Al Gore hates your football team

Does your school's stadium have artificial turf? If so, then it's a fair bet that Al Gore hates your team, since artificial turf contributes to global warming.

Stuart Gaffin, an atmospheric scientist whose focus is excess heat in urban areas and storm-water runoff, said synthetic turf poses problems on both scores.

Last summer, as part of a study of heat radiation in New York City, Gaffin found the temperature above artificial turf fields measured at 140 to 160 degrees Fahrenheit, creating what he described as "heat islands."

And don't even get him started on all the lawn mowing crews that artificial turf has put out of business!!

So, your team better prepare for the wrath of the Goracle!!!

You hear that, Texas Tech? You listening, Georgia Tech? What about you, Michigan? (Actually, I can't fault UM because... let's face it - it's cold as hell up there during football season.)

Every one of you artificial turf schools are evil - so sayeth the Gore! Except for you Boise State - you scare the bejeesus out of Al Gore.

He is just an expendable pawn for an operation by the global financial oligarchy, centered in London, (Gore's hedge fund is in London, he has been officially hired by the British government as of October 30, 2006). Far be it from me to say ANYTHING in defense of Al Gore, but, I think its somewhat of a stretch to tie the linked articles in this thread to Gore. I understand that Kev was begin a bit tongue-in-cheek with the whole Gore reference, but I'll give the guy some slack where its due. And he hasn't, to my knowledge, come out and specifically addressed the issue of artifical turf in sports arenas...........yet.

Tomcat: Leave it to you to get a Long Horns plug-in, even in regards to an article involving politics, of all things.

By the way, welcome back, Kevin. We were all wondering what happened to you, given you closed all of the response windows, until now.

As for politics and sports, it's a mixed review. On one hand (for example), politics has given women, and rightfully so, equal opportunity to excel in sports. On the other hand, this law/policy has forced the hands of some AD's, resulting in their having to cancel given sports in order to even things out. In some cases, said policy has been used as an excuse. Case-in-point: WVU A.D., Ed Pastilong, elected to cancel men's tennis, men's track & field, and the rifle team (co-ed). Bad enough men's tennis was dumped. But, dumping Men's Track & Field (in the state which houses the Track & Field Hall-Of-Fame), and Rifle (including all 13 national championships that went with it) was a travesty. The good news: A year after disbanding the team, politics got into the act. The State of WV decided to supplement WVU's budget with sufficient funds to keep the rifle team. The bad news: The rifle team's been recovering ever since. Here’s the best part. Mr. Pastilong claimed this was done to help erase a $600,000.00/yr deficit. Yet, he managed to find $750,000.00/yr additional, in an attempt to lure Bobby Huggins from Cincinnati. While politics has been known to save some organizations, including those associated with sports, in my opinion, it tends to do more harm than good.

Now, for a subject I didn’t get the chance to respond to: Recruiting. Who got the best over-all recruiting class? Who got the most 5-Star recruits? Who got the best class to suit their immediate needs? Who the, ahem, cares!?! Obviously, those fans who’s team is said to have fared extremely well, as stated by the best-football-expert-guru-pundit-think-tank publication, give a flying fig. As for the rest…

Here’s what I’d like to know. Which schools out there have put together consistently successful football programs with less? Consider teams like AL-Birmingham, BYU, Cincinnati, E-Carolina, Marshall, S-FL, and UConn, just to name a few. ALB has had a reputation of being the team nobody wants to play, because they don’t come away with easy wins. BYU has not only been a successful program, they won a National Championship. Cincinnati has been a consistently competitive team, winning 6-8 games most years including mild upsets and near major upsets. ECU once had respectable success (under Logan when he coached), and now appears to be approaching that level again. Marshall practically took over the MAC when it transitioned to Div-1. In 10 years S-FL has gone from no football to back-to-back bowl games. UConn has also done well for a team only recently joining the Div-1 ranks. My question here is, “Where are all the 4 & 5 star recruits in these programs?” You could ask the same question about teams like BC, KY, MO, Louisville, OR,VA Tech, and my all time favorite, WVU. (I could have mentioned more, but you get the picture.)

