USC should have dropped to #2, Wisconsin should be ranked higher than Oklahoma (In the coaches' poll. Washington State is a better team than North Texas), and Louisville should be ranked higher than texas! They did blowout the team they scheduled!

Lennie, I agree. I expected TX AND VA Tech both to fall in the polls a little, not to mention FL St & TN. I expected MI to fall, but not completely out of the polls. Oh, wait! They might still be ranked in 1-AA. Somebody check...

Not to look ahead, but I'm going to make a point about these polls...

If LSU beats Va Tech, then beats Auburn, then beats UF, they won't be the #1 team in America, provided USC doesn't lose...

That's just a frank, honest admission from both an LSU fan and an impartial observer...

I also think it's complete and utter bullshit...

Take it for what it's worth...

    #3 (UF)
    #9 (VT)
    #13(AU)
    #18(AR)

    versus...

    #10 (Cal)
    #14 (Nebraska)
    #17 (UCLA)

It's a crying damn shame, to be honest with you...

Marko, is there a reason you picked the third week to start ranking teams. There are many teams out there that have schedules in which they play no real competition in the first couple weeks of the season. What more would you be able to tell from a team beating weak teams than you could tell from practice? An example would be with Florida starting out with the powerhouses of Western Kentucky and Troy, would you be able to tell if they deserve to be a highly ranked team from those two games? Or if Ohio State dismantles Youngstown State and Akron, would prove where they should be ranked? The rankings should either come out in the middle of the season after all the teams have been forced to play some tough games, or keep the worthless preseason polls.

These voters just vote for scores and points but not for team quality. It is really easy for kids to vote UM out of top 25. The voters voted UM as #5 in one week and out of the top 25 in the following week. UM may be back within top 20 the next week. OSU drops because UM's big loss. It seems a sample math issue. They have no credit. UM should stay in the top 25 considering the team quality.

@#13 good point. the polls mean nohing it's plain to see from week 1. personally i think we played down to ecu level, we played flat no "d" no "o" yeah i think it had a lot to do with the happenings off field the tragedy, the gift from ecu etc. maybe VT didn't open their playbook who knows?? but they didn't look ike the #9 team in the country period! We'll see in Baton rouge what were made of. right now if we go to lsu playing like that we'll be killed!

@#17 UM got smoked by the better team Saturday. I watched the encore presentation last night of the entire game. Appy St. was the better team Saturday period. No excuses. UM got outclassed and outplayed by the little guy. UM still has a tremendous amount to play for. Get over it, lick your wounds, and get ready for the Ducks this week. People don't seem to understand that just because it's 1-AA they are not a pushover. Maybe Mich will learn from this one? You know there's tremendous talent all over the country, the big boys can't sign 'em all.

Do the pollsters even watch these games or do they rank by name. For example Auburn, they basically got beat-up. But only won by the other team, Kansas States, mistakes in the final minutes of the game. Auburn is about a 30. Tennessee got their hat handed to them and they still made the top 25. I guess thats what you get with the speculative pre-ranking of teams before the first game, ex. Michigan.

Lennie your right Louisville should be ranked ahead of Texas, and I still think Florida is getting too much love, but I guess they get a pass because they won the NC..that's fair. Tiger Educated I agree it would be a shame if LSU wins them all because they played better teams. Here's how I thought it should've looked and mind you I'm a Texas fan.

    1. USC
    2. LSU
    3. West Virginia
    4. Wisconsin
    5. Oklahoma
    6. Louisville
    7. California
    8. Florida
    9. Virginia Tech
    10. Texas

bobby #23...i think your assesment of florida is pretty accurate....i watched western kentucky move right down the field on florida...but after florida stopped them..it didn't take long at all for tebow and florida to find the endzone....i do believe that they have been given a good poll spot for what they did last year, so this week we have troy...and then we get into the "meat" of our schedule...then hopefully florida will gain respect for their spot in the polls....but i wouldn't go crowning lsu as sec champs just yet....florida will ahve something to say about it...

Take solace in the good news: LSU wins em all, they get to prove who's #1 in the NC game. The crying shame is this: If we wind up with between 3 & 5 undefeated teams at season's end, and USC & LSU are 2 of them, LSU & USC are the only ones considered for the NC. I don't see that as being fair. Now, that currently is how it is. So, for the time being, I'll live with that. But, don't expect me to like it.

