The EA Sports NCAA 2008 Top 25

While the world sits waiting Orson's decision to buy or not to buy the XBox 360, EA Sports has unleashed its NCAA 2008 and -- with it -- their early look at the top 25.

As in year's past, here's a rundown of the EA Sports NCAA College Football 2008 Top 25 Teams:

25. Boston College
24. Texas A&M
23. Boise State
22. TCU
21. Florida State
20. Rutgers
19. UCLA
18. Georgia
17. Penn State
16. Cal
15. Tennessee
14. Nebraska
13. Auburn
12. Ohio State
11. Louisville
10. Arkansas
9. Virginia Tech
8. Oklahoma
7. Wisconsin
6. West Virginia
5. Texas
4. Florida
3. LSU
2. Michigan
1. USC

Now, if you'll excuse me, NCAA College Football 2008 finally has the Statue of Liberty play installed, so I'll be bleeding my thumbs dry for the next few weeks.

And for those of you in need, EA Sports has some pretty damn nice college football schedule wallpapers available for download at their site.

HAHA It would almost be worth buying an XBOX 360 for the statue of liberty play alone. Now just to wait for the price to drop, and the failure rate to go far below 30%. More like.. um.. 1-3% would be acceptable.

Hmmm. I'm starting to notice a pattern going on here. First, a thread about inflatable tents. Now one on a video game. What's next? A thread about online sports betting? NCAA sponsered viagra?

Did they really put a Boise State player on the cover of the box??

One of the very first threads we ever did was about online wagering and how the spreads work. Might have to dust that off. ;)

couple things first of all yes war eagle they did put boise st on the cover, second i really hope that they balanced the passing game with running game this time around. in 07 the passing game was extremely unbalanced. the most common tactic was to simply take the QB and run backwards as far as possible so the defense could never sack and then bomb a 60 plus yard throw over and over again. it would only work about 1 out of every 3 but hey that's all you need. the addition of the jumpcatching should definately help as now players can get royaly f-ed if they jump up for a catch to get creamed mid-air by a defender. i can't tell you how many times i sent everyone on prevent and my roomate has just airballed from his own 10 only to have a reciever stand in one place while being triple covered and just catch the ball like a popfly ball in baseball. furthermore MAKE WHITE AND SLATON FASTER!! multiple times in 07 a defender actually caught up to them while running, something that i have yet to ever see happen in real life.

Interesting: Exactly the top 3 I picked. After that, it's a bunch of question marks. I still say FL, WI, & WV, not to mention AR & UCLA, are ranked too high. FSU & Rutgers are ranked a bit too low. Oh, what the heck, here's how I see it. No doubt I'll catch hell, but here goes.

    1. USC
    2. MI
    3. LSU
    4. TX
    5. VA Tech
    6. TN
    7. OK
    8. FSU
    9. WV
    10. OR St
    11. Auburn
    12. Louisville
    13. OSU
    14. WI
    15. FL
    16. NE
    17. PA St
    18. Rutgers
    19. Boise St
    20. Cal
    21. GA
    22. BC
    23. Miami
    24. ND
    25. A&M

For those of you who think I'm wrong or just plain nuts, right on!

I think USF should make the top 25 and I agree with War Eagle, the dude from Bosie State looks 40 and def shouldnt be on the cover. I guess it was a toss up between them and Rutgers. Maybe next year they should think about some DII+ schools or maybe even community colleges for the cover

Sorry, but the quality of this series is going down the tubes for my money. NCAA 05 was great, 06 was good, but 07 was pitiful.

Now that EA has the licence/monopoly on CF console games, they have no need to get better until they have competition again.

If I buy 08, it will only be because I have no NCAA game that will run on my 360.

Regan, that's good to hear from where I stand, the last edition I have is 2005- they quit making them for Gamecube after that.

Although I wouldn't blame EA entirely- the NCAA is one that allows them to make the game, whether EA demands that EA be the only producer is a question I have yet to see answered, but it seems like the NCAA only likes to deal in one video game per sport, so they may be more to blame.

But I surely agree that things won'r get any better until there's more competition.

Of course, what's preventing another company of doing an unliscened like Bill Walsh College Football-you couldn't use the name of a school, only the place (city, or for Universities named after the state, the state's name), but the characters and their numbers were consistent with the actual players (especially Bo on Auburn '83).

Good post AU03. I also only have the 05 edition of NCAA Football for Gamecube. What was the reason for not having the 06 and 07 editions for the GC? I plan to buy the XBOX 360 so I can play the 08 version. And in reply to GATORgreg's post - who else besides Zabransky deserves to be on the cover? He left the only team that finished undefeated last year, and was a critical leader in the Bronco's Fiesta Bowl victory. I can't see any other marquee player (who left for the NFL (part of EA's criteria)) who is more worthy of the cover spot.

