage in the commentator's minds.

And I second the sincere Merry Christmas to all :-)

C-Dogg, Regan, Tom: I work with a number of OSU Buckeyes; 2 in my department alone. While they're not "rabid" fans, they've had their things to say about OSU from time to time.

That having been said, in 2002 my money was on Miami. I didn't think OSU should have been there because Cincinnati should have beaten them that year, in my opinion. But, OSU found a way to win it, as they had against tougher competition earlier and after.

I watched the NC game. Essentially, I saw the same game Regan described, with one exception. Yes, the officials made a bad call. However, in my opinion, Pass Interference was called on the wrong Miami player. That call was sketchy at best. What they should have called occurred mere seconds prior. The outcome would have been the same, even had they gotten it right.

So, what's the point to all this? It goes without saying; Officials are human; they screw up, sometimes during what are referred to as "key" times. However, had either Miami or OSU done what needed to be done consistently and throughout the game, there would never have been a "key" time where-by a bad call would dictate the outcome. In utta woids, daze no sents cryin ova spilt milk. It's Christmas time. Enjoy!!!

    Regan (#15):

Compliment acknowledged, but why undermine it with a nonsensical statement? The team that wins is the "far better" team. The "on paper" stuff is imaginary; what plays out on the field is reality. (And yes, I apply that to the Illinois/OSU game this year.) :-)

Tom, this is College Football. All facts are subjective. :-)"

LOL!! True, true! I tip my Budweiser (or my Sam Adams or Guinness) to you--I just can't drink that light beer.

Finally getting my CFB fix in fellas. I can't get enough. I'm going to soak it in until the 2nd week of January.

Anybody see any replay rules changes coming in lieu of the Utah-Navy game and all the others that were botched this year?

    I'm not done crying....:O)

I can't let it go, my therapist won't let me. I'm greedy, I want all of the titles. I'm still thinking about the Penn State title game in 1986(Fiesta), the Alabama title game in 1992(Sugar) & the Washingtn Huskies loss in 2000 that cost us a shot @ Oklahoma.....:O)

Anyways......Good luck against LSU. I hope you guys have some players that can run a 4.33/40 yd dash. Your gonna need it.

Tom.....funny how the ref RIGHT NEXT TO THE PLAY call nothing. Not so much as even reaching for the hankie. Funny how that site blows up all of our(missed) calls when you guys most likely have just as many. Oh well.....i'll admit that if we could have just stopped that 4th down conversion late in the game, we win (DC/Coach Shannon playing conservative). That's about all I'll admit to....;o)

Well then see, you're right. That official DID blow it. Good thing the other one got it right. Your guys also had 4 chances from the one to tie the game after that, also. Guess they didn't have enough...SPEED...to get it done! LOL!

I will say that it'll be awfully tough to deal with if OSU loses again. Hell, even the OSU soccer team lost in their NC game against Wake Forest this month!! They are proving to be the team of second place this year!!

    I saw it.

The blown call had more to do with not knowing simple football rules. The announcers knew it, I, a casual(AHEM) college football fan knew it, and these bozos who are trained couldnt get a flag football-style call right?

BTW, lot of uncalled pick plays and holding calls in that tOSU/Ill that involved that gamblin ref......

    just sayin'

Ben, I picked Boise too. And, for a while there, I thought ECU was gonna run away with it. But, leave it to Skip Holtz to listen to one of his dad's pep-talks and swap QB's. It almost didn't work. So, maybe the MWC goes 3-2. That's not so bad.