Gatorstud, I was not nocking on Florida, but I think you understood me anyways. Seems like any NC gets a good spot next season no matter what including my Horns. Florida just lost lots of talent and are young but you know that. Look at were I put the Horns, man I hope they wake up before K-State. I didn't think USC looked that great over Idaho. They by head and shoulders have the best team...they should've scored that much in the first half. First game rust I guess because they weren't the only BIG school that looked a little lackluster. GO HORNS!

Based on Tech's play on Saturday, I would not have been surprised if they had fallen. Considering Michigan was ranked #5 & is now out of the polls, Tech did drop a spot compared to the other teams around them. It's early and polls are still mostly about speculation at this point. I don't know how many saw the pre-game ceremonies, but I imagine it's pretty hard to be fired up one minute, followed by several minutes of solemn, emotional reflection the next, immediately followed by the start of a game where you need to hit people hard. LSU will be more of a gauge of Tech’s abilities.

GOBLUE, I think you may have a warped perspective. I think you are referring to the PLAYER quality as opposed to the TEAM quality. Football is the quintessential team sport. A great team isn’t just loaded with talent; it’s the interaction of that talent that makes a winner in football.

Zac: If your scenario plays out, you'll know how Auburn felt in 2004. Don't fret early, though. LSU has at least one loss coming to them in the conference. You guys have a pretty easy schedule and should run the table.

Auburn, on the other hand, will be lucky to win their key games. If they crack the top 20 at the end of the year, I'll be happy.

I don’t understand the preseason poll anyway, I know there has to be a gauge that will determine who will play for the NC since there’s no playoff system, but why start a poll so early, most teams play easy to sometimes decent teams the first 3 or 4 games. I want to see OU in the top 10 but beating North Texas was not a big deal, Texas having a close game with Ark St could have just been a fluke. Not a coach by no means, but for an example the Fla St/Clemson, both teams looked to be damn good teams---so why did Fla St drop out of the top 25 and why is Clemson not in the top 25. Why not start the poll after conference play starts. Michigan starts out ranked at # 5, gets beat by a good team, but does anyone really think if they played 10 more games in a row that they would lose any of them. I don’t ..now everyone can tell me how dum this sounds.

Everyone here on this blog have made no good points...they all have been EXCELLENT points! Remember fellow college football fans that it is PEOPLE deciding these polls. Me, personally, I think it is gone be designed for USC to play for da National Title regardless on how they play! They can win all their games and not cover the point spread. They will probably be still ranked #1 which I think is silly. Yes, margin of victory still counts if not why did texas and Virgina Tech fall? But the next 2 weekend the polls are going to get shaken up with more top 25 teams playin' each other...then we will know!

The preseason poll is just a way for the D-1A fraternity to close out the non-fraternal teams, i.e., TCU, Boise, etc. It's just a way for major programs to get early positioning for the NC. Like OU-Ron said, polls shouldn't start until the first of September. Good point there too Ron about FSU/Clem, I can see why FSU dropped, but VT was favored by 24 over a much lesser opponent than Clemson, in ECU, and wins by 10 (only 10 offensive points, the 7 (off an int.) was from a bad call from punt that should have been a touch-back) and they drop a spot? I'm thinking they should have dropped more, but the pollsters want to keep them ranked high because VT is the ACC's (according to pundits)only team and they face LSU who is poised to make a run at the NC, even though they played MSU and looked like crap in the first half. Its all a conspiracy! Just like supposedly USC is the best on the whole planet when they barely got by a Vandals team.

I generally think that the pre-season polls are harmless and - for the most part - meaningless. The only time that they are bad (IMHO) is when you have multiple undefeated (or equivalently defeated) teams at the end of the season, vying for the MNC. Inevitably, one team gets left out and it's always the team that started the season with the lower/lowest ranking. Just ask Boise State, Auburn, etc.

Other than that, pre-season polls are a fun source of debate and discussion. I can't imagine not having them, but I sure wish they would be placed in a more appropriate context come the end of the season.

    Go Jackets! Go Gators!