EA is a monopolizing giant. personally i hate what they have done to football. you can always tell the people who know nothing about their systems when they look at madden or ncaa and say "wow these games look amazing!" are you serious? these games look like poo on a stick compaired to other games like halo 3, gears of ware etc. i won't get into those but point is EA owns the entire football market. nobody can compete because nobody wants to play knock off brand teams. while old time gamers may love it the point is that the mainstream gameplay is in the morons who have a 20+ game collection in which every single one ends in a year of some sort (05, 06, 07). mainly for the new rosters. and EA purposefully leaves stuff out. example stadiums. last years rendition they purposefully left out 50% of the things that had made the ncaa series so great as well as almost half of the D-1A team stadiums. why? because people would buy it regardless because "it looks so amazing on the 360!!" this year what did they do? first put in all the stuff that was ALREADY IN THE SERIES for the last 5 years yet left out of the next gen system versions. then (hmm that was cool what boise st. did...) "HEY EVERYONE OUR GAME IS GOING TO HAVE TRICK PLAYS YEAR!!!" once again nickel and dimming till the last cent.i really wish EA would loose their license somehow of the NCAA (not to mention espn, another monopoly there. it would let a development company that KNOWS how to make a good game ex. silicon knights, bungie, bethesda studios i know they never would because they're always so busy and the sports genre is considered a lost market right now with the EA buyouts but still you get the point. EA not being to blame, please after they lost so much money from 2K sport's "ESPN NFL 2K5" released at only $30 they wanted blood. so they bought up the NFL license, NCAA license, and just to stick it to them the ESPN license supposively because they wanted to make "poker games". i tell ya something smells like bullsh$t around here.

Excellent points on the natural monopoly EA gets via the NCAA. I think most posters will agree with me that the NCAA has been a scourge to college football. Lack of competition will discourage any enterprise from providing a better product. So what is our hope here, that EA will decide to invest a bunch of $ to make CF a better game? Why? They have great sales without changing the game very much... I guess someone could argue that all other games pose a threat (a form of competition) to the EA CF game... But I know for me that isn't true. I don't care how good Gears of War is! If it doesn't feature Brandon Cox with a laser-rocket arm, throwing from behind a questionable O-Line to a questionable receiving corps, I don't give a f*ck.

I miss the days of Sega's 1993 Bill Walsh. Where you could get a defensive back to turn in to "fish man" -- basically, flopped on the ground but still capable of moving at normal speed, and impossible to block. Does anyone know what I am talking about? Damn that was an awesome game.

I would love to know how Michigan could possibly be ranked #2? They showed how they ranked among the elit teams in the ass stompin they recieved at the hands of SC in last years Rose bowl, and further thru the poundin OU took at the hands of FLA. Does Michigan get the honor of being preseason #2 based on their tradition alone? Must be, cause I think that the majority of the top 15 teams would easily kick their ass. Shame they play such a cream puff schedule. Their 2007 schedule will ensure the walls stay white washed until the end of the season yet again.

    ok improvements
THIS IS IMPORTANT!! get rid of scripted plays! for those of you who don't know i'm not talking about the football plays i'm talking about the movments of the players particularly for tackles and catching. they need to develope some kinda of physics system in the game. don't get me wrong there should be some scripting ex. arms wrapping around a player, knee's not bending in ways they're not ment to (though it would pay homage to micheal bush last year :-o), but there is entirely to much scripting. this is the reason why there are so many glitches in the game. say what you want but compaired to most games raking in the income that the ncaa franchise is there is a drasticly high amount of game glitches. you all know what i'm talking about, two players go up for a ball the game somehow decides that it will be a catch for the receiver. about 10 feet from the him suddenly the ball almost grabbed by the flash himself will shoot into the receivers hands (many times through a defenders hands!) and come down with the ball. that is poor programing and a cheap way to get away with not having to develope the right kinda of physics system. now the same play with a kind of physics system would be different. the ball moving would not altered course or speed and as a receiver went for the ball it would only count as a catch if his hands touched it, and even then there would be the random errors to make him drop once in a while. however the more important thing is if a defender got in the way the pass would be blocked just as it would in real life helping to cut back on the regular "hail mary" approach to the game as i stated earlier. what plays also into this is the collision detection. EA is horrible with this. collision detection involves making sure that nothing crosses through another object in the game case in point PLAYERS!! there is no reason players should pass through each other and almost more importantly the ball!! i lost a game to someone playing as the gators one time because at the last second he threw a pass 5 yards to a receiver directly behind the line and blitzing players and it was ruled a touchdown. so what right? when put in slow motion afterward we watched the ball go through not one, not two, but three players heads for the winning touchdown!! that's just bad BAD programing. kinda brings new definition to the term bullet pass if it was something that was rare it wouldn't be a problem but it seems i can never play a game without some random thing happening at some point in the game that helps a player drastically. ok i'm done...at least till someone has something to argue....

