How much did that win cost, coach?
The USA Today steals a page from the Coaches Hot Seat playbook in rolling out the cost-per-win for Division I-A teams.
The rationale is simple - divide the number of wins by the coach's salary - to determine the cost per win.
Cost Per Win for 2007 DI-A Teams (as compiled by USA Today)
Rank -- Team -- Coach -- Salary -- Wins -- Cost Per Win
1 -- Minnesota Tim Brewster $1,000,000 1 $1,000,000
2 - Alabama Nick Saban $3,503,200 6 $583,867
3 - Duke Ted Roof $544,286 1 $544,286
4 - Syracuse Greg Robinson $1,054,172 2 $527,086
5 - Southern Methodist Phil Bennett $517,857 1 $517,857
6 - Iowa Kirk Ferentz $3,030,000 6 $505,000
7 - Baylor Guy Morriss $1,204,818 3 $401,606
8 - Florida International Mario Cristobal $381,076 1 $381,076
9 - Florida Urban Meyer $3,383,500 9 $375,944
10 - Washington Tyrone Willingham $1,470,276 4 $367,569
Of the ten most expensive cost-per-win coaches, three have been fired (Roof, Bennett, and Morriss) and three are headed to mid-level bowl games (Saban, Ferentz, and Meyer).
Meanwhile, the two coaches in the BCS National Championship clocked in at $215,182 per win (Jim Tressel, Ohio State) and $165,091 per win (Les Miles, LSU).
So who is the biggest "value" in cost-per-win?
1- Bowling Green Gregg Brandon $183,909 8 $22,989
2 - Miami (Ohio) Shane Montgomery $144,225 6 $24,038
3 - Ball State Brady Hoke $169,634 7 $24,233
4 - Western Kentucky David Elson $179,600 7 $25,657
5- Central Michigan Butch Jones $265,850 8 $33,231

TE, I was traveling last week and catching up this week, but congratulations on the SEC Title. And to think, West Va. was complaining about their QB being hurt while playing a 3 TD underdog and LSU sucks it up and wins the toughest conference in the nation with a second team QB. That was a great performance and I will be pulling for those Tigers against tOSU come January. Having the NC not only come from the SEC but from our half of it would be a great way to start the year. Also ejoyed the very STRAIGHT FORWARD way that Coach Miles put all those rumors to rest. You know that any man would love to coach at his alma mater, but I'd like to think that three years in Cajun country has grown on Les a little. Now we can settle down and get ready for some real rivalry seasons, especially with Nutt staying "in conference" and Tubberville staying on the plains. I just hate that we have to wait 9 months before the first kick of the 2008 season. Go Tigers.......

BigTide,
Thanks for the comments...
Yeah, you can talk about USC, UWV, Florida, Oregon, and all the rest that lost their starters this past season...
We're 2-0 in games where we lost Matt Flynn, and we throw for a higher completion percentage, far greater TD/INT ratio, and we're far more multiple in terms of our offensive scheme.
You guys need that win in Indy. We need it for the rest of the SEC. Arkansas needs to pull it out in the Cotton. Auburn needs a post-game W, too...and of course I want us to win...
We need to finish up with a donut in the -L column at the end of bowl season...I think Florida & Jawja will hold up their end of the bargain in the East, and we have a very realistic shot of finishing undefeated in bowls, with 9 teams eligible!
What a year for the SEC...Can you imagine how big those cuts will be in Destin this summer when Mike Slive divvies up the revenue chunks to member schools?
They add up the TV contracts, bowl payouts, NCAA Hoops Tourney money, and then dole it all out...With two BCS Bowls, 7 other bowls, and the rest, it's going to be a HUGE payday in Florida this summer...

Damn you USA Today. We've been working on this at RankThatCoach.com for weeks. Luckily our list seems to be more accurate than theirs, since Charlie Weiss is the worst:

Big Tide (Post 10), I've been blogging on this site for 2 seasons now. My Mountaineers and the Big East have taken their share of licks. But, for the most part, respect has really never been an issue.
Then, the unthinkable happens. WVU is within a win of going to the NC, and they blow it. Your comment, has probably been about as bad as it has gotten on fanblogs. However, on some other sites, I can't believe what some people are posting. I'm not just talking about the "usual" profanity. I'm talking about openly advocating threats of bodily harm to some of the players. Some claiming to be Mountaineer fans have discussed chastisement, retribution, and how it should be carried out. It's seriously crackers out there.
That having been said, put Bama in the same shoes as with WVU Saturday night (No doubt, it's happened.). My question to you is this: Following a similar circumstance, have Bama fans actually gone so far as to threatened the lives of some of the players, not to mention openly advocating what amounts to capital punishment???

