Cotton Bowl unveils $50 million renovation plan
The Cotton Bowl and the City of Dallas unveiled plans to renovate the 75-year old Cotton Bowl Stadium. The plan would include upgrade seats, concession stands, scoreboards and restrooms, in addition to increasing the capacity to over 92,000 seats.
The renovations won't start at all, however, unless Texas and Oklahoma agree to a long-term extension to keep their annual game in Dallas.
Right now, the Cotton Bowl is only used for the AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic, the Texas-OU game, and the Prairie View-Grambling game. Dallas has also approached Texas Tech & Texas A&M about playing their annual game in Dallas.

I kinda like the idea of having that game at the Cotton Bowl every year. The idea of driving to to Dallas every year is a lot more palpable than driving to Lubbock or College Station every other year. What about doing it every other year in Dallas and make it a home/Dallas/home series? I bet they could easily fill up 96,000 seats.

This situation is very similar to the decision made by Alabama and Auburn to discontinue playing the Iron Bowl game at Legion Field in Birmingham. It is very hard to justify major renovations for a decaying stadium in a bad part of town. I don't see the two AD's (Dodds-UT and Castiglione-OU) signing any type of agreement with the city of Dallas when their respective schools have spent millions to upgrade their own on-campus stadiums. I expect the Red River Shootout to be a home-and-home event once the agreement expires.

Anybody that has ever been to the red river shootout knows that the cotton bowl is the only place that UT and OU should ever play each other. That said, the cotton bowl needs to be renovated. It is so old and small that I could understand why the game is moved. If the Tech vs. A&M game is moved there that would take away from the UT OU rivalry. They should stay with their home away games, that rivalry isnt one ounce of what the red river shoot out is.

The rivalry is not to level of UT/Oklahoma, or even Prairie View/Grambling for that matter. A midseason bowl game for the Aggies and Red Raiders is not what college football is supposed to be about. I'm all for renovating the stadium but would rather see a pac-10 vs ACC/SEC game played their as a nuetral venue. There have been times that UT would have rather had the Sooners at home in Austin and likewise for the Sooners. Sometimes homefield advantage needs to be a part of the game and especially when it's a conference game. It made since for UT and Oklahoma to play in Dallas when there was a SWC and Big 8 matchup. Now that the teams are in the same conference the rivalry is still there, but it just isn't the same. I see no need to make the A&M/Tech game something it is not.
