UNT must name practice center after fired coach

Talk about getting led around by the horns.

The University of North Texas has agreed to name the school's new practice facility after fired Head Coach Darrell Dickey.

Why? Because on of their biggest boosters, "Mattress Mac", was so upset over the firing of the UNT's coach that threatened to reallocate a one million dollar donation from the athletic department to the music department.

UNT also agreed to pay out Dickey's contract, which was to run through 2009, to the tune of $560,000.

Isn't college football wonderful! A player can't accept preferential treatment from a Booster, much less a million dollars. But the universities athletic departments are more than willing to succomb to a Booster's wishes in exchange for a million dollars. Do as we say, not as we do! We are quick to point the finger at players who receive special benefits, but isn't it the way the world around them works?

    Fanofthegame,

you are so right. I knew all conference players that could not afford to go anywhere during the breaks and only ate at the cafeteria yet you would see 1,000's of their jerseys in the stands on Saturday. It was pitiful. I think college players should be paid a reasonable amount of money. Maybe $25k a year or something. A lot of these guys are from poor families and the money provided by scholorships are not realistic at all. I graduated in 2001 and was receiving $541 a month living off campus. Who could live on $541 a month?

volstrike3, I think 25k is a bit much. Most college students don't make 25k a year while in school. I think half of that would be fair, and be comparable to what they could make at a well paying part time job. (Then the NCAA should limit athletic department spending and require the balance to be used to reduce the cost of a college education across the board.)