Zac, my first boss out of college used to say constantly that the "Good times take care of themselves, it's the bad times that you find out where you really stand."
My comments were in response to the stange comments Coach Rod made to the press after the game. He was visibly shaken (was he crying??) and he looked like a guy searching for answers. I think he should have stepped up to that podium and said, "This loss today was on me. I was outcoached and we are going to learn from this, etc. and if anyone got a beef with this loss I'm the guy you need to talk to..." I feel for the guy and feel for the true fans, not the crazy a**holes out there talking violence or whatever. With that said, what LSU has accomplished this season is getting left behind. Both of their losses, while to suspect teams, were in overtime and they stepped it up and dismantled Tennessee with their back up playing. That is pretty strong stuff. Once they put the stroke on Ohio State I hope we can file this crazy season away.
Good luck to the Mounties and the rest of the Big East.

Big Tide, thanks for the response. I wasn't taking issue with your comments; just wanted to clarify that.
BTW, that 1st boss of yours must have been some individual.
What everyone witnessed during the post-game press conference was a confused man. Rodriguez knew his team was better. According to all accounts, they'd practiced hard and prepared well. No WVU HC has ever had to motivate his team to play Pitt; those kids were indeed motivated to play this game. Why they played so poorly and Pitt played so well is as much a mystery to me as it is to anyone. Whether Rodriguez's comments made any sense or not, no doubt, he and his team will learn from this.
As for LSU, I dutifully admit, they've played one of the toughest schedules in the country. They fought through 7 ranked teams and 2 OT losses to get where they are. Still, they have 2 losses. I find this especially interesting, given the # of comments against a play-off system, for this very reason. Assuming LSU beats OSU, and this can certainly happen, can you or anyone tell me the last time a team with 2 losses won the NC?

Zac #19, not in my lifetime if ever. I'm not even sure there is a National Champion this year in the true sense of the word. Somebody will take home the crystal, but no team has put themselves head and shoulders above the rest. If Hawaii beats Georgia and becomes this year's Boise State they've even got a solid argument. The kids don't make the schedules. They practive hard and play just like everyone else. I don't think Hawaii will beat Georgia, but if they do, how do you look those guys in the face and say, "Sorry you aren't deserving of the crystal." The system sucks. That much is clear.

I think I just found my new best friend. BIG TIDE #20} finally a SEC guy like me gets it. The question should be does Ohio St. or Lsu deserve a shot at Hawaii. My poll goes 1. hawaii 2. georgia 3. kansas 4. lsu 5. vtech 6. OU 7. Missouri 8. Ohio state 9. Boise State 10. West Virginia 17. usc 22. Illinois
Is Illini in the the ROSE the biggest fraud you ever seen? Put Boise State in that damn Rose Bowl so USC would have to play em. THeyve been ducken the Broncos since they turned D1. 10-2 is better than 9-3.coondawg1 said:

oh for the love of God, dont get me started on that tub of sh@# Notre Dead coach. You know he got alot of #1 all-american recruits, but i think he mistook them for a cheeseburger, fries, and a shake. That Claussen kid, he be wearin a headset on any WAC team.

#30 na man He/She left had to go to the theropist/ hypnotist/pharmicist or back to the padded cell whatever.
Boise St Sux on Michigan like Bill Clinton's intern. Hawaii would be 1-11 in a BCS conference especially the ACC 0-12 in the XII,SEC or B10/11
UL Monroe is Better than all the teams in the WAC and so is N Texas, LA Laf, Rice & Duke
All joking aside

Bevo Boy I dunno maybe so, I beleive he returned late last night, under an alias. The guy is probably not really crazy, probably just likes to stir stuff up and was having a bad day or trip. If you'll go back & read them, they started around 1600 hrs and were kinda okay and as the night wore on they became something different, heck by 0200 hrs that had transformed into something entirely different. He probably read them the following day and realized that he had screwed up, heck everybody makes mistakes.
He probably brewed up some bad mushrooms or something or overindulged in liquid spirits
who knows, we must learn to forgive
I hope he is reading this,Its ok man it aint that bad.You probably didnt mean all those bad things you said on here
God Bless Coondog and Ms Coondog-if she exists

Alabama's a perfect example...Who cares that it cost half a million per win...I believe that all season tickets there now require either PSL's or donations over and above the cost of the ticket itself, resulting in multiple millions in revenue-after overhead-per home game...
I know a few years ago-prior to the West Upper Expansion and the new loge level suites it added to Tiger Stadium, it was said that for every home game, we netted over $3,000,000.00
That was just from concessions & tickets...
$21,000,000.00 per season to the AD, just from the gate and popcorn/cokes...
Add in the TV revenue, officially licensed products, bowl game revenues, and the other programs that turn a profit (at LSU, Baseball actually does, though Basketball was $800K in the red last year...Damn you, John Brady!), and these AD's typically have $40,000,000.00 budgets.
With the football programs being the tail that wags those dogs, 10% dedicated to the architect of that tail is not all that bad an investment, if you spend that 10% of the right person.
In Alabama's case, they've hired a fine architect. South Carolina, LSU, Auburn, Florida, UGA, the same thing...
Now, others? That remains to be seen...But I've never had an issue with those salaries...
