Which teams fit the profile to be 2008 BCS Champions?

Olin Buchanan has a great piece at Rivals breaking down the common characteristics of the ten BCS championship teams.

Some of the characteristics are obvious (play in a BCS conference, as no mid-major has won a BCS title), but some are fairly insightful (return at least six starters from a top-40 defense).

CHARACTERISTICS OF A BCS CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM 1. Play in a "BCS conference" 2. Post at least seven victories the previous season 3. Win the previous season's bowl 4. Have an upperclassman quarterback with starting experience 5. Return at least six starters from a top-40 defense

While there are a gaggle of teams that meet three or more of the characteristics, there there are only six teams that meet all five for the 2008 season:

Wake Forest Demon Deacons
1. ACC
2. 9-4
3. Won the Meineke Car Care over UConn (24-10)
4. QB Riley Skinner
5. Sevens starters - #27 defense in 2007

Rutgers Scarlet Knights
1. Big East
2. 8-5
3. Won the International Bowl over Ball State (52-30)
4. QB Mike Teel
5. Eight starters - #17 defense in 2007

Kansas Jayhawks
1. Big XII
2. 12-1
3. Won the Orange Bowl over Virginia Tech (24-21)
4. QB Todd Reesing
5. Nine starters - #12 defense in 2007

USC Trojans
1. Pac10
2. 11-2
3. Won the Rose Bowl over Illinois (49-17)
4. QB Mark Sanchez
5. Seven starters - #2 defense in 2007

Alabama Crimson Tide
1. SEC
2. 7-6
3. Won the PetroSun Independence Bowl over Colorado (30-24)
4. QB John Parker Wilson
5. Six starters - #31 defense in 2007

Georgia Bulldogs
1. SEC
2. 11-2
3. Won the Sugar Bowl over Hawaii (41-10)
4. QB Matt Stafford
5. Nine starters - #14 defense in 2007

That's it. Those are your six teams that meet the BCS champions' profile.

There are exceptions to the profile, of course. Tennessee won the title with inexperienced Tee Martin and fewer returning starters on defense. And five teams have won the BCS without winning their bowl game the year prior.

Of the six, three are extremely shaky at best when you start talking national championships. Profile or no, I think you would be hard pressed to find too many folks who would put much stock in selecting Alabama, Wake Forest, or Rutgers as the potential champs. Each of these teams looks to be (at least) a year away from playing at a national championship level, in my opinion.

On the flip side, Kansas, Georgia, and USC will definitely be at the top of most preseason polls. All three were not only ranked not just in the top 40 on defense, but in the top 15. The three won ten games during the regular season and each won a BCS bowl game. I think you have to look at all three teams much more favorable than their fellow list-mates.

Who's missing from the list? LSU, Texas and West Virginia missed the defensive side of the equation, returning fewer than six starters. Oklahoma and Florida were put out on both the bowl game criteria, while the Gators also missed on the "upperclassman" status of QB Tim Tebow while the Gators also missed being ranked in the top forty defeneses. (Florida finished with the #41 defense.)

But the formula is there and it's hard to argue with the history. Of course there are exceptions, but that just "proves" the rule, right?

Alabama is not there yet, but with a top 5 recruiting class, we're comin'! :)

From this list, I believe Georgia is the most likely to end up atop the 2008 polls.

    BigTide,

Saw you on another thread...Crowing about recruiting? Guess you've got to have SOMETHING to crow about when you haven't beaten Auburn or LSU in five years, and you lost to both of them, along with MSU & ULM this year as well...

Congrats on the "big win" against Colorado, and the "big take" you guys have in recruiting...Tell me who founded Rivals again? Are the guys ranking the players the same ones who changed a 2* guy that Saban signed to a 4* guy...The day after he signed with 'Bama?

Yeah...I'd hang my hat on that #1 ranking...Go talk to Mack Brown about national championships in February...

As it is, I'm having trouble hearing you...I've got two big crystal footballs in my ears...It's making it difficult...

Had I written this article, I might have presented the teams in alphabetical order.

AL, GA, KS, Rutgers, USC, & Wake seems a little easier to take from that stand-point.

AL, in addition to meeting all 5 criteria, has a “big-time” HC, and another solid recruiting class coming in. GA & KS have already made their case. Then, it becomes easier to over-look Rutgers and move on to USC before finally stopping at Wake.

