Top Five Venues for Tailgating
Stephen Linn, author of "The Ultimate Tailgater's Handbook," gives his top five venues for tailgating at college football games:
1. Jacksonville's Alltel Stadium for Georgia-Florida. About 100,000 show up for "The World's Largest Cocktail Party."2. LSU. Caldrons of Cajun dishes make it a one-of-a-kind event.
3. Oklahoma-Texas game. A heated rivalry at the Cotton Bowl, plus the midway games and rides of the Texas State Fair next door.
4. Texas A&M. The experience around Kyle Field has been likened to a cult.
5. Washington. On Lake Washington, hundreds of boats drop anchor before the big game. There's plenty of boat-hopping and food-swapping.
Not a bad top five, but --let's be honest-- it's hard not to have a good time tailgating, right?
I would also add Tennessee to the list - the food, the Volunteer Navy, and the the ladies make it an experience not to be missed.

Hey, the dude wrote a book about tailgating. I have to presume that he went to Penn State at some point for research. Still, it's hard to argue with the top five on the list.
And as far as getting drunk, I think that applies just about everywhere. I haven't known LSU fans to be any less hospitable than most. No one will treat you as well as a Texas A&M fan, but I wouldn't knock LSU for being inhospitable. For visiting fans, run-ins with drunk fans happen everywhere - even at Tennessee.

I can appreciate the "World's Largest Cocktail Party" getting a high ranking, but that's a one-shot deal, and I'd wager the Southern and Grambling fans'd give them a run for their money, partywise, in the annual Bayou Classic in New Orleans.
LSU (and the other fanbases in contention) put on those bigass parties 7 Saturdays a year. And that doesn't even count the fans who gather to tailgate in abstentia while the game's on the radio.

At LSU, if you're a fan, it's awesome. But if you're a visitor, they disrespect you individually and as a group. Don't be surprised to get a beer bottle through your window if you have an out-of-state license plate. When your band takes the field (no matter how great the band), the student body has been known to turn their backs and look away. Then there's always the thrown beer, ice, constant vulgar slurs, etc. (Kind of like the Pitt student body.)
LSU fans aren't content to be bad sports just at home. I was at the first game renewing the rivalry with A&M at College Station. Drunk LSU fans had to be arrested for brawling in the stands. That never happens at Kyle Field. One of their fans took an "ATM" flag and painted an "E" on each end, running it across Kyle Field's "sacred grass". What class.
And whether or not it's technically called "tailgaiting", anyone who's been to A&M's Midnight Yell Practice knows that few other events can compare to it.

"Yell Practice!!!!" ... I have never heard of such an absurd thing. If the FAggies at College Station weren't so worried about their appearances they wouldn't have to have Yell Practice.

I think the fact that you find it necessary to identify your grove with your school counters your own point.
By the way, has Ole Miss finally secured the rights to use Granny Clampett's likeness since they retired their unPC mascot?
(And it's never to early in the day for a GO TO HELL OLE MISS! GO TO HELL!)

I will agree A&M does not have that great of tailgaiting. But we do have one of the best gameday atmospheres. Also, Kyle Field is not "sacred grass". The "sacred grass" that dave speaks of is the grass surrounding the memorial student center. The center and the grass surrounding it are a tribute to all Aggies who have fought and died for our great country. So if you think it is funny to disrespect people that have given there lives for our country, you're an ass. Show some respect.

LSU, Tennessee, Georgia, and Florida all great pre game parties. Florida fans are the worst, throwing a bag of urine on Phillip Fulmer's wife. LSU classless also. Auburn fans not so bad, after that horrible Pac-10 school USC went into Auburn in 2004 and won 23-0. probably more like stunned silence. I was there. The Auburn folk were actually decent to us Pot-Smoking, Surfer-dude So-Cal fans.
When is LSU and Florida going to nut it up and schedule USC,CAL or UCLA, and go home and home. I will give Tennessee credit,They play out west a lot, as has Alabama and Auburn. I would love to see those Florida and LSU fans act like buffoons outside the LA coliseum. The locals would kick their asses. They would need their jackie Gleason look alike depuites and state pol-leese, to escort them.

