Which teams have open 2008 schedule dates?

In the coming weeks, we'll start going through the 2008 college football schedules for each team as the dates are locked in, but -- in the meantime -- here's a quick rundown of which teams still have open dates on their schedule.

As best we can determine, the following FBS (DI-A) teams still need to add games to play a 12-game schedule.

NEED TO ADD THREE GAMES

Louisiana-Monroe - From the look of things, the Warhawks are probably going to end up with some pretty decent paydays by vitrue of having several open dates to fill and a reputation for going on the road for one-off game.

NEED TO ADD TWO GAMES

Arkansas - Rumored to be negotiating with ULM and Tulsa, which would be interesting
Army
Central Michigan
Eastern Michigan
Kent State
Rutgers
Tulane
Western Michigan

NEED TO ADD ONE GAME

Alabama
Boston College
Brigham Young - Wanted a marquee game but may not get it because of date inflexibility
Georgia Tech
Idaho
Illinois
Kentucky - Looking for a home-and-home series with upper tier "midwestern" program
Louisiana-Lafayette
Louisiana State
Louisiana Tech
Louisville
Miami FL - May be looking to schedule Louisiana Tech, but LaTech wants a 2-for-1 (again)
North Texas - - Wanted a game with Tulsa but may not happen, but GHs want a bigger payday
Northern Illinois
Ohio
Oklahoma - Wanted a marquee game but may not get it because of date inflexibility
Southern Miss
Syracuse
Troy
Tulsa
UAB
UNLV
Virginia Tech - Waiting to confirm ACC dates, but looking for a home game
Wisconsin

GAMES MOVING TO NEUTRAL SITE
Colorado @ FSU - In the final legal stages of moving from Tallahassee to Jacksonville

That's all I've got for now. We'll recap the 2008 schedules as some of the dates start to firm up. And if you hear anything, of course email the tips (at) fanblogs (dot) com email address.

Interesting topic Kev- Arkansas is playing Texas and I heard rumors of games with A&M. They should probably try to schedule some old SWC rivals in addition to their SEC games that would be a blast
    TCU
    Texas Tech
    Houston
    Texas A&M
Even SMU, Rice or Baylor would be cool to play old opponents

I don’t know about you guys, but I see the potential for some decent match-ups.

BYU wants a “marquee” match-up? IL needs a dance partner. I say BYU/IL. If not them, how about WI?

KY’s wishing for a home/home with an “upper tier” mid-westerner. Be careful what you wish for; OK just might oblige you. Bradford vs Woodson, I can see it now.

AL & Troy both need a game? There it is folks; the next best thing to AL/Auburn.

I would normally invite S MS to take a crack at the BE via Syracuse, but a better game would be S MS/BC.

VA Tech is looking for money making home game, just like Rodriguez did with E WA in 2005. (Probably not LSU, right?) They can take their pick; there’s a whole lotta “patsies” waiting for an opportunity to make the Hokies look bad. BUT, if they really wanted a game, how about them thar Razor Backs, or right next door, WI? So, they’d have to reciprocate with an away game; at least they’d be good ones.

Miami, almost the same as VA Tech, except no OK. Some good possibilities: AL, AR, BYU, IL, KY, LSU, Louisville, Rutgers, S MS, Syracuse, WI. (Relax, C-Dogg; WVU may not ever want to play OK again after tonight.)

There are lots of possibilities for these teams to have complete schedules. It’s all in the knowing how, not just the scheduling, but the monetary negotiating…

@ALL - Please don't post schedules on this thread. They are coming, I promise, but posting incomplete schedules without dates doesn't really help. Let's get them in ink, then we'll break 'em down. :)

@JZNole - If I'm not mistaken, FSU is signed for Colorado, UF, penciled with Western Carolina and finalizing Middle Tennessee State. As I understand, they do NOT have any more open dates. I'll try to confirm that with Andrew.

@Tomcat - It will never happen, but I would love to have the SWC back in place. Any games that move that agenda, I'm all for it. Viva la SWC!

