Grading the Coaches
CoachesHotSeat checks in with their 2007 final team-by-team grade of every head coach. (For those that aren't familiar with CoachesHotSeat, just bookmark it now - you'll thank me later.)
So... who get's the top marks? Probably some of those you suspect, but CoachesHotSeat's list is pretty damn good... so take a look.
2007 "A" Coaches
Les Miles - LSU
Mark Richt - Georgia
Gary Pinkel - Missouri
Mark Mangino - Kansas
Todd Graham - Tulsa
George O'Leary - UCF
Rich Brooks - Kentucky
Brian Kelly - Cincinnati
June Jones - Hawaii
Bronco Mendenhall - BYU
Sylvester Croom - Miss. St.
Jeff Jagodzinski - Boston College
Troy Calhoun - Air Force
Bill Lynch - Indiana
Rocky Long - New Mexico
Howard Schnellenberger - Florida Atlantic
CoachesHotSeat goes on to rank all the entire FBS division on a A to F- scale, along with some insight & explanation for every ranking. I can't take issue with too many of them (Wannstedt got a "C" at Pitt?!?! Stoops wins the Big 12, has his team ranked near the top, and gets a "C"?!?!).
Again, it's pretty good stuff, so go read the whole thing.

BB, Given that this is a rating for **this year's performance**, no - I think they rated Meyer about right. Or, maybe he deserved a "B" because the offense was great and the defense was dealing with the loss of 9 starters. If it were a comprehensive rating (as we debated in a previous thread) I would rate him higher.

Thanks for the Topic
Totally agree with the top six except I would put Mangino at the top followed by Grahmn.
I'll take issue with a few on here-Why notCroom-Miss St- great job 8-5--A 5 losses deserves an A Ok whatever
Gundy-Ok St- 7-6---C Do What He's in the XII south beat Texas Tech something OU couldnt do
Patterson TCU 8-5 C He does more with less granted that 8-5 aint 11-2 but heck he gets his kids to give 100% every time
Ballif Rice 3-9 C- first year at the second smallest school in Div 1-A 3 of those losses were against XII teams- they also played rivals Houston & TCU--Actually beat So Miss great game- not bad better than 1-11
Chizik IA St 3-9 C- here again first year coach in the XII They beat Iowa & Colorado-Heck even OU coudnt beat Colo- aint that right
Dodge N Tex 2-10 D here again first year coach with the worst recruiting in the state give him a few years recruiting and the spread will dominate the Sunbelt
Morris Baylor F 3-9 Morris is a great coach in the toughest division in CFB at the only private school in the XII- to get three wins is an accomplishment
Bowden FSU D 7-6 Heck he could coach my team- right Kev
Spurrier USC D 6-6 Ditto tough league 6 wins, should improve
Weis N D F 3-9 I Agree sorry JT Irish they got this one right
For all you Sooner fans even though yall lost yalls Bowl Stoops should always rank an A especially when he beat a great Missu team twice and his team beat the Horns-Huge Upset close game

Tomcat, until Stoops wins a BCS bowl, I can't give him an A.
That don't mean he deserves a C, but that's what you get by not winning, I can live with that.
I'm not sure beating the Horns was an upset as much as the Horns played above their heads and made it a close game. JMO LOL

#9 OU Ron Thought I'd get more response from my post, appreciate you chiming in. Yes from a Texas persective a loss to OU is an upset.I'm sure the Sooners faithful feel the same way when they lose to the Horns. There is no doubt that both Stoops & Leach are offensive gurus and they know how to win games.
BTW right now I'm about half way through the book " Running with the big dogs"
This is the story of an event that expoits violence and promotes extravagantly irresponsible and destructive behavior among the persons who attend it.
The Texas-Oklahoma game, while not bigger than life,is more than a game.Thousands upon thousands of football fans from two states, their brains united into a single altered state, arrive annually at the Cotton Bowl stadium, bellowing exhortations for the spilling of blood. You'll find audiences more genteel and reserved at cockfights.

Tomcat post #8 and #10, interesting posts. I do agree and I think that Stoops should at least receive a B according to this list. Even though this list is someones opinion, I am wondering what their mind set is. Bob Stoops only coached his team to an 11-3 season with wins over Mizzou, Texas, Oklahoma State, ATM, and Miami. Not to mention the Sooners were led by a then inexperienced true freshman QB. Not to mention the Sooners won their 2nd Big 12 championship in a row. An 11-3 season deserves higher than a C, sorry. I do however think that Sly Croom rightfully deserves an A. He coached one of the worst if not the worst teams in the SEC to an 8-5 record with a bowl win, thats not too bad. BOOMER!!!!.............................SOONER!!!!!!!!

#16 OU Fan guess you could say the MSU Bulldogs had a good year after the season opener. I just cant see some really more deserving teams and coaches with C's and C- with 10 & 11 wins.
Like you said its all opionion anyway.
Surrier goes 6-6 gets a D guess one more win gets him an A see what I mean
11-3 =C 8-5 =A

I wonder why Rich Rodriguez didn't get a higher grade. WVU went 11-2 and won their bowl. OH, that's right; Rodriguez didn't coach WVU to that win. Justice really IS served.
Of course, you could argue Bill Stewart deserves a high grade, given the results of that game and all the distractions associated with it. But, grade a coach on the strength of ONE game? I don't think so. Guess we'll just have to wait and see how he does next season. Cant Wait!!! Go Mountaineeeeeeeers!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you were going to steal that phrase (which isn't Tomcat's, many Texas fans use it, I only do on posts I consider important so it doesn't lose its meaning to me), then at least type it correctly. It should be Hook'em Horns, not Hook-em Horns.

#19 gOSU27 Ya thats your opinion, tell that to the KU Jayhawks, they didnt make it to a BCS game.
Their coach did an outstanding job.#1 in my book.
Your an Ohio St fan-Heck if you had to play Oklahoma, Texas Tech, Missu, Kansas, Ok St next year and then have to win a conf title game after that guantlet, then you go to a BSC game.
Forget about BCS when it comes to coaching.
The best statement concerning the profession is without a doubt." He can beat yours with his or beat his with yours." complementing an opponent
Triva Question-- Which famous coach made that statement???
Hint the same one that said " dance with the one that brung ya"
Adios Tomcat

How can you leave Dennis Erickson at Arizona State off that list??? He inherited a team that was at best average and turned them into a 10 win team in the first season.

Matt Sawyer, Post #27, maybe they are holding the losses against Oregon, Southern California, and Texas against him. Those were the Sundevils "big" games. I like the "Spark"(y) he put back in the football program. Just get rid of those maroon pants!

Hey 40 Acres, ya KU won the Orange and it was a BCS game- excuse me, but werent they #3 in the XII right. At least they got that one right, kinda shame that no more than two teams can from a particular conference can play in a BCS game. We are all in agreement that teams from big10/11 and pac 10 are at an unfair advantage over teams from say the XII or SEC.
Yes your right coach Royal had alot of famous quotes.
#27 Az St couldnt even beat Texas one of the most overated teams according to the sports writers who always claim that USC is #1 lets not get into one of those who beat who victory chains because yall cant even beat the Horns. The Horns have one at least 10 games 7 years straight and our coach is ranked a C so go figure.
I have to agree with Lennie those A&M pants do look funky.

He has a lot of players that are going to play in the NFL and he should be in National Title Games! If he does not win, I will say it again and LOUD, IF HE DOES NOT WIN AT LEAST 2 MORE NATIONAL TITLES IN THE NEXT 5 YEARS...He should be called Bob Oops! Now we will read the posts from Texas Longhorns fans sing about how William Brown made the grade! Crimson and Cream True!
