StubHub ranks top football rivalries
In a capitalist society, no one knows can define value better than the market, right? (Or something like that.) StubHub, the ticket website, has been tracking demand for NCAA rivalry games among buyers and ranks the top 25 football rivalries by ticket demand:
1. Notre Dame Fighting Irish at USC Trojans
2. Michigan Wolverines at Ohio State Buckeyes
3. Oklahoma vs. Texas (Red River Shootout)
4. Michigan State Spartans at Michigan Wolverines
5. Purdue Boilermakers at Notre Dame Fighting Irish
6. Auburn Tigers at Alabama Crimson Tide
7. USC Trojans at UCLA Bruins
8. Florida State Seminoles at Miami Hurricanes
9. Florida Gators vs. Georgia Bulldogs
10. Texas A&M Aggies at Texas Longhorns
Check here for the complete list (including average ticket price) or visit Stubhub.com.

I will admit, much as I am perennially sick of hearing about Michigan-Ohio State, that for once a semi-objective, semi-scientific method can potentially be used to determine the comparative strength of rivalries.
Everyone is going to list their favorite school and their biggest rival as the 'best rivalry in sports', so these debates are hardly ever scientific.
The scale does seem to have holes:
It doesn't seem to account for regional cost-of-living adjustments, or stadium capacity. It's nice to know someone is trying though :)

Are you kidding me? How can you not even have South Carolina and Clemson on the list? Granted, after 103 games (not including this season) Clemson has the edge at 63-36-4, but can you deny a rivalry as old and storied as this one? It's had its ups and downs, its excitements, and even a breakdown leading to a vicious brawl. What more could you possibly ask for...also, I believe that it is the third or fourth longest as far as consecutive games.

Purdue Boilermakers at Notre Dame Fighting Irish? In the top 5? Obviously, these people have never been to the state of Alabama. Auburn Alabama game is a 365 day a year topic in the state of Alabama. Both teams could go 0-12 coming into the Iron bowl (Not likely) and the game would still be a sell out at either location. This is the only game that really matters in the season to the state of Alabama.

if you want to talk about purely ticket demand look at the WVU vs. Pitt rivalry. it has always been sold out and is usually sold out over a year in advance due to the fact that the schools are only 60 min apart from each other so you get both schools at every game. personaly i think the best rivalries are local ones where both teams will be on hand. (USC vs UCLA, any florid team)

Numbers are based on ticket demand at Stub Hub. If there is big demand somewhere else, that doesn't get factored in.
Do fans in every area of the country buy from Stub Hub? Does Stub Hub advertise (generate demand) in all areas of the country?

All they play is one song and I really have not even heard it the last couple of time you have played the Buckeyes. Wake up FOOL!!! SCu.m. aint got a shot. No team in college football could handle this Buckeye squad. Go Buck!! SCu.m. SUCKS!!!!

Gatorhippy.....I understood that this was about a demand for tickets, but you need to check the stats because the Clemson-Carolina game has been a sellout almost since the beginning of the series. Before Spurrier, the SEC Championship wasn't even as important as winning that game for South Carolina fans. I imagine there was a very similar mentality around Clemson as well. I don't know where Stubhub got there stats from or how far back they went in the years.....but there seems to be a bias as there always has been whenever you mention the South Carolina teams.

Debating rivalries by ticket demand is stupid. Ticket demand does not take into account the name calling, the vandalism, the visciousness and the pure hatred that fans show to the hated teams fan base. The Roll Tide redneck watching the Auburn/Alabama game in his trailer lives and dies with each play just like the season ticket holder does.

So, we've evolved from the "premier" programs in recent history to the greatest rivals. As a Mountaineer, I'm partial to the "Backyard Brawl" (Pitt & WVU). I was partial to VA Tech & WVU, till Tech booked to the ACC. Now, it appears Louisville has taken their place.
All bias aside, I travel back to a time when, as a kid, I didn't know what college I was going to. Back then, though raised in up-state NY, the rivalries I remember having been most haled across the air-waves were AK/NE, OK/TX, AL/Auburn, MI/OSU, and everybody was after Notre Dame, except TX. There were two rivalries, however, that seemed to demand even more attention: UCLA/USC, and Army/Navy. There was almost as much hoopla and pageantry at the Army/Navy game as there was with the Rose Bowl.
Some of these rivalries have come and gone. Some still exist, but have lost their luster. (I didn't see anyone mention Harvard/Yale, have long been dubbed "The Game".) Many a new exiting rivalry has emerged. It's great for all of college football; both players and fans alike wait for that one special game every year. I look forward to rivalries involving WVU. But, I'll always have a place in my heart for the Army/Navy game.

No matt i think Florida is overrated not Clemson or Carolina, and to the fans in this state the rivalry does mean something. The facist Florida regime in college football is going down, like Miami and Florida State. Don't lash out at South Carolina and Clemson, because we stole Steve Spurrier, and CJ Spiller away from you. You will see soon times are changing and powers are shifting, these two South Carolina teams will continually gain better and better recruiting classes as the years go on; the floridian Dynasties are coming to an end Has-beens.

The way that these rankings were set was based over time not just this year. So as I am one of the biggest Michigan fans you will find, I can accept that the ND/USC rivalry might be a little stronger. This year there is no way that the ND/USC game will get more hype than Mich/Ohio State. That might be the game of the century.
Side note - ND gets no respect from me until they join a conference!