The point is this. It doesn’t matter how many “blue chippers” you have. They’re not all going to be successful. Only those who are less selfish, have outstanding maturity and good work ethic, are coached well, not to mention have outstanding athletic ability, are those who’ll persevere and be successful. These kids you read about who’re charismatic, who know how to play the system and their coaches; they’re the exception, not the rule. The vast majority of blue chip players don’t make it. Why? They’re kids, 17-19 years young, immature, and inexperienced; who have no concept of what it is or what it takes to transition from high school to Div-1 football. What starts as an adventure to some, eventually turns into a pressure cooking nightmare. I’d be very interested in knowing how many kids are out there, originally regarded as 4 or 5 Star recruits, have done no better than special teams, 3rd string, transferred to Div-2 or dropped football completely. What attracts most of the best recruits to the best schools? The promise of success and dynamite coaching. Sadly, the best coaching and counciling is not enough to make solid players out of them all. Even the glitter and glamour associated with college football is not enough to keep them with the team of their original choice. If the kid isn't mentally tough, he's not going to be successful.

Kevin: Thankth, dad, I took thome deep breathth; I'm feeling much better now. Scentifically speaking, the "hot-spot" crap is all of that and more. Reflected heat disipates quickly, lends to cooling; as opposed to absorbed heat which dispates slowly, lends to warming. Not that Gore would ever take our advice, but if he's going to preach the science, he should learn it 1st.

@So Cal Athlete - You may be right, bro. Actually, the Gore stuff was all tongue-in-cheek. As best I know, Gore isn't involved in any of this - just my attempt at "clever".

Kevin, even though it might have been tongue-in-cheek, I think anything relating to the field surface of a football field has relevance as a thread topic. Especially on here. This is Football Fanblogs. Me personally, I couldn't care less if they did away with all artificial turf and went with grass. That being said, I think it is a relevant thread topic and a funny one as well. Me and So Cal have agreed on many things and we've disagreed on many things, but he needs to understand that you are an author on here. I would much rather discuss artificial turf versus grass anyday than what we were talking about when you were gone. People need to realize that this is the slowest time of year in CFB and finding thread topics probably isn't the easiest thing right now. If people are unhappy with the thread topics they are free to move on to another blog. This is the best one I've found. Keep up the good work Kevin. Hell, at least we aren't still on here babbling about what defines a sport and what doesn't.

P.S. Kevin, if people are unhappy with thread topics and want to give feedback that's great. Post 14 wasn't helpful, it was critical. If anybody has anything better for Kevin to post as a thread topic than let him know. Don't just criticize. Plain and Simple!

Kevin/T-Mac: I have to agree with post 14; this is a silly topic. It’s not the sort of thing that 1st comes to mind when asked about college football, or any sport for that matter. On the other hand, I had not heard of this, nor have I seen the original article, and am amazed that a man in his (Gore) position would take such as position as to further his idiocy. So, I was just as glad to have to opportunity to take part and respond.

That having been said, there are a couple of topics I brought up in the body of my usual long windedness (See post #8.), which you may consider for future topics of discussion. Otherwise, keep those cards and letters coming.

As for critiquing the feedback, while some of us tend to take the insult road a bit far, we’ve all taken our shots on this site. I have to believe, while some are more passionate than others, it’s all in good fun. So, it stands to reason; he who is at the greatest risk is he who wrote the article. Feedback is a door that swings both ways. If you don’t like the article close the page and choose another site. If you don’t like the feedback, write something else, for somebody else, or just quit writing. Personally, I’d just as soon see you all continue.

T-Mac: You’re absolutely right about this being a lean time during the college football year. At least we have recruiting & spring practice results to discuss, and the pro-draft to look forward to. After that, it gets real lean until fall practice begins.

Specifically to you, Kevin, my thanks for you’re continuing this web page.

    ((( Thinking out-loud here... )))
Arizona State (and Arizona) happens to have one of the Worst Homefield Advantages (as in Points value) in College Football, which also happens to be located in the Sonora Desert, the Hottest place in the U.S. Neither Devils Stadium or Arizona Stadium have artificial turf, but Im sure it gets fugken hot.

... I dont know how ASU or Arizona teams fair on the Totals (Over/Unders) though.

So Cal post #27 Yes it is hot in the desert however, the heat is usually dry heat with little or no humidity. The stadiums in Arizona are probably simular to the stadiums in say El Paso{Sun Bowl} or Lubbock {Jones}it may be 120 degrees. In the fall around here particulary Sept and Oct weve had temps around 98 to 112 with a considerable ammount of humidity.Places like Austin, Waco,Ft.Worth and H-Town are definetly
    hot places to play.
I remember the two a days with the steam rising from the mud, losing your vision and throwing up was par for the course.
The temperature is definetly a factor up north as well, places like Wisconson or Minnesota.

Tomcat, I dont know what the effect is, though.

