Coming Soon - Instant replay in the stands

Like it or not, instant replay is coming to college football in a major way. This season, the Atlantic Coast Conference, Southeastern Conference, the Big East, the Pac-10, the Sun Belt, Conference USA, Big 12 and Mountain West are all expected to petition for permission to use instant replay, joining the Big 10, who implemented their program last year.

But instant replay is also coming to the stands. Developed by Cal Berkeley's School of Information Management & Systems, mReplay will allow cellphone users to download and watch replays instantly. Taking it one step further, mReplay will also allow you to vote on the call and send the replay to friends. And the cost? Right now, mReplay is a free technology. It's still in beta development, but mReplay is slated to launch this summer.

    Awesome. I'd even pay for mReplay.

    Note to Lawrence: This replay system is only for the fans. It's fan democracy. We get to pick which replays to watch or vote on whether a ref's call was bull@#$.

    One downside I would see is that already, most cell networks in Stadiums are not sufficient to handle 90,000 fans and their regular calling, so I'd imagine the downloading would be even less reliable...especially if it is streaming.

    BFT,
    I agree totally. You can forget about using your cellphones in tailgating areas close to kickoff or right after the game as well as in the stadium pretty much the whole game. I've had this happen at both Clemson and South Carolina and they even bring in portable towers in Columbia for their games and it's insufficient.

    It works. Even with lots of users. I assure you. ;-) That's what's unique about mReplay... the have designed the system for this very situation.

    Btw, it works for Wifi PDAs too.