Give me a break, Pete. LSU fans are no more rude or inhospitable than fans at Texas A&M, Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, or Arkansas. I know that from many years of first hand experience and multiple road trips to all of those stadiums.
Funny that I've only missed about 10 LSU home games in the last 35 years, and I never seem to see all this non-stop window breaking and vehicular vandalism, bottle throwing, spitting, and savage assualts and batteries on visiting fans. Yes, there are unfortunate, isolated incidents where people behave like jackasses, and those people are an embarrassment to the school. These things happen at EVERY football school. You'd have a hard time convincing me that LSU has a higher rate of such incidents than many other SEC schools, or other major football schools for that matter.
This whole notion that Tiger Stadium is filled with nothing but angry, drunk, stupid cajuns looking to do physical harm to visitors is by and large a myth, and a rather annoying one at that.
By the way, I've had vehicles keyed, spit on, and air let out of tires at Ole Miss, Texas A&M, and Georgia. I've also had people attempt to pick fights with our group, who wasn't bothering anyone, at Mississippi State and Florida.
Also, the eATMe thing is pretty damned funny. Only an Aggie would get his undies in a bunch about that, or about "sacred grass".

dave,
I can't believe that you would say such a thing. That you wuld take something so serious, so lightly. I really hope you enjoy your wonderful freedoms that men and women have fought and died for. I hope you don't take those wonderful things for granted. And I would sure hope that you wouldn't spit in their faces and trample their graves by disrespecting a memorial as such. It is the same thing as pissing on the Vietnam Wall in D.C. Just because it is a memorial done by a school to remember its fallen HEROES rather than by the country doesn't change the fact of what it stands for. I sure hope you don't call yourself an American, because you give the rest of us a bad name.

I shouldn't have gotten off on a tangent when the subject was supposed to be about great tailgaiting. But try taking your young kids to a game and have to answer their questions about what the LSU fans mean with their "eATMe" flag. No, it's NOT funny. I took my kid to Heinz Field a few years ago for the A&M game at Pitt. The Pitt fans were disgusting (mainly the tie-dyed, eyebrow-pierced studyent body whose entire vocabulary was vulgar). There's no reason why fans should act like that. It's trashy and low-class. And I'm sure you're right that it's just the way it is at most sporting events these days (I've been to games in Washington, DC and Philadelphia too, unfortunately). But during my entire exerience at Texas A&M, I only saw a drunken brawl once, and that was when LSU came to town. I've been disgusted by fans at t.u. in Austin, Oklahoma & Texas Tech fans. But I thought the fans from Nebraska, Notre Dame and Baylor were stand up folks. Clemson & Virginia Tech too.
Maybe I'm thin-skinned, but maybe if people had fun tailgaiting without getting so drunk, everyone could have a better time.

Before moving to the south I tailgated at Michigan, Pitt, Penn State, Ohio State, West Virginia and Syracuse. I am of the opinion there are at least half a dozen places to tailgate in the ACC and SEC that are better than anyplace in the northeast or midwest. If for no other reason you don't freeze your buns off in November. The ACC and SEC schools I have found that are great for tailgating include LSU, Tennessee, Auburn, Alabama, Georgia and Clemson. Clemson has the nicest, most considerate people anywhere. If you are from the northeast or midwest, you have no idea what tailgating is until you have tailgated in the south.

This is for you Dogman, why would class act schools like florida want to go out there to la and play a bunch of pot smocking surfer dudes that play in such a weak division that if wasnt for the BCS screwing up again and putting the wrong 2 teams in the Championship game again . yall been looking from the outside like you should. Heck you got number 1 rank again this year and only play 3 top 20 teams with none of them in the top ten. Atleast UF FSU UM UT all atleast play min. 4 top teams and most play at least 2 in top 10 and all 4 in the top 20. so Be careful what you wish for you might just have to one day play a perenial top school like we do over here in the east. not weak WAC and PAC schools that our High School football teams could beat. Heck id put Vanderbilt to beat atleast 75% of the WAC AND PAC. Have a nice day. As far as kicking our asses out side your lil coliseum i would hope yall could having the prefered numbers. and as far as the bag of urine at fulmers wife dont go saying FLORIDA FANS try STUPID FAN because majority of us just as pissed at his actions.

We all have retarded fans who make us look bad on occasion, I have honestly had more bad encounters in Knoxville with my own fans rather than the opposing teams. Most UT fans are hospitable and tailgate with the opposite side regularly. Any mature fan respects the other team as well as it's fans, bnot to say we can't ridicule, scream, and tease the enemy, it's all part of the fun. When Miami last came to Knoxville they ran out of the tunnel after halftime and right through the middle of our bands routine, alot of people were pissed but I cracked up, they were simply being Miami, the NWO of the NCAA, and it was priceless.

