Ohio State does appear to be head & shoulders above the rest. They did have a lot of help from Drew Tate and the INT's.At the same time though,Ohio State's defense capitalized on the mistakes. It's a double-edged sword. It's also a sign of very good defensive play.Ohio State is the #1 team in the land.No doubt.T-Mac

Who says just because Ohio State started out preseason #1 they get to stay there? Here is the way I see it:
    1.Michigan
    2.Florida
    3.Ohio State
    4.SC
    5.W VA
    6.Auburn
    7.LSU
    8.Oregon
    9.Tennessee
    10.Texas
    11.Louisville
    12.GA Tech
    13.California
    14.Georgia
    15.Clemson.
Damn, looking at my top 15, two things pop out at me. I think I like the PAC more than I thought I did and the DAWGS have 4 big time games left, TN, FLA, AU, GA TECH. 2 between the hedges, 1 at the cocktail party, 1 at the plains. GO DAWGS!!!

Can we just rename this the JOKERS poll instead of the Coaches Poll. How could Virginia Tech be ranked ahead of Georgia Tech? The Real TECH.

Let's see, strength of schedule. GT has played 2 teams in the top 11. VT has played 0 teams in the top 20. GT is 4 and 1, VT is 4 and 1, GT kicked VTs behind in their own stadium. Head to head is just ridicolous.

What are they basing the ratings on? Gold and White is also way more attractive than Maroon and Orange.

Anybody out there got a clue as to what these guys are smoking?

I agree with the Yellowjacket fan.You beat somebody and they are ranked above you. These polls really dont mean much, except that the Ga Bulldogs are way overated #10 Give me a break the 9 game losing streak CU Buffs showed the world who the Ga Dogs are, and the Ole Miss Rebels reconfirmed it.The dogs will lose against the Ga Tech Yellowjackets after a couple of SEC losses.

How can you put USC,Michigan, and WV ahead of Auburn. Only Michigan has played a top ten team(an highly overratted ND) and USC has only played one top 25 team in a weak Neb that almost lost to a pathetic K state. WV looks like a really good team right now but you can't drop a team that hasn't lost.

Some Bones for the SEC faithful:

After compiling some interesting facts between 1960 and 2006 - I have confirmed what the SEC have stated.

I have compared the Top Six programs from the SEC and the Top Five from the Pac-10 over that time period. I don't have to break down all of the numbers. But, the SEC comes out ahead on this score.

And, the criteria was: how well did each team play against their own conference compared to that of all of the other "Major Conferences" or OOC competition. The SEC actually had a "higher" winning percentage outside of their own conference. The Pac-10 actually had a "lower" winning percentage outside of their own conference. That means that within the SEC is a harder conference to play in than the Pac-10 is.

Even though the Pac-10 had more parity (more teams with higher winning percentages) - the SEC still won more OOC games at a higher percentage than the Pac-10 did. Over forty-five years of games - there really isn't any argument to be made as to anything really. The SOS would have eventually balanced out for everyone - especially counting all the Bowl games that were included.

And, this pattern held true for every decade. Now, I'm am quite sure that that gap is closing between 2000 and 2006. Every statistic I have looked at indicates that is a fact. But, historically speaking, the SEC has in fact been a much stronger conference than the Pac-10 has been. But, hey, let's try and look at what is really happening today.

Are you sure you want to look at what is happening today? The PAC still comes up short on the head to head games:USC over Ark, AU over WSU, TN over CAL, LSU over Arizona. Is 2006 the "today" you are referring to? Now if TN jumps on GA this weekend like they did CAL, I will leave the PAC-SEC thing alone. Tennessee has looked good right? Wait until you see them Saturday. Cutcliffe used to own UGA. He better be ready for the dynamic duo at defensive ends, Moses and Grant. GO DAWGS!!

Notes: Sorry WVU, 3 words, strength of schedule, you'll have to semi-convince the nation against Louisville; (National Championship)Michigan vs Ohio State, #1 and #2 in the land, both undefeated! Couldnt get any better, Lets all hope for this one. Close as always, Michigan prevails this year, 24-20.

