Black Coaches Association issues hiring grades
The Black Coaches Association has released it's grades for the recruitment of minority coaches in D-IA and DI-AA. As per the report (pdf) the BCA is seeking to make the process more inclusive for coaches, irrespective of color.
The BCA is seeking changes in the way we hire head coaches in football. We want the best candidates, irrespective of color, to be interviewed for the opening. The Black Coaches Association Hiring Report Card is helping to make that happen. Next, the BCA wants the best candidate to be chosen irrespective of race. With only three African-American head coaches in the 2005 season, college football is emphatically the most segregated position in all of college sport. There still have been only 19 African Americans who have ever been a Division IA head football coach.
As can be seen from the grades in the report card, schools received an “A” without hiring a coach of color because they took their time in the selection process, had a diverse selection committee, interviewed a diverse pool of candidates, used the resources of the BCA and/or the NCAA’s Minority Opportunities and Interest Committee, and followed university affirmative action policies.
In it's report, the BCA found that five DI-A schools received an "A" grade and seven received a "B" grade. Of particular interest, Notre Dame (who endured some questions about the firing of Ty Willingham) received a "B" for hiring Charlie Weis, while Washington (who hired Ty Willingham) also received a "B".

Have any of the coaches in the BCA ever sat in on any interviews or hiring decisions by any of the above Universities? But they're given credibility because they look at the skin color of a staff. Guilty as charged until proven innocent? I hope they don't become judges, otherwise we'll all be doomed.

Marshall got an F for hiring Snyder an alumni and D corrdinator of Ohio State on the spare of the moment. This is ridiculous

I think these grades are unfair.
South Carolina jumped at Steve Spurrier because he was the obvious choice. He practically had the job before the previous coach ended his employment. Why give them an "F" for not consulting the BCA before making that hire? Not interviewing a minority because you've already made your decision does not realistically constitute a lack of minority-inclusion, which the BCA is trying to portray.
Same thing with Florida. They had one shot at Urban Meyer, and they got him. Why would they even consider interviewing other candidates, white or black?
If a team decides to hire from within, does that mean failure also? There are so many factors that go into the hiring process that aren't taken into consideration for these grades, that one has to feel that they are utterly meaningless.

This is the biggest bunch of crap ive ever seen, dont these guys have any thing better to do than worry about what color a coach is.I mean realy do you think a university realy cares what color a coach is as long as he can win games.By the way croom is doing a great job pissing every one else in the conference off i guess msu gets an A+

I'm not convinced that the way for Black coaches to get more jobs is to force colleges and universities to interview someone because they have a certain skin color. If you force someone to hire a certain quantity versus a certain quality, well then, that's what you'll get. Quantity ahead of quality. Then again that may be all the BCA is interested in. God forbid someone get hired on merit alone.

I must respect the BCA's effort to diversify college coaching, but I think that assigning a letter grade "A" through "F", based on the schools' hiring decisions, is ludicrous. Colleges hire and fire coaches based on only two letter grades: "W" and "L". (I'll let you guess which one is passing, and which one is failing.)

I think all of these grade cards and surveys are stupid. I highly doubt that a black coach was not hired just because of the color of his skin. It's just trying to pull a Michigan and force affirmative action into every facet of life. Why don't these people go focus on some real issues, like getting a grip on reality and living in the real world.

This is the most stupidest thing that i have ever seen in my life. Why give south carolina a f just because we got a good coach. Most of the black people that are in that thing are just looking at things to say that we are segregating them again. I wish that they would just stop blaming everything on white people and start taking them blame for thing when it is really there problem. That is pretty much all i have to say to them in that association.

I am an all out gamecock fan and if they did do something bad then i would know. We already had coach spurrier in our sites when Lou holtz retired. Black people should not give us an F for getting a good coach at the program. It is not going against black peoples rights just that there was no black people that were better than Steve Spurrier at the time and i dont think there is still anybody better than coach Steve Spurrier.

BCA should not exist if they want equality in hiring. The very existance of such an organization is self segregation. Do we have a White Congressional Caucus, a White Miss America, or White Teachers of America? I recently saw a sports reporter wrote that ND had a double standard in firing Ty after only three years and extending Charlie to ten. Give me a break. Was Ty black before he was hired or only after?

I just came across this blog. I hope nobody else is on this blog, especially Brian. Brian is an idiot. The issue here is the BCA and its grading of schools hiring practices. Trying to take larger issue with this is outside of this website and also including all black people shows that you are probably racist. Black people should not give us an F? There are probably more than black people on the BCA. Think about things before you run off at the mouth (or fingers).

