StubHub's Top 25 College Football Rivalries
The boys at StubHub have put together this year's edition of the Top 25 College Football Rivalries based on ticket price/demand.
1 USC at Notre Dame 2 Ohio State at Michigan 3 Oklahoma vs. Texas 4 UCLA at USC 5 Tennessee at Alabama 6 Georgia at Florida 7 Texas at Texas A&M 8 Alabama at Auburn 9 Tennessee at Florida 10 Michigan at Michigan State
Grain of salt, this list is based upon StubHub's ticket demand, but it's nice to see capitalism at work.
For comparison, the 2006 StubHub rankings are online as well.

texas - oklahoma....a "nut rippin" good time from what i hear...
rivalry based on ticket sales, huh.......next it will be determined by hotel vacancy...and restaraunt wait times.....how bout determining it by how many scalpers are outside the stadiums.....or how many port-a-johns are used at a venue....
go gators...and hokies (bye-bye boston college)

#5: Agreed. Also, since they are rating ticket DEMAND, there's a natural statistical bias against larger stadiums with more tickets available. Also, how does stubhub account for season ticket sales and the proportion they represent?
Sorry - I'm kind of a math geek.
Furthermore, any listing of rivalries failing to include Florida-Florida State in the top 10 is incomplete. :-)

1) I don't know about ticket demand being a bias against large stadiums..(look at tOSU vs Mi, both well over 100k)
2) I think that by definition, a GREAT rivalry should be a game that is important enough that people who aren't diehard CFB fans will still watch it. I'm a Big10 guy, but I always watch Ala-Ten, OU-Tx, and Fl-FlSt. To me, that makes them great rivalry games.
3) I'm sure that Army-Navy is a big rivalry to the cadets at those schools, but who else in the country really cares about the outcome of that game?
4) A rivalry game should be one whose outcome is a determining factor in Conference or BCS standings. tOSU-Mich determines the Big10 Championship probably 8 out of every 10 years. How often has USC-UCLA game been this important in the last 20 years?5) Can we lose the ringtone guy? I really like that this forum is usually flame and spam free.

I guess I should have actually read the article before I posted:
It's not even close to being accurate, and to judge this weeks rivalry games against games that wont occur for another month makes the results totally biased.
next article please, Kevin, bring on the matchups!

Lennie: If you rank them on fan assaults, Georgia-Florida will be the top rivalry. People die down there. There have been a few deaths in recent years.
*Yes, I know that only like one death has been attributed to the game/party, but the media just loves to link any tragedy to the game.gatorstud said:

There is only a diference of 30,000 tickets between #1 and #2....but hey!! despite having the largest football stadium in America, we are still #2!!!
Last year there was a local sports radio show giving away some OSU Mich tickets and they were going to give the tickets to the "best" Michigan fan......The guy who won, spent many hours outdoors in his shorts on a day when the wind-chill was about 10 degrees, and he was running along one of the busiest roads in Grand Rapids, Michigan........I was wondering if he painted himself blue, or if he was maybe frostbit from head to toe????

USC vs. ND is still considered a rivalry??? Seems kind of one-sided. Seems like Texas vs. Oklahoma would have a higher demand than that considereing the Texas state fair is at the same time and would be drawing in even more Texas and Oklahoma fans.

Gatorstud: Ha ha, the media is a joke. I think that every crime in Jacksonville that weekend is somehow attributed to the game--and the game is probably the biggest contributer of crime--if you count outdoor urinators as perps...
The GA-FL rivalry is rich in bloviation from the school presidents, Machen and Adams. (Use your Pee-Wee Herman accent here) "Could you please stop calling it a cocktail party!"
Jesus! Do you really think that if you call it by another name it's going to be any different?
OU-Ron: The ripping of a man's scrotum definitely scores a high rating for creativity, but wait: Judges ruling... No, it didn't occur during game week. No flag on the play! :-)GA Boy said:

WE Atl
The biggest crime at the cocktail party is the assualt and battery the Gators usually put on the DAWGS. This weekend will be vehicular homicide cause we are going to run over their asses!!
Sorry about the bad metaphor but both my bosses are FLA fans and I am trying to do anything to convince myself that we have a chance this weekend and I won't have to put up with another year of mockery.GO DAWGS!!

heres the deal with rivalry games:
what makes a rivalry so great is it being intrastate.
when you see fans of your most bitter rival everyday at work, school, etc. it adds sooo much more to the rivalry. it adds an element that rivalries like Michigan/Ohio St. and USC/Notre Dame can never have.
these are the two i have experienced first hand:alabama/auburn - the biggest one
florida/florida st.

I agree to some extent. Especially on your Iron Bowl rivalry. But, if you live in the ATL you can have a rivalry with just about any team. There are so many transplants in ATL that there are plenty of people that you work with to talk junk the week of the game with.
Just ask War Eagle ATL.GO DAWGS!!

This is a weird thread. I mean, using ticket sales to determine the best rivalries "this year". It makes no sense. Rivalries are years in the making. Different schools' AD's have arguments with each other; opposing coaches grew up hating each other; schools' presidents bet things like hams or barrels of honey against the other schools. There are even axes, jugs, and a wide assortment of trophies to be played for between sets of rival schools. Yet, here we are basing it on this year's ticket sales. That's nuts!!!
There are tons of rivalries out there. But the ones that stick in my mind the most (from as far back as when I was in grade school) were OK/TX, MI/OSU, UCLA/USC, and ND/Everybody. From where I'm standing, though many decent rivals have come to the forefront, it doesn't look as if all that much has changed.

Hey Zac(Comment #31) Have you heard of supply and demand? Money talks and you know what walks. There are so many opinions on which is the "best" rivalry in College Football why not see which rivalry game fans put out the most cash. Hey maybe next year they will do it by tv ratings! They got my home viewing vote: Oklahoma and texas. Why pay when you can stay!

Lennie, lets apply your recommendation to the games played last year on ESPN. By your own suggestion, the greatest rivalries last year involved the circle jerk between Louisville, WVU, and Rutgers. Those 3 night ESPN games were 3 of the top most watched college football games on ESPN in their history. However, obviously, those are hardly the greatest rivalries in college football. AL/Auburn, for example, is far bigger. AND, if you ask any Pitt or WVU fan which team they look forward to their team playing, Louisville & Rutgers won't be the answer. The only thing a lot of ticket sales, or high TV ratings will tell you, is what people preferred to watch at that point in time, not for all time.

Zac(Comment #33)I would love to see ABC, CBS, and FoxSports most watched rivarly games. There are plenty of great rivarlry games. Which one(s) is a matter of choice. Now if you ask me which one I will go pay to see: Oklahoma and Texas. Which one I make sure I see every year: Oklahoma ad Texas! Now all time...Kansas and Nebraska? Nooooo!

So stub says those are the best, based on ticket price? I say bullshit and that is one more example of making statistics say anything you want them to. Do you think they considered population density or lack thereof? Stub would like nothing more than notre dame against michigan for NC.
What the hey, a scalper is nothing but a low down scalper. Stub is nothing but a scalper. Stub is lot like those crack dealers wearing "I need tickets" signs at your alma mater as a big game brews. Stub will never be respectable and their opinion will never count for stinkola.Autigerman said:

What a strange way to rate a rivalry.
Seems to me that if you could get a ticket to a game means that someone has to be willing to sell the ticket.
I have had many many people offer me five times what i payed for my Auburn Alabama tickets no way im selling them.
USC Notre Dame tickets probably sold out because they were getting 20 dollars a piece.
