12th game closer to reality

Earlier this week, the Division I management council tentatively approved a measure that would allow I-A and I-AA schools to add a permanent twelfth game to the football schedule for the 2006 season. The measure will go to the NCAA Board of Directors for a vote on April 28. The ACC was the only conference to oppose the measure.

James Joyner reacts to the news:

Somehow, though, this seems inconsistent with the long-proclaimed idea that a playoff for college football would interfere too much with the student athletes' studies.

Making it a year-in and year-out policy is going to have a severe impact on the Big East. You think about Louisville or Syracuse. They have to try to find what...five non-conference games? That's insane. This may stress the Big East to collapse. The implosion of the Big East may bring about a new basketball only conference, because the only way the Big East can move forward in football is to bring the schedule up to 10 or more member schools. This confirms that Tranghese officially ruined the Big East.

The 12th game (and even the 13th regular season game) has been an on & off reality for some time. Playoff backers still haven't figured out how to make the 16 games (or more) needed for a playoff work, and I think that's the NCAA's point. 12 plus a bowl is just about right.

Another thought - the 12th game standard schedule could revive some oft-missed rivalries in college football.

Miami-Florida comes to mind right away, as does Texas-Arkansas. What other rivalry games would you like to see as 12th games?

The Big East falling out between the hoops schools and the football schools was probably going to happen again within the next five years. This may speed it up based on what you've said Kevin.

There is one thought that the non I-A football schools will form an all-Catholic league but I'm not sure how feasible that would be.

I also forgot to mention above that Villanova is supposedly flirting with I-A again.

Everybody in the Big East (including the ones that are I-AA in football) is committed through '09-'10 right now.

I don't think Louisville will have much trouble filling the open slots.

As for the MWC, the addition of TCU was forcing the MWC teams to face cutting out future games they had committed to. The move to 12 games would allow them to honor the non-conference games they have already arranged.

I think both Miami and Florida have said that even if a 12th game was granted, they would not necessarily pursue continuous home-and-homes as they would like to play other big non-conference teams.

Ben - you don't think the Big East schools are going to pull their hair out trying to find five non-con games every stinkin' year?! That's an awful lot of scheduling year in/year out.

Why add a 12th game. I'm not interested in seeing my alma mater add a D1-A snoozer to the schedule. If a 12th game is added, make it compulsory to rotate big conference opponents like we see in basketball. A 20 year rotation of SEC - PAC10 opponents would be much more interesting.

I am happy that LSU-Tulane is about to happen! I have been working for this for years, makes for a great LOUISIANA rivelery! I also want to see at least a fifteen game season, plus a play off! This twelve game thing is just not enough, we need the extra revenue and extra games is the way to do that, I also would like to see TIGER STADIUM, to be increased to 115,000, and change of name to DIETZEL TIGER STADIUM, in honor of the ONLY coach to ever win a NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP in FOOTBALL uncontested, or shared, and did it with a perfect season, while competiting against another friend of mine, Coach Blaike of army that same year of 1958, who also had a perfect season except for a tie. The only coach to to win consective games Championship, lost to TENNESSEE by one contested point, or would have had two perfect seasons! I would like to see this done soon, because there are only two coaches left, the rest are gone, PAUL DIETZEL is same age as I, 81, and LARRY JONES, is younger, but they are the only two left, unless you count me,(ha) that my good friends DOUGH HAMLEY and CHARLEY PEAVY used to call their single wing coach, which I actually had that formation back in my football days in TENNESSEE. Please!PLEASE! Do something to honor PAUL, LARRY, who are alive, and honor those who have finished their race. Do it for the greatest coaching staff, and greatest head coach as far as I amconcerned! Terry, Pederson, Pevey, McClendon, I can't go on but I remember them all, my old mind is just not up to it, have received their reward, do it now before it is too late, Paul lives in BATON ROUGE, He and ANN love the place and the University. I believe that Paul made a big mistake going to WEST POINT, if he had stayed at LSU there is no telling how many CHAMPIONSHIPS that we would have had! It is time to forgive that and HONOR the very best Coach that LSU has ever had, I believe that he is the only real genius that LSU has ever had as a head coach, not many come along, help to get recognition for him that he deserves. Thank you, and GOD BLESS ALL! from the old Choctaw(Spirit of the SON!)maranatha!!! jon33 Mulliniks www.eteamz.com/jm (for pictures bottom we were young, top today and my blog for mostly news and comentary http://jonmulliniks.blogster.com