By starting with Wake, followed by Rutgers, one immediately wants to discredit the premise of the article, despite those teams having met the criteria. By starting with AL, the list becomes more palatable.

Now, I’m not surprised at OSU being absent from the list, given their loss to LSU. What surprises me is they’re having been left out of the article entirely. Given what OSU has coming back, I would not be surprised to see them return to the NC, were they to get by some early season big-time tests (at USC), not to mention, they visit the only team to beat them during the regular season. So, my question is, in addition to the bowl loss, what other criteria did OSU fail to meet?

porky.....tebow needs to win something on his own first...a sec title is first on the list....and next years sec champ should come out of the east....georgia or florida....but i would have to say that if he ended his career at florida without playing in another national title game...as a fan, it would be disappointing....

but i have no doubt that he will get us back to the promise land....

Georgia and USC look like the best two out of this list, though I must point out that while Mark Sanchez is an upperclassman, he has very little experience. So, I tend to discount that part of this rating system. Also, how is Matt Stafford considered an upperclassman but Tim Tebow is not? They're both rising juniors.

Somehow, I'm guessing OSU will make it back to the BCSCG again next year and lose (again).

As for this thread itself, it's verrrrry interesting, as some have pointed out...

It's also littered with holes, when you stop and think that LSU returns far more than a half dozen players with starting experience, on the defensive line alone...

Considering most would say that position is the biggest need for concern (along with corner), I'd say this "intuitive" system of deteriming favorites for a championship is a tad hollow...

Florida returns a junior whose also a Heisman Trophy Winner, and LSU returns a sophomore whose an SEC Championship Game MVP...

I also think it's quite convenient that he threw his lasso so wide as to talk about a "Top 40" defense returning, when in fact there's only one team up there whose defense finished outside of the Top 30...I wonder which one it is? Hmm...

TE: How many times have we warned you about sticking crystal footballs in your ears? Jesus!

For you guys wondering why Florida isn't on the list: It's not becauase of Tebow, but because they didn't win their bowl game, in accordance with the formula above, at least...

After this past season, we need to be able to make some sense from all these upsets. Sorry, but this guy's little five-point theory doesn't add one iota of understanding to it...

I thought Sarah Jessica Parker Wilson had graduated from Alabama. Sorry, Bama, but I think you have your very own Brandon Cox on your hands--a QB who as a sophomore showed a lot of promise, but who slid downward his last two years.

Of course, Cox was 3-0 against Bama. Wilson, 0-2 against Auburn. Okay, bad analogy...

Do they mean that the qb was an upperclassman last year, or will be this year?

I'm not sure of Texas's defensive rank, but they only return 4 starters if I remember correctly. With Will Muschamp, I think Texas will easily be top 40 next year.

OU-Ron #9, Mack Brown had been dubbed Mr. February (maybe Coach February, not really sure) because he always pulled in good talent and still lost to OU 5 times straight. No titles, great talent. I believe TE is saying that Saban will do the same thing (except vs. OU, unless they played in 5 straight bowls for some weird reason).

Sorry, TE, but would you mind terribly if LSU relenquished the title of 'media darling' for this upcoming season? I think it's already been handed off to Georgia--at least until they do their customary faceplant against Florida...

Yall are 100% correct that Matt Stafford will be a junior this year, as will Tebow. I sent an email to Olin and I think he may clarify that teams *will* have a junior/senior qb.

With that in mind, Florida would be "in" with Tebow, but still "out" on the bowl game loss and "out" on top 40 defense. Florida finished with the #41 defense.

I have updated the original post for clarity.

@TE - The characteristic was return at least six starters from a top 40 defense. LSU only returns five starters on defense, according to the 2007 depth chart.

You are correct in your assertion that more than six players have starting experience on LSU's defense, but they aren't "the" starter.

For example, if you starting DE is gone - then you don't get "credit" for a guy who started one game there during an injury.

The really weak criterion in this formula is the one about having won at least seven games the previous season. What? Only seven? That's not real strong. The only reason it's that low is because there were some flukes in the data--two teams coming off 7-win seasons won the BCS, but in fact, six other teams were coming off 11-win seasons.

