Huskers players need you to speak s-l-o-w-l-y

Nebraska QB Sam Keller, who transferred to NU from the bright lights / big city at Arizona State, is having to re-learn his play calling for his new Husker teammates. According to the Omaha World-Herald, Keller's teammates can't understand him because he talks too fast.

"He doesn't slur his words, but they just come all together," NU receiver Maurice Purify said. "It's sometimes that he says it so fast that you don't catch all the necessary stuff. We just have to pay attention a little more when Sam's calling the plays."

Not really sure, Kev, what your title for this one implies. The new Husker offense is extremely complicated and Keller needs to be sure to annunciate every syllable. He'll be fine by August...

If Calahan would get the plays in faster, Keller would not have to talk so fast ( just kidding )
I have to agree with the Husker fans (and that don't happen too often)The start of this blog could make you think the players are a little on the slow side.GO SOONERS

Kevin: You need neither my permission nor my advice to post your articles. The Constitution gives you that right. That having been said, when I moved out here and not only saw Husker flags & banners, but bird feeders, squirrel feeders, mail boxes, garage doors, welcome mats, weather veins (You name it.), I knew I had stepped into a part of the country where college football is big time religion. Had I known about this article, I would have advised you to stand by. But, as I've said, you don't need my advice. I know what you meant, and those Nebraskans that took the time to read the article know what you meant. Some folks, they just can't get past the title.

I've got nothing but love for the Husker fans. Before you take offense, read the original article from Omaha. I'm not misstating anything. One of the problems in the NU huddle is Keller is talking too fast. The other players need him to slow it down. That's it. End of story.

    SoCal (#6),

I don't think there is a "whole-lot" of topic worthy content this early in the season?

I for one don't mind the little things that really don't mean too much....

I mean it's kinda nice to dabble into something rather than just.... stats, stats, and more stats all the time.

#10 I agree, Calihans offense is extremely complicated and its probably difficult enough without a fast talking QB. They had better slow it down a bit, because this upcoming season the Huskers will have their hands full. They have Wake Forrest and USC as OCC opponents and they are coming down to Austin to play the Horns.
I'm not sure if they have Ok State on their schedule or not, but that was one hell of a game last year. With that kind of opposition Nebraska could have one heck of a ranking.

Diggs (posts 10, 11), I dont know, its proably a combination of a couple of things.
For one, just trying to keep the guy on his toes. Some of these topics have simply been dopey: the FieldTurf/Global Warming/Al Gore thing. Come on Diggs, multiple people called him on that one.

The guy is also a bit too selective with what he brings attention to (atleast whats how it seems sometimes), and I dont think its just me. Here's GatorHippy commenting on a story regarding Florida players being arrested I brought up...

SoCal (#27), Yeah, I e-mailed that to K-Hue back on Monday when it broke...Hoping he'd put a thread up...But I guess he didn't feel that it warranted discussion...
    _______________

Also, with some of the heavy slants he puts on things, he opens himself up to repremand. HE tells Clemson81 "nice spin on [that] one" in the Michigan-faces-ApplyState blog/thread... "Michigan is taking the easy road" he says ! Its Michigan's first time EVER scheduling a Non-D1A opponent and he trys to knock em down for it ?

An underlying provocation, Id say, is that he closes certain Blog/Topics when there's still a lively discussion going on... its a bit irking I must admit. (Just leave em open for a bit, Donny).

... Im expecting TMac to come with "talk to the hand" next.

    anyway...

Diggs, actually I dont have much of an issue with this particular blog/topic. Its kind-of-an interesting situation. Keller's been described as "fiery & tenacious" even back at ASU, so there may be a deeper/interesting dynamic there, but I agree with most of the other people that Nebraska/Nebraska Players will sort this stuff out in time.

So Cal, post 17. You are correct. I did say it is an open forum and to take it up with Kevin. I said those things. I'll say em again. Fanblogs is an excellent site and if you aren't happy with how things go then You are more than welcome to move on. That's all. Fanblogs would go on without you and we'll all still talk. I sincerely hope you don't leave fanblogs. You do need to lighten up on Kevin though. This is a very slow time of year man. Not much going on in College FB. Just recognize that bro.

P.S. (talk to the hand) is weak as hell, but funny. When did people stop saying that? Sometime around 1995.

Tomcat, I'll barge in on this oone and say I think the Huskers will be better than the Sooners, not better than Texas, but a little better than Texas A&M and that will put them 2nd in the conference. No worries though be/c the Big 12 is back on the rise, so to be 2nd in that conference this year is saying alot, if it wasn't saying enough already. Keller is the best QB the University has seen for awhile, so it will be real interesting to see how he can lead this team. I think they will have some big wins and it will be a real interesting match-up at the Conference Championship between Texas and Nebraska.

not to worry about Keller talking too fast, he will get the hand signals down when he sends the plays in to Gantz. It will happen if Billy Boy can shove his ego into his pocket.

Tomcat, what do you mean Nebraska could have "one hell of a ranking" -- you mean in terms of Strength of Schedule? They'd have to win lots of games to be ranked high, regardless.