Garry, after the NFL steve spurrier tried to come back to Florida but WE rejected him. Anyway Ubran meyer has the same record at Florida that Spurrier had back when he started here. UF had the number 2 recruiting class this past year, I don't think that "the floridian dynasties are coming to an end."

r u serious M GO BLUE? you think the mishitgan D can stop the OSU offense? why? becuase you can shut down the run? thats ok, (who have you played with a desent run attack by the way?) OSU will pass all day on you hacks. what are you guys ranked in pass defense? or overall defense? behind OSU way behind. OSU way out ranks mishitgan in scoring, pass, and over all defense. so keep acting like your non-tested D will be the decieding factor. even if you do get preasure on Troy Smith you wont bring him down the majority of the time he's elusive and will just make big play after big play. To many weapons all around. On top of that how exactly do you think mishitgan will put points on the board against a D thats better than your own???????????

Terdzoo22,This is all I have to say!
"They (Michigan) were pretty tough. They were without a doubt the best defense we've played all year. How physical they are, their size, their speed -- we haven't seen anything like that."
-- Iowa quarterback Drew Tate.
.....Iowa had played Ohio State before they played Michigan.
Even Drew Tate knows Michigan has a better D!

MgobithboyBlue,
It doesn't matter what drew Tate THINKS or SAYS I didn't use someone's opinion to back up what I said I used stats. The numbers don't lie. But I would expect the concept of statistics to be over your head anyways, being a Michigan fan and all. If you want to use Iowa as a comparison to gauge the strength of Ohio St. and Michigan you have to actually site things from the game give me some numbers. If you compare both box scores the numbers are about the same on the defensive side of the ball. You held them to 50 less yards rushing but Tate ended up with a better completion percentage against the Michigan D. So let's say your right maybe the Michigan D is a smudge better (we could argue that all day) even so you didn’t answer my question from before. How do you expect to score on a defense that's almost if not better than your own???? Your offense doesn’t stack up it struggled to score against Iowa. Since you want to use Iowa to compare answer this question for me (on top of the other one you forgot). Based on the Iowa game whose offense looks better?

Luke, Ryan, Nick: I didn't forget FL/FSU. Nor did I forget MI/MI St, MS/MS St, IA/IA St, KS/KS St, nor a plethora of other very real and very serious rivalries. For some reason unknown to me, these rivalries don't get the notoriety that some of the others do. Even MN/WI, for Paul Bunyan’s Axe, didn't seem all that special this year.
Terrzo22: In the words of an Italian far more famous than I am, "Not so fast, my friend!" In a game like this statistics don't matter. Throw em out!!! Now, I'm no Big 10 fan, but consider this. MI is allowing

Nothing!
And to terzo22-You need help with your spelling of M.I.C.H.I.G.A.N.
Yes,the Ohio State offense has looked much better than Michigans! But half of Michigans offense was supermario Manningham, who missed the Penn State and the Iowa game. And there is a slightly SEVERE diff in the coaching!
Tressel will not let them back into the game.......At Michigan it's defend our 1 point lead!

Obviously somebody doesn't want me to mention the fact that MI allows opponents to score just under 13 pts/game, while OSU allows opponents to score barely over 8 pts/game. This statistic is much more important, given it impacts the bottom line: the final score. That's what ultimately decides the winner. Sorry M GO BLUE; it had to come out sooner or later. (Actually, I think the "less than" symbol screwed me.)

Final Rankings of rivalry games (In my opinion derived from personal experience).
1.Alabama vs. Auburn
1.Michigan vs. Ohis State (tie)
2.Oklahoma vs. Texas
3.Florida vs. Florida St.
4.USC vs. Notre Dame
These are the only truly serious rivalries there are that are talked about all season. I might give the Iron Bowl a slight edge over Mich. v. OSU just for the reason that in the state of Alabama, it is split 50/50 and every day all year long trash talking goes on about Alabama and Auburn among Co-Workers, Classmates, Family, Friends, Spouses. Nothing can be compared to the passion of football fans in Alabama. It is life. That is why you see more bloggers on this website that are either fans of Alabama or Auburn. The only other rivalry place ive lived in is the state of Florida. Sorry guys but from personal experience, the FSU vs. Miami and the FSU vs. Florida arent taken near as seriously as the Iron Bowl is.
Ive never been to Michigan or Ohio so i cannot say anything about how serious they take it but im sure its tied for the biggest rivalry. The Red River Shootout im sure is really good too but USC vs. Notre Dame????Pac-10 has no passion among the fans and because of the distance between the two teams, im sure its not as big as some other rivalries. Just the rich folks from Southern Cal will pay an ungodly ammount for a ticket.

I like Missouri & Kansas. It is the second most played rivalry in Division 1-A football. Along with ceremonies where groups of Alumni and fans have ceremonies the night before the game in Missouri where they burn the jayhawk of Kansas the two date back to a war. In the Civil War the two had some of the most famous battles. Thus, some could say the rivalry really dates back to the 1840's.

I had to laugh when I saw Michigan and Michigan State =) Michigan has beat them 8 of the last 10 and will most likely beat them 8 of the next 10 =)

If Michigan can get to 11-0 and ranked #2 That game will be HUGE! Winner to the NC! Loser to the Rose Bowl! GO BLUE! Remember Penn State!
