Coaching News & Notes

Here's a few updates on the nation's coaching searches:

- Army will hire Cal Poly's Rich Ellerson to take over for Stan Brock. I'm told this is an upgrade, but I can't honestly say I know all that much about Rich Ellerson. You boys are on your own with that one.

- New Mexico State is in the final stages of its hiring process. Word is that three candidates remain: UCLA's DeWayne Walker, TCU's Mike Shultz, and a mystery candidate who may or may not be Dennis Franchione.

- Mike Haywood is the new head coach at Miami (OH). I've said a lot of nice things about Haywood over the years, from his days at LSU, Texas, and Notre Dame, most recently. I think he's a hell of a coach. Given the Miami of Ohio coaching family tree... I guess we can expect to see Haywood at a big-time BCS within four years. Heck, maybe he & Urban Meyer can duke it out for the Fighting Irish job one day.

- With the hiring of Haywood, the MAC is now home to three of the six African-American head coaches (Turner Gill @ Buffalo, Ron English @ Eastern Michigan, and Mike Haywood @ Miami) in FBS football.