Does anyone know if on the 360 NCAA/Madden 08 will give you the ability to play a season online? We used to run seasons in college - but now that we don't live by each other an online season would be sweet. What would be the point of online gaming (football) if you can't run a season with multiple people????????????

    Two quick points:

#1 Most of the football games that competed head to head against the Madden/NCAA series couldn't hold a candle to what EA put out - with the exception of my beloved Tecmo Super Bowl.

#2 That said, EA made its most significant improvements to the franchise when it was facing direct competition, whether it was from Joe Montana Football, NFL2K, or Jerry Glanville's Pig-Skin FootBrawl (sorry, had to throw that one into the mix).

No competition is almost always bad - and that certainly is the case here. There's not excuse for having only half of the stadiums rendered in this day and age.

On a completely unrelated tangent - does anyone know of a group that puts together year-in-review videos for the college football season (no team-specific, but just like a 2hr DVD of the best moments of 2006, 2005, 2004...).

I've been dying to find something like this - but the best I've been able to do is keeping old episodes of College Gameday Final on my DVR.

I think the 1992 team is ranked way too low by most of you. They finished 11-1 and #2 in the nation. Sure, Chollie struggled some early, but by the end of the year, they were, in my opinion, the best team in the country. I remember watching the replay of the UF game and hearing Brent Musburger say just that (for what it's worth). If they'd have just made the field goal to tie Miami, I think they would have been in New Orleans playing 'Bama instead of the Hurricants. A good point was made about criteria for the ranking. What's more important? I'm looking more at which teams would win head-to-head. In that regard, I think the 1999 team, even though it went undefeated and wire-to-wire, is probably about 6th best. I'd rate 1993, 1991, 1992, 1996, and 1987 ahead of 1999.

I also think if Thomas had made the field goal in 1991, it would have completely erased "Wide Right" from history. We would have won MNC's in 1991-93, Nebraska wouldn't have lost to Texas in 1996 and we would have kicked their butts for the championship, we would have beaten UF in 1997 and beaten Nebraska again for either a split NC with Michigan or the title outright, Weinke wouldn't have gotten hurt in 1998 and we would have beaten UT, and Snoop would have been eligible against OU in the 2001 OB, which we would have won. So, in case you're counting, IMO, making the kick in 1991 would have led to an alternate reality in which we won NC's in 1991-93 and 1996-2000; that's 8 in a span of 10 years. Where's Doc Brown with a DeLorean when you need one?

also (24) eye of the tiger i'm happy you like how each year improves. did you ever think about what is improving in them. most of the things which improve EA has thought up a long time ago. the only thing though is if they give you all of these things from the get go what reason would you have to buy the next years edition?? here is what should happen with it. spend 2 years developing a GOOD game that is damn near flawless like MOST game developers so that you don't need a new game but once every 3-4 years. then simply release downloads for updated rosters every year and maybe updated stadiums (though if they spent the right amount of time doing it they should easily be able to make all the stadiums) and they could charge $5 to download. there you go and they would still make tons of money off of it, but as long as morons will pay the 60 dollers every year for a few new features that have already been made and took some programers a few weeks to impliment. EA will never do it. and how do their employees work so much and still put out crappy games? easy look at the shear amount of games that EA makes. when you're being bounced around from so many different projects how can you possibly spend time to make one of them good? ok next argument....

My son owns the 2006 edition which was based upon the 2004 season. Each team is ranked on both offense & defense{ for example A,B,C etc.
Some of the matchups or teams skill levels are not close enough. We try to play the games that we like to watch, like Arkansas vs Texas and Baylor vs TCU etc.Texas skill level on this game is way above Arkansas so its not really as evenly matched as these teams change every year.
TCU's defense sucks on this game, heck Baylor beats TCU every time.
I just remind myself its only a game, I also enjoy the fact that after Texas beat Mich in the Rose bowl they put Mich on the cover. The next year Texas beat USC in the N.C. game so they put USC on the cover.
I've of the opinion that the top 50 to 70 teams should be more evenly matched.