With all of the money involved with college football these days, I am sure without a doubt, that any university would hire "green" or "blue" people to coach their respective football teams - if they could just win the dayum games. I am also sure that they would hire Martians or Vulcans or Yoda himself - if that's what it would take to get a dayum win!

If Mississippi State was a real football school they would not have put up with Croom anymore past this year. They are the worst football team i have ever seen and it doesnt look like its getting much better. Yea he beat the Gators but that was luck. I have been ashamed for them to be in the SEC since they lossed Wayne Madkin and the D-FENCE. Which by the way was the best thing that ever happened to thier program. Even though they hated him while he was there. The cow college does have a few excuses. 1. Starkville SUCKS 2. Sherill screwed them the last few years 3. MSU fans are the most fair weathered fans in football. You should support your team thru thick and thin. Believe me im an Alabama fan! I hope and pray that our program and fans never stoop to the level MSU and their fans have.

Clearly, they are not only talking about head coaches. Even if they know who they want, it doesn't hurt to at least talk to and up and coming minority candidate. The NFL has a policy that at least one minority candidate must be interviewed before hiring a replacement. This has worked well for the league. Many teams found gems in what they had assumed would be just going through the motions. Not all great coaches have recognizable names. There have been very few black head caoches in Division I college football, so there's not exactly a big pool of legendary black head coaches. It never hurts to interview a relatively unknown coordinator. You'd think that with how big football coaching staffs are, most schools should have a qualified minority coach. I'm not saying hire this guy because he's black. What I'm saying is early on in the process, don't be afraid to include minority candidates with potential. The AD and head coach should have the final decision, but you'd like them to have the best field of candidates possible. I don't view this report as minorities whining that they don't automatically get jobs over white coaches. I don't think it's too much to ask for them to want an equal playing field. You would be either naive or just in denial if you thought the playing field was level. Legally, there is racial equality in America, but both institutional and social racial inequality not only still exist, but they play a large role in each of our daily lives. White males are the ones that typically do not realize that this is happening, mostly due to the fact that they benefit from it. I am a white male myself, but I have always been keenly aware of racial/ethic issues. Both college football and college basketball are largely "Good ol' Boys" clubs. It's not so much that they intentionally pass over minority candidates because of their skin color, but they are likely to be more familiar with a white candidate and are more comfortable with him. I'm a die hard Sam Houston State Bearkats student-fan but I definitely have to agree with the C grade. I'm not so sure that it should have even been that high. Of the 11 total coaching positions between basketball and football, only one of those coaches is a minority. Mike Salinas, the CB and Special Teams coach was only recently brought in (from West Texas A&M). He was the only new hire in football this year. I hope our AD will continue to consider minority coaches. When it comes down to it, I think that's all minority coaches really want. At least give one of them a chance to impress you in an interview. I understand the South Carolina being upset with the F they received, but you will sometimes get misleading F's in surveys with objective criteria such as this one. It should be noted that, although most of the Board of Directors are minorities, the Vice President is white. They also recentley voted on a name change between:
Diverse Coaches and Administrators (DCA)
Diverse Coaches and Administrators Association (DCAA)
Or another name recommended by a memberHerkyHornet said:

Who cares!? Why do there have to be so many of one minority involved in anything. Im tired of this reverse racism crap. People wonder why white people are so defensive and protective around so called minorities, then something like this happens. America is not a melting pot, it is not a place for illegal immigrants, it is a place with a government established by the people who settled the land who happened to be white the last time around. Where are the all white schools, the white entertainment television? They dont exist why? Because that would be racist and supposedly socially distasteful. There shouldnt be a black coaches association, there should just be a coaches association. 40 acres and a mule, shove it up your ass. Life isnt fair but it should be bearable. Whether or not a black guy was overlooked for being black I dont know, but what if a white coach with more experience and is just a better candidate gets passed up to hire a black guy. This is very troublesome, this invites the notion of race quotas to keep things "fair" which would without a doubt be terrible for college football. Im not a racist, GO HORNETS!!!

It's getting old constantly hearing about the percentage in relationship of black coaches to black athletes. Look in the stands whether football or basketball, college or pro; what is the ratio of black attendees to black athletes. No one hears any complaints either of the percentage of black athletic scholarships. It's simple, you select the best prospect no matter the skin color.
