Who is the ultimate Big Man on Campus?
Looking out at all the positions on all the teams in the land... what's the best position to have college football? Who's THE man?
I'll get the ball rolling......
It would be easy for me to make a case for... LB at Penn State, RB at USC, QB at USC, or even WR at Michigan, however...
I think quarterback at Notre Dame is the ultimate position in college football and -- in turn -- the ultimate Big Man on Campus. Despite the ups and downs, the Irish are arguably the most talked about team in the country year-in and year-out. The UND quarterback position has a storied history -- Angelo Bertelli, John Huarte, Paul Hornung, Joe Montana, Tony Rice, and on and on and on -- of legendary games played out in the glory that is Notre Dame Stadium.
What say you - who is the ultimate Big Man on Campus?

Right now this very moment? Even though he hasn't actually "started" in a "game" it's UF's Tebow. The kid is already a legend. I know a ton of UF fans and most of them treat Tebow like he's a god already. It's sort of weird considering how little he's really done.

I think I'll lightly argue the Linebacker reputation at Penn State. Are we breaking this down by the decade? How about Miami for linebackers and Miami for defensive backs.
If my memory is good, I recall that 3 out of 4 linebackers in the Giants/Ravens Superbowl were Miami Hurricanes. However, Tennessee has been picking up steam in the draft lately (for DB's.)
*Ohio State for Offensive line.
*USC for running back and QB.
*Miami for flankers.
*FSU for "scat-back" type running backs.
*Virginia Tech & Notre Dame for holding the clipboards in the NFL while the Miami kids go to Superbowls & ProBowls. :O)Nolen1999 said:

The U is well represented. How the hell did Adrian Peterson make #50 if he hasn't even played in a single pro game?

Linebacker = Penn State, Texas A&M or Ohio State
Safety = USC, Texas or Miami
Cornerback = Michigan, Texas or Notre DameReturn Specialist = Florida State or Miami
Kicking = Hawaii or Florida StateThere are a lot of great choices, my picks are based on tradition over a long period of time.

I really hope he doesn't run too much this year in Baton Rouge, but take a peak at that video and fastforward to about 3:19. There you will see Tebow walk the All-American LaRon Landry back about 10 yards

Kevin... it's gotta be QB.
Especially after Vince.
No other player could completely destroy a great team like he did. I don't care if we had Earl and Ricky running the wishbone, they couldn't have done what Vince did. QB has the ultimate advantage of being involved in every offensive play, and when they can run and throw like Vince, the impact is huge.
Also, how many positions can you completely turn around a NFL team your first year out of college? I guess Earl sorta did, but not to the extent Vince did.

I say punter at the University of Tennessee. He never has to make clutch plays. All he has to do is punt a stupid football at practice. And everyone know that women love punters. Plus punting is the only position where the backup will go to the lengths of stabbing the starter to take his spot.

I think you have to go with Quarterback for USC. Two Heisman winners since 2000, Hollywood atmostphere, National Championship attention every year, and the chance to beat the former “Big Man on Campus” (Notre Dame QB) every year.

The position in College Football that is The Position has to the Running Back...if you look at past Heisman trophy winners: 40 were Running Backs...24 were Quarterbacks...2 were Fullbacks...2 were Wide Receivers and 1 was a Defensive Back.

#1 Position based on what? Probability of turning pro as a high draft choice? Getting more women than players at other positions? Getting more if the noteriety by the student body and media (which is usually the QB and most schools)?
I think the criteria for being the BMOC needs to be stated more directly. Otherwise:
Media Doll- QB's
Ladies Man- RB's
Mr. Style- WR's
Party Animals- DE's and LB's
Rebels- DB's

Hey Jack, lay off the Jim before you post! Tebow has already proven that he has at least four plays: run left, run straight, run right, and fake the run then throw to the wide open guy while the entire opposing team bites!

Come on Kevin Donahue the quarterback from Notre Dame not quite tell me if this is so who was the BMOC in the years before Quinn. You would have to go back at least 15 years to Ric Meyer or even further to Tony Rice neither which did a god damn thing in the pros.I would have to say:
QB is the more often then not the BMOC just not from a school that hasn't won a bowl game in 9 years. Its got to be SC at least this century.

