Top Ten College Home Fields
Home field advantage: some teams have it, some teams don't. When Oklahoma at Baylor, there's more red in the stands than green. On the other hand, few visiting teams survive a trip to LSU, Ohio State and Oregon - often because of the advantage home teams can have with their fans.
Rivals.com has a run down of the teams with the biggest home field advantage:
1) 1. Lane Stadium (Virginia Tech)
Lane Stadium in Blacksburg, Va., doesn't blow people away by the brute strength of a massive stadium, but with knowledgeable fans that always reach a frenzied pitch at the right time, the Hokies make the most of their numbers.Every good stadium has at least one end designed for deafening noise levels, and the enclosed South End Zone at Lane Stadium fits the bill perfectly. Holding more than 11,000 screaming Virginia Tech fans, the section amplifies noise and renders audibles useless. That's not to mention the isolation factor. With the nearest major airport nearly 45 minutes away, opponents' fans are never out in force at Lane Stadium.
The X-factor: Beamer Ball
The hard-nosed Hokies are never outhustled. With the most intense special teams unit in college football year-in and year-out -- not to mention the defense's penchant for scoring points -- there's never a dull moment at a game in Blacksburg.
Capacity: 66,233
2) LSU
3) Ohio State
4) Florida
5) Penn State
6) Oregon
7) Texas A&M
8) Wisconsin
9) Florida State
10) Auburn
It's interesting to see some teams with awesome home game experiences, like Tennessee, West Virginia & Michigan, missing the list. That said, outside of Auburn, it's hard to argue with anyone that did make the list.

Then again, there's one school that hasn't lost at home since...2001...and they're not on the list!
Granted, I think that's more about the coach and the team, 'cause the Coliseum sucks.

This doesn't have anything to do with the headline, but they took off the post a comment box on the realignment page. so here it goes.
Every year people get mad at the BCS and this is just my idea of how to fix it and straighten up conferences.
The ACC ought to have went with a North-South format that would make more sense. They needed a way to keep Duke and NC basketball playing each other and FSU-Miami football in seperate divisions so they could meet in the championship game played in, guess where, Alltel Stadium in Jacksonville, Florida, but anyway. Geographically heres a plan
North- BC, Maryland, VT, Virginia, Duke, Wake Forest
South- Miami, FSU, GT, Clemson, NC, NC State
The NC schools are interchangeableThe Big East ought to add the four independents and split into divisions such as
West- Notre Dame, Pitt, West Virginia, Cincinatti, Louisville, South Florida
East- Syracuse, Navy, Army, Rutgers, Connecticut, TempleIowa State ought to join its' rival Iowa in the Big 11 to create
West-Iowa, Iowa State, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois, Northwestern
East-Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Penn State, Indiana, PurdueMaybe Air Force could join the Big 12 North divion to make
North-Air Force, Colorado, Nebraska, Missouri, Kansas, Kansas State
South-Baylor, Texas, Texas Tech, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Oklahoma StateIf Stanford would cooperate the PAC-10 could add BYU and UTAH to form
West-Washington, Washington State, Oregon, Oregon State, Stanford, California
East-USC, UCLA, BYU, UTAH, Arizona, Arizona StateC-USA could add TCU, LA TECH, and North Texas to the west, send UTEP back to the WAC and move Tulane to the East so it would look like this
West-Tulsa, TCU, SMU, North Texas, Rice, Houston, LA TECH
East-Tulane, Memphis, Southern Miss, Marshall, UAB, East Carolina, Central FloridaUTEP and the WAC could rejoin the MWC to create
West-Hawaii, San Diego State, Fresno State, San Jose State, Nevada, Idaho, Boise State
East-UTEP, New Mexico, New Mexico State, Colorado State, Wyoming, Utah State, UNLVThe SEC is in great shape so they stay unchanged.
The Sun Belt would stay the same except for the loss of North Texas, who dominates this league anyway, and serve kind like an entry level league besides no national champ is going to come from this conference
Much of the same for the MAC14 teams in the WAC and C-USA may seem like a lot but they are used to it.
No major changes would take place and schools woiuld largely be playing teams they have histories and play anyway.A playoff system would be easily derived from this.
Take the 8 major conference Champions maybe to add a little more incentive (Last year for example, may have the wrong team listed)
ACC-Virgina Tech
SEC-Auburn
Big East-(was BC but I'll say Louisville)
Conference USA-(Louiville, but putting Memphis)
Big 12-Oklahoma
Big 10-Michigan?
PAC 10-USC
WAC/MWC-Boise state(Utah would be in PAC-10)Take Each champions rank (BSC, Media poll, or whatever) and seed them based on there rank.
If a conference fails to produce a ranked champion all the seeds would move up then the highest ranking non champion wuuld then be given the 8th seed for instance last year it would have been Texas. So what do you think?gaffbag said:

I love Michigan, but from all of the anecdotal evidence I have heard The Big House, despite its capacity, never actually gets that loud and you don't feel the same degree of intensity because of its design (relatively flat and spread out, one layer instead of tiered, etc). If it were a more cavernous arena with fans all on top of one another I have no doubt the advantage would be quite different.

