Huskers QB leaving team, likely to transfer
Nebraska quarterback Joe Dailey has requested a release from his scholarship and will leave NU. Daily, who started every game in 2004, had been listed as the #1 QB prior to spring practice. It's believed that he has fallen from grace on the Huskers depth chart, perhaps as low as #4 on the list.
NU head coach Bill Callahan released the following statement on Dailey's departure:
"I sat down with Joe Dailey Monday afternoon, and he discussed his desire to explore a transfer to another school, and we have honored his wishes. Coach (Jay) Norvell and I met with Joe and conveyed to him that the competition at the quarterback position remains open. We have not named a starter and nothing at that position is etched in stone. However, Joe feels it is in his best interest to explore other opportunities of playing at another institution."We are disappointed in Joe's decision to leave our program. He is a quarterback who knows our offense after spending a year in our system. We have invested a great deal of time and energy in training him to be a successful quarterback at Nebraska. I have great respect for Joe as a person and as a player, and we appreciate his contributions to this program. We wish Joe the best."
Dailey will likely transfer to another D-IA school where he would have two years of remaining eligibility. Ohio University is thought to be among the possibilities for Dailey, as it represents a chance for him to again play under Frank Solich. His high school coach said the process of finding Dailey a new football home is well under way.
"I've started the film-distribution process," said Rich Hansen of St. Peter's Prep in Jersey City, N.J. "About eight schools will be getting film of Joe, and probably by about Wednesday, I'll have the exact schools (determined)."
No shock here to Husker fans. It's pretty clear that QB Zac Taylor is Callahan's guy (and the 357 yards in the first half of the Red/White game didn't hurt his cause, either). Dailey has skills, they just don't seem to be right for the West Coast offense. Dailey will catch on at a top level school if he's willing to sit out one season.

I don't know that I agree here. The guy wants to play QB. NU wanted him to play QB. Now they don't, so he wants to go elsewhere. You can't ask the kid to put aside everything. Some kids may elect to, but I don't know that you can beat him up for wanting to play QB.

Dailey has been a class act while at Nebraska. I'm sorry to see him go and I wish the best for him.
Zac Taylor played well in the spring game and the QB behind him threw 8 passes last year, 4 interceptions. Our only experienced QB has just left the team.
Yeeha!
