New College Football Helmets for 2007

Ten college football teams will be sporting new helmets this season, as per the ever amazing Helmet Project.

As previously mentioned, Michigan State reverts to their classic helmet design, which harkens back to the Spartan shells from the late 70s and late 90s.

In addition to their new stadium, UCF dons new helmets this year as well, marking the first time the school has gone with a white shell since the programs inception in the late 70s. The "stacked" UCF is also a new logo design, which continues the evolution of the university's imagery.

Bowling Green is also going back to the future, with a helmet design that is reminiscent of their late 1960's helmets. For the past 30 years, the Falcon has appeared on the school's lids, but now Bowling Green has flipped the bird completely.

Minnesota is showing off their new "M" on this year's helmet, the first change to the helmet since 1999.

Kansas has a completely new font on their helmet this year, and a slightly new blue - which is not a surprise as Charles at the Helmet Project notes that KU has sported many, many, many shades of blue over the years.

For football, it will be the fourth different uniform since 2001. Terry Allen-coached teams had a royal-blue color through the 2001 season. KU changed to a dark blue when coach Mark Mangino was hired before the 2002 season, then switched to the university-wide “KU blue” before the 2005 season — around the same time adidas replaced Nike as the athletic department’s apparel provider.

The university adopted the Trajan font lettering in the summer of 2005, paying $88,900 to LandreyMorrow, a Portland, Ore., firm, to help come up with the design. By that time, KU’s football uniforms already were in the works, which is why the block lettering and numbering has been seen on the helmets and jerseys the last two seasons.

The Mean Green of North Texas have a new coach and a new helmet, the team's first white shell since the late 1960s.

Temple begins play in the MAC this year with a completely new uniform design, including a new helmet that pulls from Owls uniforms from the 1970s.

The Rice Owls are implementing circus lettering, which pulls the traditional "R" commonly used on the baseball team's uniforms and caps onto a traditional navy shell.

Syracuse has a new helmet design, moving away from the throwback helmet design to go with a block "S" design never before seen on Orange helmets. Interestingly enough, the new design is a blue on orange, which is the complete opposite of the orange "S" that Syracuse introduced across the entire athletic department in 2005.

Arkansas State has a slight revision to their traditional helmets, with more definition on their lettering reminiscent of the helmet designs from the mid-1990s.

I'm a UCF grad, I just hate these new helmets and lack of "Golden." Only 'change' I like is the on-campus stadium, but who wouldn't?!

hey if your program is stumbling, nothing like a helmet or uniform change to distract attention from onfield results.

    #1 - UCF
    #2 - Michigan State
    #3 - North Texas

The R on the Rice helmet does not belong in college football.

P.S. All you Spartan fans !! Michigan has used the same helmet design since 1938 =)

I don't even know what that means...

But I'll assume that you feel that UF should change their helmet design...

    I tell you what...

I'll talk to my connectionc in the athletic office and let them know how you feel...

Surely they'll care what a Nole has to say...

    In the mean time...

Why don't you check into when the next time FSU will sport their "Conquered" kits at Ron Zook Field...

Don't take it too hard Im joking......sort of........But seriously, there is no team in the nation that would have beat Florida.......they played a perfect game.

the most shocking change of all the helmets above has got to be Syracuse. And in a bold move to further get there point across of who they are they slap a GIANT BLUE "S" on there? WTF!!! that's just WRONG. this could only be compared to Notre Dame putting a giant "ND" on the side of the shell.....one of the most recognizable traits of certain schools is the helmet. i.e Michigan, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Syracuse etc....IF 'Cuse is on t.v. and I'm hammered I might think I'm watching a bunch of guys running around in orange helmets with a number 5 on the side! LMFAO!!!

my vote for best throwback uniform is Miami's Golden Helmet with the Red Hurricane Flags. So much better than the red/green "U" ha ha....please bring those to Norman!!!!

#36 Tomcat, It was a HUGE change to the Michigan State helmets............they put a white stripe down the center of the helmet...................ALERT THE MEDIA....!!!! MICHIGAN STATE ADDS WHITE STRIPE TO THEIR HATS!!

Let me give all of you a history lesson about the Michigan state unis..........A long time ago in a world of football long since gone,..........one thing has always remained the same..........Michigan always stomps on state........well state used to wear the old brown leather helmets, but at the end of the Michigan game their helmets and uni's were green??????? So every year they tried to wear a different color.......and every year at the end of the Michigan game their helmets and unis were green...........well finally one of the state players decided to find someone smart that could tell him why his uniform turned completely green by the end of every Michigan game...........so he came to the first Michigan football player he saw and asked him why the Michigan uniforms never changed color but his own changed, well the Michigan player kindly explained that when you get dragged through grass that some of the grass rubs off on your clothing.

So State decided to use green helmets and unis, since they would turn green after the Michigan game anyway.

#40 CaNEsALum First you dog the 12 North now its the Rice Owls. The Rice Owls were 7-6
    The Miami were 7-6
Rice probably has the highest acedemics in the south. A very small university with high standards.Located in the Houston they ended their season with a loss to Troy in a Bowl. They had a 6-2 conference record and the other losses came to Texas, UCLA and FSU

Rice has the best Helment and one of the best
QB to WR combo's in the nation.
    Chase Clement to Jarrett Dillard
Jarrett Dillard 91 rec 1247 yds 21 TDs
Joel Armstrong plays 2nd string QB and WR
    In 07 Rice 30 Houston 31
    Miami 14 Houston 13
Coach David Bailiff former HC at Texas State and former Def Coord at TCU starts his first season at Rice
They face three Big XII opponents
Sept 8 at Floyd Casy in Waco
this game might not have any national implications however looks like a great matchup between two old SWC rivals. Both have spread offensive attacks and the Owls D should be better.
Think I'll record the TCU vs UT game and drive up to Waco. Thats what its all about, my son can wear his Baylor gear and I'll wear Rice
    Go Owls