The ACC divisions are 1)Football only
2)Designed to maintain longstanding series.North and South doesn't work because the South Division would be brutal.
While the North would be an absolute cakewalk. How many times would VPI win that division?
Besides if you put the line geographically State and Wake are a tad further south than Dook and UNC.The divisions make sense, just not to the naked eye.

Also I missed the geography line without looking at a map, besides they were interchangeable anyway. The idea was for each conference to have an undisputed champion and a lucrative championship game and divisions with the same number of teams. Plus I made up the lists of all of the schools from memory. Not bad for a guy who follows primarily one conference.

I'm all about the Hokie props, but the rationale given makes no sense. Lane was deafening before the SEZ was constructed, and in fact, last year opposing fans sat in part of the SEZ. It helps hold noise in, yes, but it's not nearly the center of noise -- the student-dominated North end zone and the partially-student east stands are the keys there.
The "geographic isolation" bit is a total crock, too -- WVU, UVa and Marshall always bring good crowds. The reason you don't often see many visiting fans at Lane is that with a capacity of just over 66K, and a few thousand season ticket requests being turned away this year, we don't have many tickets left to offer the opposition. The teams that do bring fans usually get them in via friends and family having Hokie connections.

I don't know why colorado isn't on the list. You can party all the time, be drunk at the game, throw all kinds of things at the opposing fans and their players and not get arrested for it. Great place to be if you are an idiot, which all cu fans are.

Stop arguing with the list. For one thing, it is only one organization's opinion, and not absolute fact. The only absolute fact is that Ohio State is rightly in the top 3. Screw that team from up north and screw Rocky Top.

This is not accurate. Home field advantage in and of itself means little. Home field advantage coupled with a good football team does mean something. Penn State does not have an imposing stadium right now because regardless of how hyped up the fans are the team sucks.

Hey guys,
I'm a UT alumnus and Vols' fan, but let's face reality regarding Neyland Stadium in recent years. I have the utmost respect for UT fans and the great UT football tradition at Neyland Stadium. However, the Vols have not been too intimidating at home since 2002. Consider the recent losses in Knoxville.
2004
11/06/04 UT lost to Notre Dame 17-13
10/02/04 UT lost to Auburn 34-10
2003
10/11/03 UT lost to Georgia 41-14
2002
11/19/02 UT lost to Miami 26-3
10/26/02 UT lost to Bama 34-14
* 10/15/02 UT took 6 overtimes to beat Arkansas
9/21/02 UT lost to Florida 30-13
No wonder Neyland Stadium did not make the Top 10. home fields. There has been little home field advantage for the Vols in big games in recent years. Let's hope this trend ends in 2005.

I know they have not been amazing the last couple years, but even Lee Corso said gameday in Lincoln compares to no other stadium! Memorial Stadium has had over 250 consecutive sell out games . . .

I too am a biased Iowa alum, however... I've seen their decent mid 90s teams get smacked by OSU, PSU, and Mich constantly. Nowadays they have an 18 game home winning streak. You gotta give em points for painting the visitor's locker room pink. Definitely Top 20, maybe Top 15, but not Top 10.
Also RE: Penn State at #5 - Iowa won the last 3 games there vs the Nitts... then again so have most teams the last 5 years. Insert requisite "Beaver" joke here.

Cal will be playing Oregon at Autzen this year, after narrowly beating them last year at Memorial. I hope it's not so loud that it scares our new QB. He still seems a little skitish at this point, and he hasn't been up against a tough team yet. Luckily we have some good running backs to pick up the slack.
I love how people get all passionate about being the loudest stadium, as if that's a compliment. All it really means is that there isn't anything else to do on a Saturday so everyone is at the game. This is why the south is so good at football. :)

Here is what both LSU and Texas A&M have in common: Both have come into the LANE in the past 4 years and gone home with a blowout loss. Not only that, but an undermanned VT squad walked into Kyle Field (the week after blasting LSU) and beat the Aggies, so lose the atittude. I have all the respect for the fans from these two schools. They were a good bunch of people and the games were a good time, but look at the matchups. Hell, when A&M came to town, they braved a hurricane with us, those are some great fans.