Statistically speaking, there haven't been enough BCS championships to correlate any data credibly. That's why he had to lower his range to 7-win seasons, which as we all know, is hardly a predictor of the subsequent season. The more seasons that are in the sample, the higher the average wins would be, eventually going to over nine wins per previous season, I would guess.

Don't any of you remember statistics class, or were you all damn PE majors???

#24: WEA, Yes - I'm a computer science grad and took probability & statistics, along with two years of calculus and 1.5 years of discrete math / computational theory. You are correct that the reliability of the prediction is directly proportional to the cardinality of the sample space (i.e. the more years of BCS data, the better the forecast). It also seems likely that with the passage of time, the win count of the preceeding season will tend upward from 7 as the trend is toward "dynastic success" (e.g. USC, Texas, etc).

OK, I'll take off my propeller hat and geeky glasses now.

Yes, for all you gut-majors, what we are trying to say is that the more seasons in the sample, the more accurate the findings, and that over time, that 7-win criterion would migrate much higher. So it's safe to say that barring more flukes, you can safely take Rutgers and Alabama off this list...

According to the article the qb has to be a junior or senior with some playing experience.

The annual faceplant comment hurt. Even in a year when we beat the Gators, we get run in the ground. Only 10 more months and we prove you wrong. Of course, this formula means nothing for the DAWGS. We followed up our stellar 2002 13-1 season with 2 losses to LSU (1 of which landed LSU in the Game that got one of the crystal balls stuck in TE's ear), and of course the annual faceplant to Florida. Lennie Collins #43, I agree. Plus, there is no chance in h#ll of Kansas winning in Norman. Basketball yes, Footall NO. It just won't happen. And then, doesn't Kansas play in Austin this year? The Jayhawks are doomed............... Well on a second thought, Texas has proved that they can be "WOOPED" in Austin so I don't know if the Texas Longhorns home field advantage will be much of an advantage at all. And isn't OU something like 50-2 at home? Both home losses in Norman were 7 points and below. Kansas had a remarkable season and Mangino did an outstanding coaching last season, but the Kansas Jayhawks will not beat the Oklahoma Sooners in Norman. And you are right about BAMA. There is no chance of the Tide winning the SEC this year. They might finally beat Auburn though, you never know. BOOMER!

It was a Cornhuskers fan that pointed this out...he could have been on to somethin'. These warm weather schools with coastlines have won the last 5 National Titles. Ohio State is the only cold weather team in the last 7 years.

That way you might actually appear to have graduated from Auburn - a fine school, IMO.

Pure Crapola, much less worthy than a pre-season poll. We got a beach, we call it Myrtle. I can certainly see why the beach thing should be factored into this junk formula. Come on now, who really thinks Wake is going to rocket into the NC? Rutgers? Parity is on the way, I suspect it is still a year or three away.

I like the criterionused. The winning the Bowl Game criterion is suspect, as the article admits only half the champoins meet the criterion, it is included due to a recent four year trend.

The wins the previous season and returning starter look like they should be handled more like a graduated sccale than a boolean meets or not.

I would be interested in which teams meet four of the five criterion, as their have been exceptions to the rule I would have a hard time believing they were exceptions to more than one.

Muschamp will be able to call the Razorbacks motherf-cker more this year as the Hogs come into Austin.
Matt Sawyer mentions strength of schedule
When looking at UT going undefeated with thier given schedule, would be one heck of an accomplishment, one characteristic of a Championship team. Ark,KU,Missu,OU,TTech,Ok State
Can KU survive games in Norman & Austin ?
interesting- looks like another fun year
WareaglAtl The Eyes of Texas is only one song sung during mammoth erections-flag raising and after the game. I've been going to games in Austin for over 40 years and dont remember seeing a loss in person, I beleive the A&M loss in 06 was the first one in several years and Texas does well on the road & at home, can you say Dynasty.

@Matt - We get it, you have a blog. Chill. Using strength of schedule has been suggested, but I don't think you can arbitrarily discount the strength of a returning defense, either. When you look at the past 10 champions, all but one met the returning defense criteria. And while the scope of the sample set has been explained well past my attention span, 9 out of 10 isn't something to be sneezed at, either.

@40 Acres - There's plenty of room in the open threads for whatever ya got. Keeping it on topic is much appreciated. PS - Congrats on the shift change.

40 Acres: Georgia's fight song is actually a reworked version of The Battle Hymn of the Republic. They sing "Glory, glory, to old Georgiaaaaa...." We at Auburn have a version of that as one of our songs, but it's not our main fight song.