@kershawdw - That's the word on the street. Miami may have sealed it's fate a few years back when it did agree to make a trip to the middle of nowhere Louisiana.

As it stands now, the Alabama & Oklahoma open dates do not line up. That's not to say it couldn't change, but.... I understand that OU was hot & heavy to get a marquee game, so I think the Sooners would be interested.

There had been some discussion of Louisville - Oklahoma, but I think that has petered out.

Zac: Doubtful that neither Alabama nor Auburn would schedule Troy anytime soon. It'a virtually all risk, no reward. They're already top dogs in the state. Why risk losing to a school that's gradually demonstrating that they can play?

If you have to play a gut in-state 1A game, go with Alabama-Birmingham (UAB).

FSU with their (possible) 2nd straight nuetral-site game. (clap, clap) Traveling for the Noles isn't so bad if only half the team is eligible to make the trip. (Okay, that was just plain wrong)

Some of these nuetral site games with their big paydays are looking more and more attractive. I see it becoming more of a trend in the next few years with scheduling being as complicated as it is. It much easier to ink one game as opposed to a home/away tandem. It's really a viable alternative to match up top tier programs from different regions who rarely if ever play.

    From the rumor mill:

LSU's working on a home-and-home with Colorado State...

Also, Associate AD Verge Ausberry, in charge of our scheduling, offered a home-and-home with USC getting the first year in Los Angeles to Pete Carroll, he of the soundbite, "We'll play any team, anytime, anywhere."

Word is that Petey AP Trophy turned it down...

We're working on getting confirmation on that...

I think Kansas is contacting as many elementary schools as possible to try and stregthen their schedule. Unfortunately, most of them are looking for stronger competition, and will schedule high school teams over Kansas. What a shame that Hawaii and Kansas are even being considered in the final BCS showdown. Missouri proved it deserved to have made it. Kansas will get absolutely slaughtered in the Orange Bowl.

Tomcat....Arkansas and A&M are scheduled to play each other starting in 2009. They inked a 6-8 year deal to play at Jerry Jones's new stadium.

Also, I read a couple of weeks ago rumors that Army may have backed out of their game with A&M for 2008 but I can't find it anywhere in print to verify that. If I find it I'll pass it along.

Looking like UT-Chattanooga Kev. At least that is what the tallahassee democrat is claiming. Also it appears FSU will cancel the labor day game, the article in the democrat alluded to this being due to the recent scandel (bobby said he doesn't want to play it) and the fact our team looks to be perhaps WORSE next year becuase of said scandel.

    So for labor day?
    Clemson and ?????
Not Wake, Duke, or BC (who would watch?)
Not VT they are afraid of competetion.
Not Miami they backed out already.
UVA, UNC, NC State have a more regional backing then the acc would look for in such a game...
Georgia Tech? Doesn't seem likely.. Not a good way to break in a new coach.

I guess I like UVA the best for the game I guess.

@FSU_Fan - Yeah, I think you are correct. I was going from memory, and -- well, my memory ain't wait it used to be. (If I could only remember where I put my Ginko!)

As far as the Labor Day game, I don't think the ACC has set that schedule, but I did read Bobby's interview this week where he alluded that he would like to get out of the conference rotation for that first game of the season.

I'll have to go back through the archives for when the ACC swapped FSU/Miami for FSU/Clemson on Labor Day at the request of (as I recall) both FSU and Miami as well as ABC. Again, my memory sucks - but - I seem to recall that FSU was only guaranteed in that game for three or four years, then the ACC could determine for the remainder of the ABC contract.

In the past Bobby said the Labor Day game was good for FSU for recruiting. As much exposure as possible. But I guess when up to 36 players are suspended for (2.6?????) games. It could be bad exposure.

FSU_Fan - How can you say VT is afraid of competition??? In the last couple of years they've opened with USC a couple years ago. And played LSU in week 2 this year.

I'm a Hokie Hater, but they will play anyone, except us!! We were at the "intense rival" stage when they carpetbagged the ACC! Funny, 2 former big east teams playing for the ACC title this year. Not a knock on the conf, just the 3 carpetbaggers in it!!

