Upon further review: instant replay
With the success of instant replay in 57 games last season for the Big 10, the NCAA has approved for conferences to implement "experimental" replay, with an NCAA standard system likely to follow in 2006. Instant replay will not be used in bowl games, but most of the conferences have now approved a plan for instant replay beginning this season. Here's a recap:
Big 10:
Only the replay official can stop play to review a call. All calls are reviewed by a replay official from the press box. If a play is in question, the replay official alerts the officials on the field and play is stopped. The replay official watches angles provided by the television coverage for that game. Calls involving clock and/or game management cannot be reviewed even if noticed by the replay official. Instant replay is used in all conference games. In non-conference games, the visiting team must agree to use the replay or it will not be available. The types of plays that are reviewable include plays that are governed by the sideline, goal line, end zone and end line, passing plays, and other detectable infractions, such as forward progress with respect to first down.
SEC:
Will use the Big 10 system. SEC will implement touch screen monitors so official can pause, replay, and switch feeds directly to speed reviews.
Big XII:
Will use Big 10 replay system. Big 12 will add a replay monitor on the sidelines for the referee, who will be permitted to communicate with the replay official but will not make the final call.
Pac-10:
Will use the Big 10 replay system.
ACC:
Will use the Big 10 replay system.
Big East:
Will implement instant replay for 2005 season. The conference has not announced the exact parameters of the replay system.
Mountain West:
The conference has proposed a coaches' challenge replay system to the NCAA for approval, similar to the program in place in the NFL. If the NCAA approves the system, the MWC will be the only conference to use the coaches' challenge format.
Conference USA:
C-USA will adopt the Big 10 replay system.
MAC:
No announcement regarding instant replay.
WAC:
Had planned to use replay only in televised games, but has since tabled plans to use replay this season.