I used Arizona & Arizona St as examples mainly cause I happen to know that they have a relatively low Homefield Edge (based on historical trends)... there are other factors that play a role besides "heat", granted, but its a strange factoid to consider.
Both teams (Home & Road) are probably affect by the Temps to similar extents. Field Turf creating hotter games may not play that big of an affect on the teams, Maybe.

... Anyway, the study was done in the Summer not the Fall... Everything being Relative, we should also compare this to what the Temperatures are above Grass Fields -- There's likely more humidity in the natural grass fields.

T-Mac: Statistically speaking, Friar Tom is likely weighing the results from last season, factoring in who's been lost from each team, what recruits are joining each team, how teams have faired over spring practice, and coming up with his own pre-season rankings. Which means, we could hear from him anytime now. Then again, he may be calculating the probability of who will be drafted by which teams; which means we may be hearing from him sooner. That, or he's busy putting artificial turf in his back yard. Come to think of it, did he ever make that move to KS?

Hey T-Mac have you caught any fish lately?
We were at Coletto Creek resivour last weekend.
No monster fish but we did catch 50 keepers all Channels and Blues. That was our total after three days, I put a chicken crate in the water and we just kept adding to it over the course of the weekend. We barbqued a brisket and had plenty of sausage. The boys had to take turns in the boat, because this year we only had one boat.My boat is a 14.5 ft alunimum boat with a 15hp Evinrude.
Nothing fancy, just right for three people max.
    Holler at ya later. Hookem

What are you so suprised at, man?

The fact that one of my rear patios has an astroturf carpet laid down on it?

What is so surprising about that?

Pretty common in this day and age...

I'm not really your typical green tree hugging hippy type...

I accept the fact that the environment is going to crap...

I just try to do my part not to eff it up to much worse than it already is...

Doesn't mean I have to buy into a lame ass astroturf heat reflection is melting the polar ice caps conspiracy...

Anymore than I buy into mass cow flatulence is deteriorating the ozone...

JMHO, but what is happening with the polar ice caps and global warming is perfectly natural in the scheme of the life of planets and stars...

Let's not forget that the sun is expanding and will eventually (in hundreds of thousands of years) expand to swallow our solar system all the way up to Mars or Jupiter...

It was gonna happen sooner or later...

It's just the circle of life...

I think alot of times as arrogant (and maybe to smart for our own good) humans, we forget their are things we have absolutely no control over and that Nature is gonna do what it's gonna do...

Yo, G-H!!! It's a Buckeye/Gator rematch. Only this time it's on the hard court instead of the grid-iron. Have you come up with an answer to my question yet? I'll just bet Tommy T would have had the answer by now. What worries me about this one are the role reversals. During FB season, everyone (including me) expounded upon the lucky wins by your Gators, not to mention what were felt to be other flaws. OSU, for the most part, was a steady performer. This time it's OSU who's in bed with "Lady Luck". (Xavior had OSU dead to rights and flat out blew it. The same was said for the game against TN.) FL has been the steady performer. Now, I'm not trying to jinx your team, but the coincidences are astounding. Much as yours is this year's team everybody loves to hate (even surpassing Notre Dame), I'm pulling for your Gators. Of course, that could be the ultimate jinx. I picked OSU for the FB NC. I guess we'll see all too soon. In the mean time, when was the last time the same two teams met for national titles in two sports in the same year? While we're at it, when was the last time a school fielded national champions in football & basketball during the same season? Tommy T where R UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!?!?!?

    Zac (#51):

I hadn't even looked for any of that info yet...

But thinking about it and given the relatively young age of actual MNC matchups in CFB I'm guessings that it probably hasn't ever happened...

As far as the OSU/UF matchup, UF hoops already put a beatdown on the Buckeyes in December...

Like most teams that UF plays, the Bucks started strong and ran with them until about 15 min left in the second half where the Gators typically pull away when they're on...

The Gators have also won their last seven basketball games played in the GA Dome (the last two SEC tourneys and last nights national semifinal) as well as the last two football games they have played there (2006, 2000)...

Not that this means a thing and I don't deal in predictions...

Should be exciting and even more exciting, at least for myself and the rest of Gator Nation, if the Billy and the Boys cna pull out another one...

TMac, Tmac, Tmac... It never fails...
TMac, Missing the Point... as always.
(Eye Of the Moox, you pay attention too)

--- Slowing it down here for you ---

    A) the Topic that K-Hue brought up had very little to do with the question of how the Temps from Field Turf actually affect the G-A-M-E...

    B) Kev there, was being political... Non-Sports topic - I called him on it. (ya remember the Kev we're talking about, right?)

    C) the "battle" Im in here (as Eye of the Mooka refers to it) is Not about arguing the merits of this study on ~Global~Warming~ non-sense... ((( going slow enough?)))... its keeping K-Hue on check (along with some razzing).