ATM's fight song, or 'War Hymn', is a little creepy to me. They call out Texas so much, it's borderline obsessive/compulsive. I'd be embarrassed if our song mentioned Alabama that much. Their line about your song, "sounds like hell!" is pretty funny though...

I think the best fight song is "Hail to the Victors". Second is "Anchors aweigh", from Navy.

GA Boy: Sorry about the 'faceplant' thing. Don't think I'm not rooting for you, though!

Those aggies need to get a life they are obsessed over Texas, they even changed the roman numeral lettering on their university clock tower because it looked too much like t.u.! Thats what they like to call us Texas University for some reason. I can defiantely show them where varsity can stick those horns they sawed off!

UGA looked good down the stretch this year, but they weren't expected to be this good. That is kinda how the 'Dawgs go. The trend for Georgia is to have a really good year (better than expected) when starting the season around the 15-20 mark. But, they will most likely be a top 3 team when the season starts. If they keep to their trend, expect about 3 losses next year. They never live up to the hype, when the hype is there to start the season.

I'm a cane fan, but have lived in GA my whole life. So I know a thing or two about GA football.

OSU27-by your admiration of the TN fight song,
I see you have never been on the receiving end of a Tennessee Vol asswhipping and had to hear "Rocky Top" about 20 times in a night. Everytime I hear it, it makes me want to kick my old hounddog! This year in Athens should be another good one. Me and my best bud, a Tennesse hillbilly as you would have it, will make the trip once again. I owe him one after the last two years.

    GO DAWGS!

    Cane_Nation
As bad as I hate to admit it, you are dead on with your analysis of the DAWGS when projected high preseason. Again, here's to new trends!

    GO DAWGS!

Say what you want about statistical analysis and trending positive correlations, the teams that have to be in the running next year, without a doubt, are FL, GA, LSU, MO, OK, OSU, TX, & USC. I'll give KS & WVU an outside shot, and figure to see GA & LSU in the SEC Championship. But, say what you want about OSU's schedule last season, if they get by USC in their house, OSU is going back to the dance for their 3rd straight try. An ya noze wat de say, boiz an gerlz: Tree timez iz a chahm.

(Some of you may notice, I can't spell either. Come to think of it, Ramblin Gator (Post 73), spell check don't save my a$$.)

OU-Fan (Post 64), about Julio Jones, I was already to bust your cajones (Get it, ca-"Jones"?), given he's from AL & Pat White's from AL, Jones is headed to WVU. But WAIT! Rich Rodriguez left WVU for MI, that means Jones is now likely going to......OSU! (You're right; it's not funny.)

40 Acres etc (Post 79), cool, you're a Blue Knight AND a Navy man. I just may root a little extra for TX this year. (Seriously, thanks for the service to this great nation. Autigerman, that thanks goes double for you!)

WarEagleA (Post 80), you know how people say, "Don't quit your day job"? You may be the only one here, this side of Gator Hippy, who might could get away with it. (Speaking of GH, where iz that boy?)

WVU_Lifer (Post 102), Auburn in Mo-Town isn't the only good team on WVU's none conference schedule. WVU is at ECU next year (They may not be great or of the Big 6, but they had a winning season and won their bowl......poor Coondog.), and WVU's at CO. OK didn't win in boulder last year; don't expect WVU to waltz in and take it without having to donate more than their share of blood & sweat.

Speaking of WVU's schedule, last season almost began with an exception to the criteria of this thread. WVU opened with W MI. In 2006, W MI finished 8-5 with a 3 pt loss to Cinci. In 2007 they returned 16 starters, 9 on defense, 7 on offense, AND the 2005 MAC Freshman of the year, who by 2007 was a Jr. They won 4 more games after opening at WVU. Go figure.

Kev, are you going to open a thread for recruiting results tomorrow? Seems fitting...

Songs (forgot about that one): I still love Rocky Top!!!

Bands: I'll always love my Mountaineers. They have a drum corps opening that'll thrill you to death; and nobody marches into the shape of the state of West "By God" Virginia the way they do.

This thread: 9 out of 10, huh? Hmmm......

Nothing like being in the Grove on a Saturday afternoon, listening to and singing along with "Dixie" as the Pride of the South plays...