    GA Boy:

I've already stated that it looks as though the SEC is gonna have a good year. They have a great start going. We'll know alot more when Bowl season rolls around. Hope the Dawgs play well. But, I was referring to what has been happening in this decade (2000-2006). The Pac-10 has been gaining ground overall. Not this year though! And, your right, the big win was Tennessee over Cal. That was about the only level game we had - and Tennessee made em' look silly. And, I'm glad. I hate Cal so I could care less. I'm glad Tennessee rolled them up. I hope every team rolls em' up. I'm definately hopin' that Oregon destroys them this weekend. I don't care for Tedford as the coach and Cal has been an embarassment for the Pac-10 whenever it comes to a "Big Game". So, we have no disagreement here.

I just read an article on ESPN that said Tommie Tuberville wants a playoff system because he believes it's the only way for an SEC school to get a shot at the National Championship. What Tuberville doesn't understand is that their is a way that he can become a National Champion without having a playoff system, and here's how...
According to the polls...in the US Today and Harris polls: #1 OSU, #2 USC, #3 Auburn. But in the AP poll: #1 OSU, #2 Auburn, #3 USC.
Now, using 2003 as my example, if OSU plays USC in the championship game and USC wins, then Auburn can claim themselves as National Champs because of their ranking in the AP poll. It apparently doesn't matter that the BCS is THE OFFICIAL system of the NCAA; if you think you're the champ then you can just say so and everyone will love you and say your the champion, to hell with those BCS guys.
But then again, USC did beat Arkansas this year, so they should've just handed them the trophy after the game.

Gatorhippy - the 2003 MNC Champion---USC. And everyone always mentions their name as the '03 "Co-Champs". Which in my book, if you want to be a Champion, get the crystal ball.

However, I do have a correction to my previous post. I said that Auburn could declare themselves National Champs due to their AP rankings if USC were to win, BUT...being that its USC, everyone would just forget that the AP even exists and say that USC is the Champion because they won the BCS Championship game. Then they would cry like little babies and say that their not "sharing" their championship.

Hey SEC#1 Not only are playoffs needed. We also need to look at these so-called conference Championship games. In most leagues like Big XII it is totally unessassary.Either do away with them altogether or every league should have to play one.The Pac-10 and Big 10 do not have to play these. Its not fair to the other conferences.
Also look at these Bye Weeks USC gets two early in the season.Whats up with that? Texas plays two of its toughest opponents early in the season without bye weeks.
The nature of college football is so competitive that We should all have the same advantages or disadvantages.

The decision makers won't go to a playoff because there would be too many games. I give a couple of years before they add a 13th game and still say there are too many for a playoff.

Hey Tomcat, I totally agree with you on all points made. You have LSU vs. Auburn in week 3, Texas vs. Ohio State in week 2, and several other very notable games taking place early in the season, while USC takes a bye in week 2. Then the losers of those games are penalized while USC remains ranked in the top 3 without proving anything. They need to show some marbles and schedule some top 10 opponents, because beating Nebraska isn't quite enough. However, going to the wire with Washington State does say something. And don't even get started with the PAC 10 not having a conference championship, while every other leagues' elite have to slug it out to decide which bowl they'll get. Then again, with the cupcakes they have in the PAC 10, would it even matter if they had conference championship?

  25. Tommie Trojan said:

    Tomcat:

Some of these people are just so strange. What about when they get the "bye" later on and USC doesn't? What about that? Come on! You people should all want a crack at USC. Texas got their chance and actually won the game. What's everybody else so shook up about? It's not USC's fault that Nebraska has to fall out of the Top Ten in the last few years. It's not their fault that Notre Dame can't hold it up. It's not their fault that Washington, Oregon and California can't get to and stay in the Top Ten. Hey, y'all just wait yer turn. You'll get it. All y'all got to do is just keep winning your games and quit worrying about what USC is doing. Right now - all the computer models have USC as having played the toughest schedule so far. So, get off that. It seems as if there is a whole lot of other schools playing the "Big Time Cupcake Schedules".
Now, as for the conference playoffs - they are totally out of line. I don't agree with that at all. It's very unfair for some team that lost the conference race to get one more chance "to get lucky" right before BCS invites. It's pure BS!

    Tommie T,

Thanks for that research. I am making a stick-it note of this post # and title so I can reference to Socal if he ever starts going off on his ridiculous nonreferenced stat rants. Even though I know he will come back and say,"Homefield advantage, road pus___s, blah, blah."