WVU should be ranked at 5 or higher - the offense alone is the best in the country, and the defense is fixing itself up. And if anyone wants to bitch about the conference, here you go:

    http://www.usatoday.com/sports/sagarin/fbc06.htm

this was the same indicator that many cited when craping on the conference, and perhaps rightly so, as it put the Big East at #8 the year before.

But that was then, this is now. WVU is for real, ladies. And so is the Big East.

i no longer have ANY respect for ANY top 25 ranking. there are just waaay too many college teams and conferences. preseason rankings just pisss me off soo badly because they are sooo terrible. this begs the question - are we ranking teams based on who we truly think are the top 25 teams, or, are we ranking teams based on the teams we think will have the best record?
if the latter is true, then i might agree with the rankings. if not then all these preseason rankings ive seen suck incredibly hard.

well i guess its about time i call the national title game.
    USC vs. Texas
USC - ambassador of the BCS demolition. eventually people will get tired of seeing USC have an automatic ticket to the title game every year. unless they completely blow it like last year, we will be seeing them in Arizona this January.

does it really matter though? any college football fan with a brain knows the SEC champ is top dog. like, youd think after the florida romping last season that the preseason polls would be a little kinder to the SEC. but no... it really is depressing to be an SEC fan and know the only way we'll ever be represented in the title game is via miracle. the SEC WEST alone has more good teams than any other conference in the country. its actually getting rediculous. in this season we have:
LSU, Auburn, Alabama, Arkansas, Ole Miss (west)
Tennessee, Florida, South Carolina, Georgia (east)

heres how i see the SEC preseason rankings:
    LSU - over rated
    Auburn - well rated
    Alabama - under rated
    Arkansas - over rated
    Ole Miss - under rated
    Tennessee - under rated
    Florida - over rated
    South Carolina - under rated
    Georgia - well rated

and in my mind of genius, all of those teams deserve a top 25 ranking but it will be impossible for them all to have a top 25 record. and the sadder part is, not even all of those teams will get a bowl game this year.

Post #16, you're just not to bright are you? Michigan allowed just shy of 500 total rushing yards last year. Some teams gave that up in one or two games. That defense was stifling and the offense started to sputter because of injuries at the end of the year. In the Rose Bowl vs. USC, Michigan didn't want to be there and their lack of effort showed. As for your top 15 teams analysis, you apparently arent' very versed in football. We lost some players on D but our very potent offense is senior laden and healthy. There is 4-5 All-American candidates on this offense and the defense, while not filled with the names like last season, will be solid. We are still Michigan. We replace NFL talent with more NFL talent. When our offense will average 35 ppg, we don't need the defense we had last year. Learn about the teams and their situations before talking sports out your a**. You would've been great for that ESPN commercial.

    #14 and #47

USC's tough schedule isn't really in the OOC this year. Well, I have a lot of respect for Nebraska this year, but Notre Dame??? Anyway, they should be able to get through both of those games relatively easy. Their challenge will actually be getting out of the PAC-10 itself. I've always been the first one to knock the PAC-10, but this year I think Arizona, CAL, Oregon, Oregon St., Washington, and UCLA are all capable of beating USC.

Um... Wheres Georgia Tech? I know they lost Calvin Johnson but they also lost Reggie Ball. Taylor Bennett is a solid QB. Tech has a strong defense and believe it or not their offense is better even though they lost Calvin Johnson. Tashard Choice is one of the ACC's best running backs. Im not saying they should be in the top 10 but in the top 25 at least.

Hmm, the people claiming Arkansas is overrated are the people who don't realize that Arkansas won 10-straight games, and the 4 they lost were to top 5 programs.

If Arkansas was in the top 5, they'd be overrated, but as it stands, Arkansas' conference record (7-1) was identical to the National Champion Florida Gators (in the same conference, I might add), and their 4 losses were to teams whose final top 25 rankings were #5, #4, #3, and #1 (USC, Wisconsin, LSU, Florida).

And all that said...who is Arkansas losing? Two defensive 2nd round draft picks, an O-line 2nd round draft pick.

But no one is leaving from the skill positions. Arkansas still has All-American Doak Walker award winning Darren "501" McFadden. He destroyed some of the nations best defenses in the SEC his freshmen season, and again in his sophomore season with an injured foot, so why wouldn't he do it again his junior season?

Felix Jones is still here. He's one of the top kick returners in the nation, and he'd be a stellar starting RB, but as it stands, we only need him for back up. Felix Jones would be a starting running back at most (non-DMac) Division I-A colleges today.

And guess what? We've also still got Marcus Monk. Peyton Hillis is healthy. Casey Dick is healthy, so he'll have the starting QB job start to finish instead of letting some punk kid get in the way.

O-Line is reloading. Defense is ripped and ready to go.