For the Miami game this year it got to 124 decibels. I have been fortunate to go to an Oregon football game and it was extremely loud. The stadium is shaped perfectly to trap the noise. Hell, LSU's spring game feels like the atmosphere at a virginia tech home game. You have got to be kidding me. Your conference is overrated to. Did anyone see that azz kicking that LSU put on Miami at the Peach Bowl? Give me a break. Also anyone ever heard of the earthquake game? That was where it was so loud in death valley, it measured on the richter scale. So... a real "poll" is whomever gets the drunkest before, during and after the game? if it isn't the sea of red, then it must be the seminoles "war chant"... but all crowd noise aside... for a team (not fan) i think that the best home field advantage would go to colorado (thin air) or any deep south team(humid heat) psychologically however... it could go to USC drone of the team song, or again... the sea of red. Since no one has specified the type of advantage... or even a broad scope of requirements, anyone and no one could be right... every stadium has an advantage, whether its noise... psychological... the field surface itsself... wind... elevation... history... win percentage (at home) and all of this doesn't even include the time frome for said teams... but i'll take a realistic "whack" at it. The last 20 years: Nebraska Last 10: Nebraska Last 5: USC Last 2: Wisconsin/LSU/Penn state and last and never least last season alone: LSU

All of you Texas Tech guys bad-mouthing A&M are insane to think that your stadium is even in the ballpark with the top 10. And it's like a Tech fan to talk out their ass like that. The only thing yall have going for yall is a crowd of idiots that throw shit all over the field, which is expected from a third-tier school I suppose. Kyle field deserves to be on the list, Clemson, Florida, LSU, Tennessee should be mentioned.

Why are we argueing over where the LOUDEST college football stadium is... people, it is FACT that Death Valley in CLEMSON, SC is the loudest stadium in the country. 126 decibels reached against Miami in 2005. So stop argueing, there is no reason to. Heres some more...Florida fans. shut up and listen to Chris Rix.Chris Rix: "Well, Florida was loud in the Swamp. But the loudest, not only the stadium, but the loudest place I have ever been around in my life was definitely Death Valley. I was yelling at the top of my lungs in that first series and I couldn't even hear what I was saying. My voice was gone after the second series, so we had to signal everything. That place was unreal in how loud it was there and I don't think I will ever be in a louder place than playing at Clemson." not satisfied? how about Larry Coker- "The Swamp was loud, Clemson is deafening." Ease up world and give Death Valley the respect it deserves.

"In 2005, the outdoor stadium noise record of 121 decibels set by LSU fans in Tiger Stadium was broken by Clemson fans as the Tigers lost a thrilling three-overtime game to the Miami Hurricanes with a noise of 126 decibels, louder than a Boeing 747 taking off."

you are crazy death valley should be in there somewhere. There is no place that has ever been louder. we hold the record for the loudest outdoor stadium. if you get inside your own 20 then you can forget about scoring.

I would have thought that A&M would be higher on the list. Sure, others have more people (Tenn. should make that list), and some are just crazy (LSU should be #1)... but when it comes to the 12th man, Aggies are just insane. I think Clemson should be pretty close to that list as well. That said, give the Tech fans a break... they have two obstacles... first off, they live in Lubbock. Secondly, come 9/30/06, they've gotta play at Kyle.

Florida State and Oregon are cute picks and i do admit are respectable stadiums, but how about alabama or tennessee. As for Penn St. and Texas A&M, that looks like nostalgia to me. I know their stadiums aren't selling out in a sub par season(fair weather fans). Have any of the people that made the lists been to the South? The rest is pretty solid but the difference between Neyland stadium and the Horshoe is quite noticeable and i don't even like Tennessee

#1 LSU - Insane. Loudest place I've ever been, bar none. The Tiger, the drunk almuni, the costumes... And the night games? Wow.
#2 Florida - Thanks to Spurrier, the Swamp is a scary place. So loud, so hot, so mean.
#3 Ohio State - Tradition, an amazing band, and crazy crazy fans.
#4 PSU - Huge, dedicated and loud alumni, the roar, and Joe Pa, who proved last year that he's still got it. Don't forget the 79% home win average.
#5 Tennessee - The last few years notwithstanding, Neyland is huge, loud, and viscious. And Rocky Top gets to you eventually.
#6 Texas A&M - Even when not a great team, the Aggies still bring it. Tradition and noise rule, can't argue with the 12th Man.
#7 FSU - The warchant, the spear, and an 89% home win average over the last 10 years.
#8 Auburn - Brutally hot, loud crazy fans, the constant underdog mentality, and an 80% home win average over the last 65 years.
#9 Michigan - It's the biggest stadium in the land. How do you argue with that?
#10 Oregon - Small but brutal, they're the craziest in the Pac 10.As an Auburn fan, I'm partial to the SEC, but I tried to be as fair as possible. I honestly think LSU and UF are the most insane places to be a visiting team.