Okay back to the subject...SEC #1 and Tomcat, I agree completly. Ever since I saw the Coaches poll give the #2 spot to a bye week USC team, I lost a lot of respect for that poll. I hardly even watse my time looking at it now. Especially when you note AU's 5-0 against tougher opponents than a 4-0 USC. Even though I think eventually USC will drop out of the top 5 and quite possibly top 10 this season, I would still give them at least the #3 spot, right behind the deserving AU. The AP is right this time. Michigan is making it's way up there and is the best #6 team I think the poll has ever seen. I like them at #4.
    This is the Mooka Poll:
    1 Ohio St
    2 Auburn
    3 Michigan
    4 USC
    5 WVU
    6 Florida Gators
    7 LSU

    So Cal USMC:

My man, your makin' me laugh! You got Ohio State and Michigan #1 and #2. Dude! Let me fill you in on the facts.

USC has currently won 9 of the last 10 meetings between themselves and these two schools. Since 1960: USC has won 5 of 6 from Michigan and 7 of 11 from Ohio State. USC has currently won 6 of the last 7 meetings from Big Ten Schools. Between 1966 and 1986 - USC won an astounding 29 of 31 games from Big Ten competition. Since 1960: use owns the Big Ten to the tune of 45-15-1.

Now, these statistics include all USC teams from 1960 until today. There were even some bad years in there. Now, this team has won 49 of the last 51 against all comers. Could this not be the greatest period of USC's long successful tradition? If it's even close - what in the world could possibly make you think that either one of these two teams that USC owns (Ohio State and Michigan) - could possibly beat them in this day and age when neither Woody Hayes not Bo Schembechler could garner much success?

WVU does not get the credit they deserve. They single handedly took out the SEC's best team last year and people are saying they do not have a tough schedule this year. That is BS! Big East is stronger this year than the ACC is.

Man, You gotta give USC it's props. My only concern is a repeat of what happened in 03 and 04, with OU. I'm sure you all remember USC got screwed out of the big game one year be/c of what OU has accomplished a couple of years ago. Everybody knew USC was the more qualified team for the NC. They had the heart for it that year too. Next year, same thing, only with AU. AU got screwed be/c of what OU accomplished a couple years before, and we all knew AU was the more qualified team with the heart for it that year. This USC team is the mirror image of OU in 03 and 04. Are they good? Absolutely. Are they the best? Close, but no. This is not a bold statement, this is only the obvious. IF USC were to go to the NC even as an undefeated team, they would get demolished just like OU in 03 and 04. When will we learn?

    WE NEED PLAYOFFS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The games are played on the feild and it just depends on who shows up Saturday. The mental attitude and execution of plays.
Post #30 Ga Boy youve got to pull for your team they have the Vols at home, I like your Wash pick.
Check this out sometimes teams with 4 or 5
losses go to BCS example FSU 05
Sometimes teams with 1 or 2 losses dont make it.
Conference Championships are really about the money and usually dont determine the champ.
For example one year Texas beat K-State and Oklahoma beat Texas then K-State beat OU
K-State were the Champs a team that UT beat during regular season.
Same thing has happened were UT beat A&M lost to OU then A&M beat OU. A&M goes to BCS a Team Texas Beat
Sometimes you have to face the same opponent twice like AU vs Tenn or UT vs CU The advantage is in the favor of the team that lost during regular season and the victors should never have to face the same team twice.
Buckeye Mark in other words you would have to beat someone twice to earn your spot.
Tommie T Same goes for yall
Perhaps all conferences should have the same number of teams 10,12,14 whatever and the same number of Bye weeks Hookem-Horns

    Tommy T,
You got a warped sense of what goes into the Rankings. You do know Im talking about the Rankings after Week 5 of The 2006! Season, right?
Is this the real Tommie Trojan? That is some loopy criteria you brought up.

Now how about looking at what the teams have done THIS YEAR... the Top 5 teams and who they beat (simplisticly):

OHIO ST - Iowa 4-1, Texas 4-1, Penn St 3-2, No Ill 3-2, Cincy 2-3
    MICHIGAN - Notre Dame 4-1, Wiscy 4-1, Minn 2-3, Vandy 2-3, C Mich 2-3
    FLORIDA - Tenn 4-1, So Miss 3-1*, Bama 3-2, Kentucky 3-2, UCF 1-3
    USC - Nebraska 4-1, Arkansas 3-1, Wazzu 3-2, Arizona 2-3
    AUBURN - LSU 4-1, Wazzu 3-2, SoCarol 3-2, Buffalo 1-3, Miss St 1-4

I'd be fine to place those 4 team, other than Ohio St, in One Tier; all in one "grouping" as opposed to having break it down to 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th (but it would have to be done as some point in the season).