AND! We recruited an excellent place kicker, so I'm not even hardly concerned about our kicking game this season!

Arkansas' soft OOC schedule this season means an undefeated season and a shot at the national championship is not out of the question.

But we've got some tough conference games to get through. Playing Auburn and South Carolina at home will be tough enough, but we've also got some road games to 3 places that opposing teams simply hate playing in: Alabama, Tennessee, LSU.

Mountaineer I think I agree with you, kind of, I played with WVU alot last year because UT sucked on the game, I ran the option alot and ran Slaton every way a guy can with good results. BUT, once people keyed in on the run against me I struggled because much like UT this year, the Neers WR's weren't that great last year. You guys have anyone that's really good this year on it?

My copy of the game was shipped out on Tuesday and hopefully it will be here somewhere between this Friday and next Tuesday. OU Fan I've been playing it since midnight on the 17th. I like it, sure alot of the stuff is the same but alot of the new features are sweet. It seems more balanced to me, the defenses seem like they react faster. Special teams is faster, and if you don't stay in your lanes on kickoffs you will get burnt, I've already given up 3 TD's over 90 yds by getting out of lanes. The QB has more mobility in the pocket to step up, back or to the side to avoid sacks, I like that. I'd say 8 to 9 is a reasonable score.

The games is terrible! Has been since it hit next gen systems. Not rendering some of the stadiums, too many turnovers, no refs on the field, not being able to create schools. The recruiting is worse then last, yeah they added the calling feature but it gets tideous and repetitive. Gang tackling isn't what its said to be. I just think like mentioned before the game is taking major steps back. 04,05,06= GREAT GAMES. But ever since... EA needs to step it back up

Man this games is really taking major strides back. EA needs to go back and pay attention to the little things and what made the game what we've come to love over the years. No stadium/pregame entrances/analysis. No stadium pulse or crowd interactions on the game is terrible. It's as if they crowd isn't there, no matter what plays you make they sound as if they never change volums. And the one thing that has killed me since they next gen version has been out (two years) is the fact that in head to head play your opponent can see your exact play. EA I'm sure has gotten complaints about this but didn't change it for whatever reason. If they took the exact game from the 06 PS2 or XBOX version and tranfered it to the next gen systems they game would be great but instead you have this Garbage. Thanks EA Thanks. This is all MHO

So… i have playstation 3 and i am currently playing the campus legend mode and i have won the BCS 5 my freshman year and afterwards it doesn’t let me save! the screen goes blank. i have obviously tried on 5 different occasions and it has failed ever time. is anyone else having this problem. i would also like to add that i exchanged my game for a new one to check if it was the game and it still hasn’t worked.

    (#4) Kevin,

If you find that thread on how spreads work, can you e-mail it to me (link)? I'm not big on gambling, so I never took the time to study spreads. However, I always have beeb curious as to how they work.

ok usc national champions again...mr big and tough crappy pac-10...why do you keep saying the sec sucks when they had 9 teams at a bowl and they had 6 of those 9 teams win the bowl...seems like i remember seeing usc lose to frickin ucla...and in that big argument u didnt say a single thing about spurriers program and all the success hes having...and if u want to go backwards and bragg about that usc has only beaten south carolina 1 time since theyve been playing football...but anyway about that #2 toughest schedule i think ur mistaken because if i may recall south carolina has the #2 toughest schedule

Every poll has TCU in the top 25 with an average of 17 but it is not listed in your top 25 according to "USC National Champions Again." BYU beat them, TCU, quite easily, in their own stadium last year and will beat them again in Provo this year, yet you don't have them in your top 25. UCLA is predicted to be second in the PAC 10, yet you don't have them in your top 25 any higher than 22, while all other polls have them from 9 to 14. Utah is strong. Arizona should be around 7 in the Pac 10 this season. How about honorable mention for pulling themselves out of the seller rut that them have been in several seasons in the recent past. Good to see that you include Hawaii, even if only at #25. Also nice to see that you included Boise State at #17. Is there really a true division anymore between the so called Majors and the so called mid majors in college football conferences? Don't we all, majors and mid majors, have a top 3 that can compete with anyone ibn gthe nation, while at the same time we have a bottom 3 that can lose to anyone from the majors and/or mid majors?

Come on little Cock and no Fire are you serious? What has Spurrier done besides nothing & get outta here with 1 win ever, how many times have they played once & when was this 1950 lets keep it in this century.Do you really think S.Carolina would want to be embarrassed by SC this year?Im sure even you know who the real USC is.Because you know when people here USC they definetly dont think of South Carolina and its mediocre program. They think of the powerhouse that is Southern Cal!!!!