I think the schools have to be evaluated on student population, the percent of students that show up for a game, the size of the city and percentage of townspeople "into" the action. Perhaps a school like Wake Forest Univ. with a student body of 4000 should get some award for filling up their stadiums and coliseums. Their athletic departments have done a phenomenal job advertising and involving the city in comparison to the size of school.

About LSU "not being any less hospitable than any other place", I would have to strongly disagree (not because of me being an ole miss fan, but because of what goes on at death valley to the opposing team's fans). I know a guy that brought a date to an ole miss LSU game at death valley, and she got hit in the head with a beer bottle from an upper deck LSU fan. Another story goes to tell of a visting fan getting urined on by an LSU fan in the upper deck. Finally, another guy i know got hit by a beer bottle, but luckily it did not break. He then wisely threw it back up to the guy who threw it at him, hitting him square in the mouth with it (i had a good laugh hearing that one). I dont know about anyone else, but it doesnt seem to me like there is any other college out there that is that disrespectful to fans of the opposing team. So there you have it people, let it be known that LSU fans are the most disrespectful and most obnoxious fans in football. GO TO HELL LSU

I am an Aggie and have always thought that our stadium experience is like no other. As for the tailgating, well I visited Clemson this past weekend for the game and am still talking to all my friends about what an amazing experience it was. We lost the game but it was still enjoyable because their fans are amazingly nice and the atmosphere was unbelievable. There were people tailgating as early as noon which was eight hours from kick-off. The amount of poeple that were tailgating blew my mind away! Clemson, thanks for the awesome experience! You guys are great!

Clemson's atmosphere is the best I have ever experienced. And yes the folks are alomst always friendly, great looking girls and good BBQ is always available too. Virginia Tech's place is OK for these parts too. I have found the weakest that I have ever seen has to be UVa. UVa needs to be schooled in tailgating but what can you expect from a crowd that sits throughout the game and wears ties. Even Al Groh asked for more participation & enthusiasm from the Wahoo's when he first came to Coach there. If you're looking for a good tailgating atmosphere bypass UVa and keep heading southbound into the Carolina's or maybe West three hours to Blacksburg.

Ole Miss does have the best tailgating anywhere. But if you where to put it outside of Tiger Stadium, it would be the pinnacle of all sporting events. And if you have never been to both, you have know idea what tailgating or college football is all about. yelling parties, seas of orange, whatever, get down to Oxford and that hell hole Baton Rouge.

All schools have their fair share of obnoxious fans who are a disgrace to their universities, but West Virginia and Wisconsin fans have to be the worst - the most inbred, low class, rednecks in the country (knocking old men down, cussing at small children and throwing bags of urine at opposing fans). I'd be ashamed to call myself a Mountaineer or a cheese eating Beeahdger
As for great tailgating though, you have to come to the Horseshoe in Columbus where people show up the night before for late afternoon and night games (and I'm not talking about RV'ers either). There may be 105,000 inside the 'shoe, but there may be another 100,000 outside in tents, grilling and partying.

There is absolutely no tailgaiting at Kyle Field. The boys in the jack boots conduct many self-centered "family oriented" rituals that include grabbing themselves to feel the pain of the players on the field. It has more of a Jim Jones/ Branch Davidian atmosphere than a football atmosphere. They do however break windows out of opposing teams cars (LSU mid- 80's.) Tiger Stadium is the Mecca of tailgating. They even have "Krewes" who compete among themselves for the honor of best tailgaiters and an RV lot that makes you wonder how there is that much money in the state post-Katrina. Don't over look UGA. The Dawgs can tailgate and their women aren't dogs!

I've been to many stadiums. Here's my take: Texas A&M and Clemson have the nicest fans....not even close. Best stadium is the Horseshoe in Columbus, although the tailgating is pretty weak....sorry Buckeyes, Hinegate is a joke. Michigan State has the drunkest students I have ever witnessed...wow these kids were hammered! Best tailgating is Clemson! Kegs & Eggs folks....even for a night game. Classiest fans in college football (along with the Texas A&M Aggies. Try the Dixie Chicken in College Station if ya get out there folks!

Penn State won it all on the SI.com contest this year, and for good reason. We start Friday night (4 AM the day of the game doesn't cut it in Happy Valley), have a killer time, and the party goes on all weekend. Also - as only Ohio State fans ever dispute - we're a pretty hospitable bunch. If you're ever here on our fine campus for a tailgate, watch out for the portions of the Blue Band that roam the lots all day, the guy in the giant JoPa head, more cardboard cutouts of Joe than you can count, Paternoville, and the best students in the world. Oh, and watching the football game with 110,000 of your closest friends is a hell of a way to highlight the night. We are... Penn State!