The hokies deserve some more love. The only reason you guys think its so rediculous is because you haven't been to Lane... most opposing team fans haven't. Few fans make it to blacksburg cause of its seclusion from any big airport. On top of that, come see a thursday night game at lane.

Rugby players spend a lot of time physical training Compared to other form of sports.I have read the
Rugby laws mentioned on this site. It's a gripping sport which targets the grip strength and the active mindedness of a player. American football and rugby league are also primarily collision sports, but their tackles tend to terminate much more quickly. For professional rugby, players are often chosen on the basis of their size and apparent strength and they develop the skill and power over the passage of time. In modern rugby considerable attention is given to fitness and aerobic conditioning as well as basic weight training.Ana said:

Nowadays, due to the improvements of technology and the development of the Internet everyone can watch live football from a

champions league soccer, cup matches live, all broadcasted on the Internet, sometimes free and sometimes after paying a small
fee. You can enjoy many quality football matches easier then ever. How can you do this? Almost every soccer match that is
taking place somewhere in the world is broadcasted through a live football stream that you can access from anywhere and
furthermore most of the matches come with an English commentary. So whenever there's a major football event you know that it's
certainly broadcasted somewhere on the Internet and you can watch everything and you only pay a few dollars! For more

Vol fans leave too early to make it loud when it counts. I remember being in a boat on the river watching them leave as Florida drove to win the game a few years ago. Most of the fans are yelling at Fulmer and the rest griping about the refs. It can be VERY loud at times but regular enough to be in the top 10.

Getting back to the topic at hand, VT is extremely school-spirited, and they know how to get the fans going. Examples would be: blasting "Enter Sandman" before every game and the traditional ringing of keys on the opponents' 3rd down. It signifies a "key play." Go to a game in our Lane and you'll catch on.

I love how no one ever gives any respect to Death Valley in Clemson, SC..Obviously not many "blogers" have been there. Ask anyone whos been to a BIG GAME (i.e.-FSU, Miami, BC, USC, VT, GT, older NCSU, Texas A&M, etc.) what it's like in that stadium. I'm sure that Texas A&M fans (who were there in '05) will vouch for the stadium. Ask FSU fans. Ask Miami fans. Ask around, see what is said. Or attend a big game, EVEN attend a small game and it's probably louder than 95% of the nation. Its called fan base and stadium design people.

This is coming from a fan that spends his fall traveling to bigtime college football games. I went to the Virginia Tech/Miami game last year and the noise level didn't impress me. Granted UM throttled VT, the stadium wasn't very intimidating in the beginning of the game. Here's my top 10, in terms of the loudest stadiums:
1. Florida - student section is 40,000 strong, nothing compares
2. Penn St
3. LSU
4. Ohio St
5. Georgia
6. Wisconsin - these people are crazy
7. UCLA - if you've never been to the rose bowl, you gotta go
8. Clemson - the stadium is half buried in the ground, if the ever close off the other endzone this place will be a top 5.
9. Tennessee
10. MichiganAuburn can get loud, Oregon is awesome but just isn't that noisy, I went to USC when the weren't good so the stadium was half empty, and ND lets in too many away fans.

My Top Ten (In terms of loudness)..from experience, blog reading from non-biased fans, players who have played, and coaches comments:
1.) Clemson- 126 decibels reached in 2005 vs Miami. West End Zone now specifically designed to rebound sound...it will be even louder. Yes, my opinion may be a little biased, but I challenge you to attend a game.
2.) Florida- comparison to Clemson-The Swamps lower bowl doesn't compare to Clemson, but the upper bowl is louder.
3.) LSU- Earthquake...Seismograph...you know the story.
4.) Texas A&M- Watch the fans sway....
5.) Tennessee- LOTS of people!!
6.) Ohio State- Almost as many people
7.) Penn State- Never been, many people say it's loud
8.) Wisconsin- Also never been, many people say it's loud
9.) Georgia- very ANNOYING loud, fans kick bleachers constantly.
10.) West Virginia
ALMOST= Michigan- heard it's fairly overated, VT, FSU, Nebraska, Auburn, Washington,

The new HOME FIELD advantage goes to Oregon. Forget about the fans...They have the refs in their back pocket. You cannot argue that 80,000 fans cannot make as much noise or screw a team over faster and more definite than 2 officials can. Sooners got DUCKED OVER !

hey tony!
I think all the fans with a tide box with wheels gives the away team a good laugh which causes them to release the jitters......opposite of home field advantage =) tide has square wheels =)M GO BLUE