    You getting it TMac?
As far as Astro Turf/Field Turf -Vs- natural grass, I say which ever is attributed with causing Less Injuries is what I'd go with, but I dont care much either way.

    D) I dont have a dog in that turf/grass "battle", if thats whats tripping you up Mac.

The Tomcat line of discussion was more about The Affects On The Game from "heat" and so forth (actual football talk, not self-indulging political rants)... and Im saying that I'd want to know more in-depth just how extreme heat does affect games; I dont know enough. I figure both sides of the Football feel the effects(Offense & Defense), as do both sides of the field (both Teams), so what impact WOULD it have? Thats Regardless of whether its extreme heat from the Turf (as the study says) or just extreme heat in general.

    E) I'd like to know more about the true affects on the Game caused by extreme heat and so on. This study isnt about that.

Lastly, the study refers to Heat/Temps from turf-fiels in the Summer, not the Fall (when Football is played)... and it doesnt provide a base for comparison, ei, the Heat/Temps that come off of natural grass fields.

    F) I dont question the study's contextual accuracy, I question the lack of Depth in it as it pertains to FOOTBALL.

... he pretty much admits it was a silly topic, and that the 'Goracle' himself wasnt even involved in the study/article (self-indulging attempt at political comedy, on Kev's part)
... But somewhere in there, You say that the topic is "very relevant" to CFB and to "Leave the Thread Topics to Kevin".

... and its "So Cal" the Town, not "So Cal" as in "USC", but anyway...

Ive been saying it for a while, Florida is too good, too balanced, too talented at every spot on the floor. Its a bad-ass fugken team... and the best part about em is that they are such a T-e-a-m (just like Billy D described his team). About the Basketball Title game: Florida-Ohio St... I stayed off the game (I didnt bet), but I saw Florida winning it (how mu$h did you have on it Mac?). They reminded me a lot of the Pistons of '04; balanced talent, excellent team-camaraderie. I didnt have a good feel for Ohio St; didnt think Oden, Conely would be enough.

TMac, where do you come up with this "bitter" and "jealous" type of stuff ???
Joakim Noah sorta looks like a Tranny, I made a couple of jokes, what about it?
Again, like Ive said before... Ive point out that the SEC is over-Hyped in Football as a conference -- thats not "liking" or "hating" the SEC. Its just over-hyped (independent statment).

Of course I woulda wanted to see UNLV and/or USC keep winning, but is that reason enough to say that whatever I say or dont say after they lost is being "bitter"??? Come on Tmac... "be man enough" to do What ?!@?

TMac, Florida is too good, too balanced, there's no discernable weekness with that team, statistically speaking (their FT Shooting % may be average at worst)... and they're the Defending Champs, theyre as experienced as any team out there. Joakim Noah is bad-ass, he's a Big with the attitude of a gritty Guard or something.
The only thing "wrong" with them is that they've seemed a bit over-confiedent, and maybe 'thinking ahead' at certain points... I thought they might be the UConn of last year.

If we're calling each other out on integrity here... what's the real deal?

This Florida BASKETBALL team was a Much better Champion than the Florida Football team, 06 Champion. I bet the appreciation for this team is not where it should be even among Florida fans. This was one of the better seasons in College Basketball in terms of high-level caliber teams. A lot like Florida, UCLA returned largely in tact a season after reaching the Finals. Georgetown, Ohio St were also quality 1 & 2 Seeds (no George Mason's). College Football 2006 was like a fart from the 2005 season, well Im exagerating, but the caliber of "elite" teams overall was Weak.

That is a funny statement though...

So Cal, You ask me to explain what I mean by "keyboard Courage". Refer to your post 83. Everytime you get upset about something and things dont go your way YOU bring the Military into it. I set the trap and you fell right into it with YOUR post 83. That's Keyboard Courage bro. That's what I'm talking about. You are so predictable man. There are many of us on here who have extensive Military experience, but we choose to keep it private. You are not the only one So Cal. Me, if someone asks me about it I'll talk about it for a second, but that's it. You are certainly not the only person on here who has been in the Military/War. I have a friend who posts on here periodically who was awarded the "Purple Heart", but he doesn't get on here and run his mouth about it. Actually, I find that most War Veterans choose to not discuss their time. You for some reason choose to run to the "Keyboard Courage" meaning your Military service. Let me remind you for the last time. This is a College FB Fanblog and not a War blog bro. If you were in the Marine Corps and have accomplished the things you say you have then Much Props to you. Before you start with the crap remember bro, I've been in the sh*t as well. Let's leave the bragging and Macho Military talk for another place and not on an internet CFB Fanblog. Who are you trying to impress anyway? Yourself?