I agree with Lennie the only was for USC to lose the #1 spot is to lose. I think they could have tight games with all their schedule and LSU blow away theirs and USC would still retain the #1 spot. USC has been good for so long that they get alot a lead way and the pollsters love them. I think USC loses one game. To me when a team is so highly touted it's almost inevitable. I think a team with a good defense and good offense could keep this team in check...I didn't say great just good IMO. Brian Cushing went out hurt any news on him? Folks take notice Clemson might not be a factor this year but if they return most of that team in '08...look out! They have alot going for them.

Clemson looses the QB, the current DE stud , the OL stud and both backs will leave regardless of eligibility. Also, Ford will be gone too. Next year will be rather dim for them, their time is now.

I think Wisconsin is underated. I think Tennessee is getting some good lovin' from the pollsters. They should be out of the top 25 while Clemson and Boston College should be on solid. Lennie give me the score for ou and Miami. How many times do you think Calais Campbell will get to Bradford? Do you think your running backs are good blockers because they will probably have to help your tackle out. Charles and Ogbannaya will have to help Hills against Tommy Blake that dude is a true pass rusher. I say UT 17 and TCU 10. ou 20 and Miami 10. The ou and Miami game is a guess because I havn't seen either play yet. I do think that this will be a good barometer for how good Bradford will do. I think we can all agree that there is stark contrast between the Miami and UNT defenses.

Great 1st week. LSU looks strong and played better than any other team. So Cal used alot of reserves and did not perform as well as expected. Oklahoma, Ohio State, Florida and Cal all played well. It's too early to make any great inferenences as to who is great and who is not - so we'll leave that for a little later on.
I'll cut Michigan some slack as their loss was overrated - as is everything else in college football. That Appalachian State team was the Division II Champs and better than many Division I teams really are. In fact, many teams played worse than Michigan did last Saturday. Would not surprise me at all if the Wolves don't rise up and beat Oregon this coming Saturday. As for Notre Dame - I actually picked them against the line this last week. Me of all people. What was I thinking? It's Notre Dame and Charlie Weis is the most overrated coach in America. How did I forget? Well, I actually thought that Claussen would receive better than mop-up duty. Well, that's why Weis is the genius and I am not. I think I'll just stick to betting against Notre Dame in every game for the rest of this year. That was pathetic! Weis was able to win with Willingham's guys, but now that he has most of his own, it looks like it isn't gonna be so easy.

    Bobby:

Makes no difference who gets injured at USC. Cushing will be replaced by Josh Tatum - if he stays out. There is the next All-American behind every single position. That is why So Cal can be rated #1. It's a long season and every team is gonna suffer many different injuries throughout the season. That's why the BIG BOYZ usually end up dominating the top end of the polls at the end of every season. As great as Cushing is - is absence will barely be felt! Even if Booty went down, it wouldn't even matter, as Mark Sanchez would step in and be the next Heisman hopeful. Don't worry about the Trojans. Worry about Bill Callahan and the Nebraska Cornhuskers - as the Trojans have two weeks to prepare for that team. I sure would not want to be a Cornhusker fan on that day. Trojans 35 Nebraska 10.

Tommie don't take #33 as an insult. I liked USC up until Leinart. It's all my opinion. If I eluded that USC would be weaker because of Cushing than I misworded. All I was saying is touted teams havew a hard time living up to the hype. USC is always stacked with all- Americans so it's not crazy to say that they can lose. IMO they will lose one. USC is dang good no denying. And I do feel sorry for Nebraska it's cold up there. It will be a good game.

Lennie, you're right neither Spiller or Davis are seniors, but I suggesting that given their awesomeness that it would be in their best interest to come our early, especially if the both get over a 1000 yards.
Tommie, USC is riding the FSU wave my friend; enjoy while it lasts - we rode it for 14 seasons - lets see if the Condoms can top that mark! Also, you're right the loss to ASU was just that and many, many teams (Texas, FSU, VT, perhaps USC (first half play) definitely ND) would have lost against them. But it is week one and that's why you schedule a patsy, but not the 2-time D-1AA champ - doh!
I think Miami D can keep it tight and perhaps eek out a win. OU won easily against a patsy, and the Miami D is flat awesome again! Miami 23 - OU 17; the spread is 10.5 to OU.
LSU wins comfortably against with great D on both sides. Low score as both offenses are sluggish, LSU 19 - VT 10.
Wake over Nebraska! Baby! No score but Wake will win on the road! Ok I'm smoking crack, but i can dream.
Lasaly, Florida must watch out for Troy, they are just as fast, but depth will hurt them. Most of hte kids at Troy are from the same place UF gets their kids.

