A few former coaches are on there. Also, former SEC commissioner Roy Kramer, his predecessor and former USA Olympic organizer Harvey Schiller are there. And previous Auburn AD David Housel, who was forced out after the infamous 2003 Petrino affair.
Don't they still have the Master Coach's poll?

Spare me the SEC love angle...Last year, with Howard Schnellenberger's sorry arse on there, he had LSU ranked #18 in his final poll...
Eight-freaking-teen...
18...
?Diez y ocho?
Seriously?
The guy got brought down here long ago by a high-powered LSU Booster who promised a legit shot at the head job, and then didn't deliver...He's never forgotten the sleight...

The Master Coaches Poll (http://www.mcspoll.com/poll.htm) is in its third year. They just added Legendary Nebraska Coach Tom Osborne.
Their first poll will be released next Sunday (Sept 16) after the Master Coaches have been able to evaluate the play all the top teams in the country over the first three weeks of play. In my opinion, this is what makes the Master Coaches Poll better than all the other polls. They actually get the copies of the games on DVD's and are able to analyze the play of each team. In addition, they have a conference call each week to discuss the play of the teams from the previous week.
Here is a great article I found in the South Bend Tribune about the poll:

These polls and rankings are so weak and fixed. The 'writers' East Coast mentality/favoritism has happened for so long it's a pathetic joke. How many of them have had lunch west of the Mississippi or a 100 miles radius from NY? Their friends and families must get great seats to those ranked.
Their reluctance to rank many even in the Pac 10 speaks volumes of this because of the load of crap they throw now when Erickson went to a team there; suddenly it's a competitive division. And their all 'shocked' at the whipping of an over-rated program in Michigan by a team they now will be watching Oregon yet that program has been consistent for years of their cars could only coss the Mississippi.
I say instead of the 'writers' voting on who should be there, leave it to the fans and leave out the 'writers' - they can be the voyuers they are and report on events, not make events themselves. Harris is a joke and has a history as such with its screwed up results (especially at year end).
This should be a national crusade and most definately not lost on a small blog.

Rock: Thanks for the good info. The Master Coaches poll is a good idea that should be given more consideration. There's no way that the sportswriters are able to watch anything more than a handful of games, and you know the coaches see even less. I like the fact that all of these coaches were well-tenured in their positions--no journey-man coaches.
Wouldn't you like to listen in to that conference call every week?
