Old Pal Bob Griese Benched This Week for Insensitive Remarks
One half of Keith Jeck-son and my old pal Bob Griese may be pretty much retired now, but one still works CFB games regularly and was doing color for ESPN on last week's Ohio State--Minnesota game when the network had the broadcasters do a promo for upcoming NASCAR coverage. When shown a graphic of the top 5 drivers, Chris Spielman asked where Columbian driver Juan Pablo Montoya was (in the rankings). After a quick laugh,, Bob Griese said "he's out having a taco".
Griese came back a few minutes later and gave one of two on-air apologies for his remarks. While some have jumped out and claimed that his remarks were racist (where have we heard that before?) most dismiss them as merely being insensitive and ill-advised. An ESPN spokesman has confirmed that Griese will not be working a game this weekend and understands that "the comment was innappropriate".
When reached at his cocaine farm outside Cartagena, Montoya said through a translator that the #42 Target Chevrolet was running great and oh, that he had never heard of Bob Griese. (JUST KIDDING!!!!!)
And for the record, I like tacos but not NASCAR and will take a one-day suspension from blogging for that last innappropriate remark.