I think the game against OU and UM in 2009 will be more of a game than 09/08. I think on 09/08 OU will win 31-17. LSU will beat VT 21 - 17, I think. I think NU will beat USC 28 -24.

I agree that any team can get beat on any day. I still can't get over the loss to UCLA last year. That was mind blowin'. Michigan just lost one also. No, I only hit 60% against the line on all games this past week. Nothing seemed to go as expected - but it's early. Any team that turns it over about four times in any game is gonna lose.

WarEagleA, I was just about to ask Tommy T the same question. By the way, I thought the 2004 situation involving Auburn was a travesty. It stunk, pure and simple. I wouldn't wish that on any team. As for WVU's schedule, maybe it's not as tough as LSU's or Auburn's, but it has still been ranked by Rivals as being in the Top 25. It's certainly more challenging than last year's.

Back to Tommy T!!! How ya be?!? Did you actually get situated in KS, or are you on to something else? I thought Appy St played one hell of a game; they earned the win like the champions they are. I know they're "Div-2", but I didn't see this as being the upset of the century. What are your thoughts? (BTW, USC looked incredibly relaxed against ID.)

Now they have a long ways to go as a program but I wish them well, I always enjoy watching a team rise to start competing with the big boys. It is great that even though schedules do not factor in any longer, Robert and OU's AD are gone schedule some good games. In 2008 OU gots the Bearcats at home and the Huskies on the road. Lennie Collins, do your seriously believe the OU can put 31 points up on Miami's defense? In the past 25 games for Miami, only twice has a team put up 31 or more points on us. I believe it will be a close low scoring game. Can't wait to see it.

I do not want Miami to get blown out because of Coach Randall Shannon! Let the record reflex Hurricane of Tampa the only teams I can't stand are: #1 texas, #2 Notre Dame, and #3 USC because most of the college announcers think that USC can "beat" NFL teams and you probably think as well as I do that that ain't true! I'm hoping this Oklahoma game will be another Ucla (1999 I believe). A statement game showing that we're back. The Canes have alot to prove and hopefully will have that chip on their shoulder, and not the fake chip we saw versus Louisville last year. I think we have a legit shot at pulling off the upset, and I'm sure it will be a close game. Oklahome will not put up 31 on our defense. Can't wait til sat.

I had to go with OK because the game's in Norman. However, if it turns out to be a low scoring game, that favors Miami. I think it'll be close no mater how you slice it; neither will win by more than 3. However, if both teams score more than 3 TD's, that favors OK; below 20 pts each, that favors Miami. I can agree with Lenny's OK score; I still say Miami keeps it real close.

UGA IV. Don't ever post another comment. Jinx or not, how could you man? Personally, I don't think South Carolina can stop the DAWGS' offense. If the defense plays with the same intensity, we will get them. One thing about South Carolina and Spurrier they love to put the ball in the flats and let the backs and receivers get yardage upfield. With the speed and lateral movement the DAWGS have on D this year, I don't see that happening. You can count on Spurrier pulling some junk plays, a little play action with a bomb to the post, and at least 1 reverse. Maybe a pitch out and throwback to the quarterback. The guy is a flake. We will be ready for them. GO DAWGS!!

Everybody who is ragging on TN has got it wrong. Did you watch the game? California is a VERY good team. Did you see the speed in that game? I had to put it on Tivo slomo just to keep up with it! TN was in the game until about 10 minutes left in 4th. 2 seconds later on the Ainge sack and that's a pass, not a fumble. I will have to say that TN needs an asswhipping for even kicking to Jackson. Nonetheless, TN is a good team. Cal is a very good team.

Hey, Lennie, the hitting has been on ESPN, where Cincy & OR St had nearly battled to a close one at the half. Solid "D" on the part of both clubs. Cincy may be well ahead, but in fairness to the Beavers, I think they had a good FG called bad, and there was interference on that punt where Cincy got the TO - led to a TD. In fact, it seemed like they were getting all the calls. Had Cincy not had their own problems with communication between C & QB (3 or 4 bad snaps), this one might have been a lot worse for the Beavers.