You meant to say that VT doesn't play you anymore. You guys have met 51 times over the years. Eight game conference schedules don't allow for too many tough OOC games--unless you were in the Big Easyt or something...

Husker Chris... you missed the point of my statement of Kansas' schedule. I am a MISSOURI fan. Kansas is in the running for a top 5. I know the Big 12 North well. My squad was their champion. My comment was that Kansas did not play Texas, Oklahoma, or Tech. They also barely squeaked by K-state , Colorado , A&M and I believe they allowed 39 points to the lowly Huskers at home.Missouri on the other hand blew out the like opponents, and allowed only two field goals to Nebraska on thier home field.

So the jist of my comment was that Missouri had been slighted. Not only did they have a much more difficult schedule, they dominated the North Division.

@wvu_lifer - My understanding was it was a mutual agreement that WVU & VT wouldn't be playing anytime soon. Kind of funny a WVU fan would claim VT tried to avoid playing them. I lived in Charleston WV for more than a decade, and I remember how hard WVU tried to avoid playng MARSHALL for years, until the governor stepped in.

Besides, you should be happy VT left the Big East. At least now, WVU has a chot at winning the conference.

(PS, congratulations on the Fiesta Bowl and hiring a coach in about the only way possible that saved a little face for the WVU admin. Before that they looked like a cross between the Keystone Cops and the Beverly Hillbillys, that then went out and hired Brittney Spears for legal advice. Who sues for breach of contract BEFORE the contract is breached? And from what I hear, it was WVU that did not fullfill their commitments, meaning WVU is guilty of breach of contract.)

Here is what Army's home schedule will look like for 2008

Army home opponents will be Akron, Eastern Michigan, Temple, Louisiana Tech, Air Force and Division I-AA New Hampshire, according to a source. Not exactly Must-See football.

Army will be lucky to draw 20,000 fans to the home games besides Air Force.

It is believed that Eastern Michigan and Louisiana Tech replaced ACC teams Georgia Tech and Boston College.

    Kevin Donahue (#22):

Does anyone other than ABC (and the ACC itself) want to do the Labor Day opener?

I think ABC would do far better to push for (or help set up each season) an interesting marquee non-conference game like the Clemson-Alabama game, or Virginia Tech-Southern California a few years back.

Essentially, a decent Bowl game to kick off the season.

They'd make a chunk of change and keep a whole pile of Bowdens happy.

@Regan - The ACC is the #1 fan of the game, without question. (I think even ABC is losing interest given the past few years.)

I have heard rumors that Georgia Tech - with their shiny new coach - has been approached to fill the slot in a home game against the Miami Hurricanes. I suspect (but don't know) that Miami will only be lookwarm (at best) to the idea, because the Canes are really looking forward to their Sept 6 game with Florida and won't disturb their schedule greatly to play a Mon night game as well. The ACC could put the Jackets on the road, potentially at Va Tech or at BC. Of course, it would mean moving the current (J-Ville State) opener and whomever the Jackets get would have to move a game, too.

The other possibility is promoting the Virginia - Southern Cal game.

I am sure there will be a lot of negative talk towards the Sooners BUT those who will be doing all the talking are fans of school that have or had D-1AA on their schedules. You might want to update this entry?

    As of 4 Feb 2008, I show:

    BCS SCHOOLS NEEDING ONE GAME
    ----------------------------
    ACC: Virginia Tech
    Big East: Louisville, Rutgers, Syracuse
    Big Ten: Illinois, Wisconsin
    Big XII: Texas Tech
    SEC: Kentucky, LSU

    NON-BCS SCHOOLS NEEDING GAMES
    -----------------------------
    C-USA: UAB, Tulane
MAC: Ohio, Kent State (2), Western Michigan (2)
    Sun Belt: Louisiana-Monroe

It also appears that Akron needs to drop a game, but I'm unsure which one of these has been cancelled:

    Aug. 30 at Wisconsin
    Sept. 6 at Syracuse
    Sept. 13 at Kentucky
    Sept. 20 Army
    Sept. 27 Cincinnati