Me and my roommates are going out to eat so go ahead and start with the rants. I'll be in later.

jimmy bones, post 98. Don't pop off at the mouth. I did my time ( Over There ) so YOU and everybody else can have freedom of speech. I don't need to get a life. I've saved and protected lives my friend. I'm sure So Cal has also. All I'm saying is that there is a time and a place to discuss certain things bro. This is not the place for that. Regarding your comment on me and George Bush. I have no idea why you are poppin off crap like that dog. You do not know me. This is a College FB Fanblog. Let's STICK TO THAT!!!

Now, I've exercised my freedom of speech.

BTW-jimmy bones, you are welcome for me protecting you ( Over There ) for a year.

I repeat. To all of our veterans who've served this great country so we can heckle, raz, berate, insult, and otherwise be uncharitable to each other on blogs such as this...Thank You! If no one else appreciates it, I do.

Now, who was the bastage that said WVU's helmets were the shiniest? Better to be reflecting blue (short wavelength, low heat) than donning what looks like fancy cycling helmets. I think OR, among some others, uses helms such as these.

jimmy bones, since you felt the need to get sprung and talk tough here it is. Go back to MY post on ( The 25 biggest off-season QB battles ). Read my post # 111. That's it and that's all bro. However YOU feel about the ongoing War in Iraq, Afghanistan, Kosovo/Bosnia, You should support the TROOPS 100%. However YOU feel about the different Wars we are in right now YOU should support the TROOPS 100%. I couldn't give a sh*t how you feel about the current administration, but SUPPORT THE TROOPS BRO. If YOU had any clue what goes on, what YOU see, and what YOU go through Over There YOU would have to wear a DIAPER because YOU would sh*t your pants bro. The way I see it jimmy bones is this. You got 1 of 2 choices.

    Either Support the Troops OR

Go buy a Dixie Chicks cd...

What's it gonna be jimmy bones???

    T-Mac said it all...

    I'll just add this...

    Support the troops...

But you don't have to support the leadership that put them there...

Never mind my post gatorhippy if you were just adding a note to the general public to support the troops.... you know?... instead of having to support the leadership that put them there?

I think you were just adding a note for all Americans in general to abide by? But, when I first read it, I thought that maybe you might have missed the part where T-Mac said that he doesn't basically care about what anyone thinks of the administration......but that he just wants everyone to at least support the troops.

I wasn't trying to start an argument......I think now that I read it again I get what you were meaning.

I gotta add that I am also truly disturbed when "our own"(Americans) show no support what-so-ever for all of our troops. Ya know? Just because they don't agree with a War or the Aministration? It's disturbing when that happens......

Gatorhippy, post #101. Very well said my friend. I could write a book on what is going on over there, but it makes my head hurt. You are right on-point when you say that we all don't have to support the leadership that put us there. I completely agree. 100%. Gatorhippy, YOU are one of the fellow men I was talking about in an earlier post about the fact that there are many people on here who have served in the Military and War. Once again I thank you for your service. I have a very long day tomorrow so I'll sign off now. I hope that when I re-post that it will be about College FB and not these OTHER issues. Your friend T-Mac

I dont know why I am going to mention this about myself on a football blog but it seems to be the direction of the conversation...

I just got out of the Marines. MOS 0321. Serving your country is the greatest since of pride you could ever have. I actually feel sorry for those people whom havent because they dont know what they're missing. It's funny, the people farthest away from serving their country have the biggest mouths - always complaining about America and what it's doing.

If people have such a problem, Canada might be a good option for you. If you like warmer weather, I'm sure boarder patrol going from the US into Mexico isnt as tight.

hey sem. nation......hats off to you man....it's sad..to hear the stories of our own americans not supporting our troops...reguardless of how you feel about the war..supporting our troops shouldn't be an issue....and to see war protesters who show their anti-war views during flag draped cerimonies of fallen soldiers is such a lack of resect...not just for the families, but also for the people providing them their rights...our armed forces........every male in my family has spent time in the service...i lost two uncles in vietnam....but, it's the price we pay for freedom....as for the marines...well they are the first ones there...and usually the last to leave....enuff said

i am with you...if you don't like the country u live in....go somewhere else....as for me and my family....we bleed red, white, and blue...our troops are the best in the world...and we believe in them....and that is what lets us sleep good at night....

and to all our amed forces personell, everywhere.....good luck...and come home soon....