I don't have a clue what's going on with Louisville's "D" at Pappa Johns. WVU only managed 38 against them last year, and here's Mid TN dropping 42 on them. Had the Cardinal "D" not shut em out in the 3rd qtr, this might have been a lot more embarrassing; i.e. to the tune of Appy/MI.

as a Mich alum I am not surprised at the loss or the drop. It seems pretty routine. Very disappointing. Frotunately, this loss did not affect their uncanny academic rankings (to ten in just about everything, particulary business, medicine, law, and engineering; all the important stuff). Our football team may screw our leisure time and again, but we as alums are still wealthier and more accomplished professionaly than any other school (except for Berekely) with Top 25 football teams. That makes losses much easier to tolerate.

I agree with you, Lennie. I don't like to hear people say, "You beat them because they had a down year," or "There starting QB was out," or "Their best defender was suspended," or "Their *2nd Coming* transfer from FL was caught cheating on a test." (Sorry, GH, I couldn't help myself. I'll make it up to you, promise.)

Like you, I want my team to be successful against a challenging schedule. That doesn't mean my team should face the Top 12 teams in the country. Rather, they should face a good mix between say 1 & 40, which involves a variety of players, schemes, coaching philosophies, and environments. A team which shows it can be successful against the better programs under any conditions (weather, diversity, controversy, etc.), that's the team you crown champion. More often than not there are at least 3-5 schools by seasons end who could be arguably worthy of that distinction, not to mention the many more who are just plain winners.

Lennie I can agree with your to be the best you gotta beat the best is a good way to approach life. Now when talking college football...I don't think we see eye to eye. What if you lose to one of those games. Next year Miami, Cincinnati, aTm, Texas...all potentially teams that could beat you. I don't like what Mack's doing but I think I'd rather go the route of play some good teams, some mediocres, and some cream puffs. Go undefeated and try to get in that way. If you lose just one everybody has to lose except one in order for your one loss to be overlooked and then go to sos to see who can go to the NC which would benefit you. My main thought is it's a shame when a good team doesn't get to go because of one loss and that one loss they could've won had some things gone their way or played a little better. No doubt some of the ou games will be much watched and talked about.

Something I forgot to mention in Post 87, the vast majority of teams are in conference. While a few get to pick within which conference they play, none get to pick which teams are in their conference. Look at all of the conferences as they currently exist. Each has their best teams, and each has their worst teams. Some have more "best" or at least "better" teams, some have more of the worst teams. The point is, that which appears to be ideal, may not always be. A team has to play the hand they've been dealt.

As big of a VT fan I am, they are not playing quality football and will be lucky to be ranked between 15 and 20 come Monday. IMO Oklahoma should be #2. They seem to be the only team that's ranked in the top 10 who has come out and handled business both games,1st quarter to 4th quarter.

    post 93 bobby,

yeh that is a nice win but please do me a favor and make sure VT kicks clemsons ass again this year because im getting so sick of all the clemson fans around here acting all cocky because they beat fla state last week...but i see u dont think too much of LSU and we play them come week 4...what do you think will happen...i got 7 tickets to that game in the mail yesterday and its gonna be a big one considering im flying to baton rouge all the way from lexington SC...well the airport is in columbia but u think south carolina will beat LSU?

CnF...I don't know. LSU looks good. I haven't see SC play. Because SC rise in rankings has been recent and if I literally had money on the game i'd probably go with LSU. Not gonna lie my friend. Tell you what though, I'd like to see SC pull it off. Not because I dislike LSU but because I like pulling for the underdogs. Clemson will get by VT easily unless we just haven't seen the real VT yet. I'm still not completely sold on LSU so SC could do it.

FINALLY SOMEBODY IS ON MY SIDE! i dont see why everybody thinks it is somehow physically impossible to beat LSU...i am pretty sure that it could happen...we may not have beaten them since 1994 but its time...just think of in 2005, nobody though we even stood a chance against tennessee or florida...turns out we beat tennessee for the first time in skool history in koxville and we beat florida for the first time since 1939...those were some of the biggest upsets i can think of in 2005...i beleive the same thing can happen with LSUexcept this yeer our football team is better than it was in 2005 and 2006...2007 is the yeer for the gamecocks

C N F SC 101, I'm not saying it'll happen, but nobody gave WVU a chance in Atlanta against GA 2 years ago. The only reason for SC not beating LSU is LSU not letting it happen. AND, that don't mean it won't, either.