Good list....I'll just disregard all the arguing and the "your classless"..."no your classless" crap. As an Aggie, I will have to disagree with putting Texas A&M at the top of a tailgating list. While A&M has an incredible game day atmosphere....it's tailgating is not top 5. I'd take A&M out and put the Tenn Vols in our place. I hope to visit LSU someday.....in my experience in visiting opposing stadiums is that you if you can't take a little heat then stay away. It's all in fun and if you make an effort to be friendly most folks will just offer a beer and have a good time.

it seems pretty obvious that everyone on this board just voted for their school. there's no way to make the perfect "best tailgating" list. there's too much stuff to take into account. for example, i don't think a school is great at tailgating just because they have a large enough fan base to seat 109K fans. and you can say "we start tailgating on friday..." that is BS. NOBODY goes to the stadium on friday and stays through the game on saturday, not if you drink the whole time. everyone just needs to realize you'll have the most fun at YOUR school, because that's what you're used to and you get along with everyone there.

Obviously, a typical mistake has been made by these commentors.....MISJUDGING Ole Miss. sure, we may not win every frikin football game..but hell, we sure as hell win EVERY party in the SEC (closely compared with LSU and other "Deep" southern Universities). SO.. "VOLFAN"..I belive you will understand WHY exactly i choose to Tailgate in the beautiful Grove in the southern atmosphere at Ole Miss with a whiskey and coke in my hand, rather than chugging a natty light in front of the NASTY Neyland Stadium, surrounded by the Disgusting metropolitan city of Knoxville in the background, which i know personally from being fomr TN.. (isn't a pleasing southern traditon to me..nope.). One visit to the classic Southern Beauty of the Historically Southern town of Oxford and the campus at Ole Miss, and you will realize the true southern experience you get while visiting. So...Tailgaiting. OLE MISS is the one and only mecca for tailgaitng. Where else can you find a 4-5 tohusand square foot sanctioned area known as the famous GROVE to Tailgate. as the tents are decorated with fine china and Southern Cuisine..and the young southern gentlemen and ladis are dressed in their Sthilletos, flower dresses, and sport coats and ties. All in all, the Grove is a River of Southern hospitality mixed with beer, cocktails, and friendly faces, deeming it the best damn southern kingdom to tailgate.

Come on guys. We all have great fans, good fans, fairweather fans, and drunk obnoxious fans. I am an LSU grad and to be honest years ago I was one of the obnoxious drunk fans. I've grown up since then. LSU will give you a TigerBait from your car to the parking lot then feed you when you reach the stadium and get you buzzed after the game--win or lose. I think I can add a little flavor to this conversation. I have just stumbled across this board and this topic is pretty good.
I grew up a Vandy fan and then worked at UK for 6 years traveling for 4 of those with the team. Obviously I know bad football and can appreciate good football/gameday atmosphere with a bit of objecivity. I have been to all the SEC stadiums and a couple others in unfortunate conferences that are not in the SEC. Here is my take on the top 3 gameday atmospheres in the SEC:
1. LSU - LSU fans are the most knowledgeable football fans around. They know when to cheer, they know when to be quiet. Perennial powers every year, there is nothing like walking through campus getting Tiger Bait yelled at you. I got a ride to the stadium one game in the back of a jacked up chevy truck with a keg flowing. Those guys know how to party. Now, that being said, the time I went when I was on the team bus, there were kids as small as 7-8 years old that were flipping us off. Now that is breeding some serious football fans there.
2. Alabama - This is by far the most picturesque football locale I have ever been to. The quad, The Waysider restaurant and all the southern belles make Alabama a great location. I think every college football fan should go to the Iron Bowl once and there would never be an argument as to the best Rivalry in football. I have never seen so many people shake a shaker in unison. The Frats in their coats and ties is a priceless indication that you are in the south and the hospitality was second to none. My experiences in Tuscaloosa have been second to none, but they have some stiff competition in LSU. Dreamland Ribs also have to be considered.
3. Ole Miss - I think Ole Miss could have been higher on this list if it weren't for Pat O'Briens in Memphis the night before. They redshirt Miss America candidates at Ole Miss and the Grove is something everyone needs to see.
That is the top three. I have been to Knoxville, and not impressed. Sheer numbers do not make a good gameday atmosphere. It's just more obnoxious idiots than anywhere else. (Sorry, my UK and Vandy bias is showing, isn't it?)
Kentucky is getting better, but until you have a football team, atmosphere doesn't matter....