I don't think you have any idea as to how different schools are perceived on a national level. For example, you point out that UND hasn't won a bowl game in eons -- and yet we're all still talking about them ALL THE TIME. USC is bragging about wins over the Irish year in and year out -- BUT WE'RE STILL TALKING IRISH FOOTBALL.
Don't you get it? Notre Dame is THE college football program in the country. They're just one little notch above everybody else.
And -- most respectfully -- let's get at least one decade in the books before we start talking about "this century".

Yup...
As much as you hate it...
The Irish ARE college football personified...
A real life legend of mythic proportions in the world of post-secondary gridiron history...
Walking history...
Hence, QB at Notre Dame is THE premier position in all the land...
They just haven't had the supporting cast since '88...

Kevin Donahue you still didn't answer the question before Quinn who was there? How could this be the ultimate BMOC, if you cant name anyone decent @ QB for 15 years. The only reason Im talking about N.D is because you brought them up nomally I save it until after we beat them which is every year.I just cant call em one notch above everyone else because hasnt looked like that to me when they play real powers(LSU,Michigan,Ohio St. & SC)Because of people like you they have stole BCS bids the past two years! So Notre Dame fans be proud people like Kevin still talk about you even though you guys suck!

I don't know, gatorhippy. The Irish had great supporting casts in '93 and '91 and '89... and 2005 wasn't really that bad.
In fairness, the QB at USC has been a bigger man on campus the last five years (since Bob Davie, yes, that Bob Davie, beat USC in 2000 and '01, with QBs Matt LoVecchio and Carlyle Holiday), and Brady Quinn's not helping the cause of the ND QB with his behavior of late. Regardless of which Irish contender gets the starting QB job by the end of the season, though, you can expect to see him on a lot of magazine covers a year from now.

In the undisputed most dominating conference in college football [as if i even need to say it, the SEC], which is a run dominated legaue, the lead running back for leading rushing team in said conference, is by FAR the B.M.O.C. Wait, B.M.O.N.C.A.A. is absolutely #5 McRazorFadden!!!

Come on little Cock and no Fire are you serious? What has Spurrier done besides nothing & get outta here with 1 win ever, how many times have they played once & when was this 1950 lets keep it in this century.Do you really think S.Carolina would want to be embarrassed by SC this year?Im sure even you know who the real USC is.Because you know when people here USC they definetly dont think of South Carolina and its mediocre program. They think of the powerhouse that is Southern Cal!!!!

alright "real" usc, you say the sec sucks and they never have these biased top ratings u so avidly achieve. have u ever thought that the reason its tough for an sec team to stay ranked is because its an sec team. the sec is controlled by defense and most pac 10 offenses wouldnt stand a chance, therefore sec teams lose to thier own conference foes every year and make it very tough to get top bcs rankings. so there, stick that up ur trojan horse.

lol nah i didnt get schooled mr big guy...all the pac 10 has is southern cal and yeah they are a good team but the rest of the pac 10 is a joke compared to the sec...maybe vandy and the 2 powers of mississippi would have trouble with all those other teams but arkansas auburn lsu florida tennessee georgia alabama might get back together and the gamecocks with spurrier are going to the stars and beyond...just sit back and watch ur trojans drop even if it takes untill the NC till yall play a good team...and yes yall did get arkansas good but that was when they sucked and they have got alot better now...just think the all-sec team vs the all-pac10 team would be a joke...it wouldnt be a match...it would just be a blowout 69-3 or sumthin...and south carolina is going to have prolly one of the strongest defenses this yeer...many letterman returning including 9 of our starters and many of our injured players are back so we will dominate u just wait

WVU fans don’t consider, in fact likely don’t care who’s the big man on someone else’s campus, let alone Notre Dame. WVU fans love their team, and only consider other teams as to whether or not we can bet them and by how much. But, if I had to guess, at WVU, I’d have to say it’s a toss up between QB’s & RB’s. We’ve had and have some good ones in both categories. At QB you have Major Harris, Marc Bulger, Rashid Marshall, and now Pat White (just to name a few). At RB you have Amos Zeroue, Avon Coburn, Quincy Willson (C-Dogg, your Canes should remember him.), and now Steve Slaton (again, just to name a few). In a couple of years it should be Jarrett Brown & Noel Devine. Rightly or wrongly, those seem to be the guys that garner all of the attention, whether they want it or not. Now, I fully realize most of these individuals are not house-hold names, but to WVU fans, they’re special.