The Rankings are NOT about which team you "think" could beat which other team! Its about what a team has DONE. And its not about scoring margin, or the amount of NFL prospects on a team, or any other B.S. - especially not comparing the past heads-up records of teams! You say I make YOU laugh ???!!! Wow.

    So Cal USMC:

What's wrong with your logic? Your the one always talkin' about who beat who? Well, who is who in the zoo? Why is Ohio State # 1? Who'd they beat? Who says Texas and Iowa are good? Have they beat any good teams? Has Michigan beat a good team? Is Notre Dame a good team? Have they beaten any good teams? Georgia Tech in a squeeker? I'm talking about elite Top Five material. It's all hypothetical anyway. I'm pointing out that the Big Ten is another conference that has had it totally handed to them for a long period of time by USC. There were many # 1 ranked undefeated Ohio State and Michigan teams fall by the wayside here. And, it definately will happen again if they have to play USC in a BCS Bowl game. I am not impressed with Troy Smith. Sorry! Don't think Ted Ginn all of a sudden got better than either of USC's receivers either. What's the big tadoo? They got Pittman? What do they really got? I just don't understand. Is Iowa the litmus test? Who are they? Who is Texas this year? We don't even really know. We'll know more after this weekend.

    Tomcat,
Rice, North Texas, and NON-Division 1A Sam Houston St... by my count thats a total of THREE (3) "BYE" WEEKS for Texas already.

I didnt follow this entire line-of-discussion here (its about Playoffs???), but the Conf Champ Games are not Forced upon any conference... this business about "its not fair" is koo-key. Its their own "fault" if you wanna put it that way. They do it for Revenue. The PAC, just this year now that the NCAA expanded the schedules to 12 Games, went to NINE (9) Conference Games as opposed to 8 like the other rest of the Confs!!! The PAC isnt gonna "get to" pad their Records "extra" by scheduling teams like Citadel, Buffalo, Utah St, and Rice for that added 12th Game! Is that "fair"? That was also done for Revenue purposes. Should I be saying, thats not fair... How about those other Confs play NINE conference games like the PAC does (now)... the Conf Champ Game's are Meaningless anyway (at best theyre redundent, often times theyre just a Joke)?

And straighten out this turd, SEC#Waaa, for me Tomcat... He thinks the NCAA officially recognized a National Champ, the tw!t.

    TMac, Tomcat,

That added Conference Champ Game also HELPS those teams that happen to Win. In theory, hopefully, its the "two best teams" in a conference facing off... in theory, they're both gonna be quality teams, so who cares who Wins? Whichever team that does Win is gonna get that extra "credit" for that Additional Game -- thats extra credit that a Conf Champ from the PAC or BigTEN Wont Get!

So from the perspective of an INDIVIDUAL TEAM it may be less "fair" for those teams in a Conf with a Conf-Champ-game... But from the perspective of the Conferences, its concieveably less "fair" for the conferences withOUT Conf-Champ-games in terms of pumping up teams' SOS rating.

I like the idea of a conference championship game only if there are two teams tied for first, and they have not faced each other earlier in the season. I do not like the idea of two teams facing each other a second time. (like Buckeye Mark said,I would also hate to play that school way down in Ohio, twice in one season)
As far as the Big Ten,Pac Ten and Big East not having conf. champ. game, they do not have as many teams so normaly you do not have the problem of two teams that have not played each other tied for first. No reason to play a conference championship game.
What I like about college football is it's not like the NFL,and if you make it more like the NFL then college football will be ruined.

SO CAL: Don't give up on the Auburn vs. USC matchup by the end of the season, USC is doing the same thing Auburn has done the past few weeks, we started playing like we were worn out vs. south carolina and LSU and it payed off and we got beat by arkansas. USC has looked worn vs. wash. and wash. st. Auburn now needs to win out, and 2 SEC teams have to beat arkansas(LSU and Tennessee) for auburn to go the SEC championship game. Ohio State needs to lose to Michigan, Rutgers will beat louisville, and louisville will beat West Virginia, We will beat Florida, Notre Dame or Cal will beat USC and then our national title hopes still remain.