I dont know how similar the offenses are, but Arizona St's offense (last year) cant be that different than Nebraska's. There's nothing about Keller not picking-up on the offense, from that article. Also, this will be Callahan's 4th Year there. Id say that this group of Nebraska players should be the most prepared, as far as understanding the system. The team as a whole just needs reps to get in sync.

In USC circles there was some talk (mostly in a joking manner) about players not understanding JD Booty's Cajun/Louisiana accent. I dont think it was ever a big deal though.

  24. So Cal Clipper NATION said:

Nebraska - they lose their leading Rusher, Jackson, but have some pretty good depth (Lucky, Glenn, Wilson). However, they've had some injuries to contend with too, so... I dont know... the defense might be a bit more concerning.

They lose their two big-time DEs which were the two best Sacksters & Tacklers-for-Loss on the team; with not much behind them to work with.
And I think there were other injuries or arrests/suspensions recently, if Im not mistaken.

Nebraska's depth will be tested right-off-the-bat this season.

Glenn & Wilson are out due to injuries.

As for the QB situation, Keller will be the man to start the season regardless. Billy C's ego won't let anyone else in there until the season starts to faulter. Word is Ganz may be playing better in the spring than Keller though.

If Callahan doesn't do something grand this year, he never will.

What school did he decide on? Do you know? Well, VOLPIMP you are very lucky to have a wonderful family. Your son Knox is the future. You are right. I'm not going to live forever. That's why I would love to start my family as soon as possible, but it just isn't in the cards right now. Hopefully, I'll find a special lady who supports me. Alright, enough of that. Thanks So-Cal #23 My mistake wrong use of termiknowlegy, cant spell too good either. You know what I meant anyway.Yes SOS after a trip To Wake and hosting the Trojans, they will face 30% of the meat of the XII south. They have Ok State Cowboys and A&M at home then they travel to Austin. I dont know if coach Bill will redshirt alot of guys or not, however he did pick up some great freshman this year. He picked up a kid from La Porte Texas RB Quentin Castille 1,800 yds and 22 TDs his senior year.So even though they have injuries they have the depth to be competitive.
Looks like they have what it takes to make a run for it, we will all find out when they visit those Demon Deacons.

#27 SoCal: I believe Wilson is out for the year. Broke his leg apparently moving a TV. Must of been one big a$$ TV. Cody Glenn "may" be back. It was supposedly a minor foot or ankle injury he suffered late in the regular season last year, but he still hasn't recovered, so rumblings are it's more severe than what is being let on by the coaching staff. Also Marlon Lucky had some "medical" issues where he wound up in the hospital after being found unconsious by his roomate in their bathroom. Back to practicing but no one is letting out what happened.

They lost there only "hope" at DB. DB Zac Bowman out for 6 months. Can't remember which but he tore ligaments in a leg. Conflicting reports whether he can recover by October or if he's done for the year.

Damn, Nebraska is hobbling that bad, huh?
The XII North is truely wide-open then.

Along with Nebraska/Keller/Callahan, theres pleanty of interesting potential there... Prince/Freeman/KState... Pinkel/Daniels/Mizzu... Hawkins/Colorado. But who knows if thats a good thing or a bad thing.

Husker spring game was today... Glenn looked faster than last year, just as strong still... i believe he lost some weight (by design). Cody glenn actually took more snaps than lucky did. From what i have seen... i think Sam Keller gets the nod this year, and Goe Ganz ( i think he was par with Zach Taylor last year... maybe a prettier deep ball too) gets backup role as well as his senior year next year.. while patrick witt (a genies 18 yr old kid) gets 2 years to master the nuances of the Mid-west coast offense, then gets his Junior and Senior season to break career records. I wont go into stats of any kind because the defense stays vanilla all game... i just think (ironically) the biggest depth gap is at RB. 2 injuries worth noting.. Murtha went down with an ankle injury just as soon as the game started.. at least it isn't his plant foot beings that he is slated for RT. Marlon Lucky also tweaked something in his leg during a pile-up near the end of the game. If we can stay healthy this should be a great year. Go Skers!

Just got back from the Nebraska spring game. Only one thing to say.... Wow! The Keller/Purify connection along with Lucky will certainly be the most potent Callahan offense yet at Nebraska. Keller throws a laser on every down. Even with the injuries they will more than dominate the XII North...

"Wow" is right... Nebraska's 3rd String Running Back is "Mothra"!?! Ya better get em healthy, imagine Mothra running the ball. Oh wait, thats M-u-r-t-h-a, nevermind.

D-Minded Sker, how did the D-Line look? That what Im curious about with Nebraska. I figured Keller would be a nice fit in Callahan's West-Plains Offense.

Its hard to say... The DT's made some good plays and i come away less afraid to see the 4-3 (or even better; a 3-4 utilizing 2 DT's (one at base end)) But honestly.. i think that the play of the LB's and what they seem to be wanting to do with them will more than overcompensate for even par performers to do well this year.. and yes, its honestly like that.. 4 Senior LB's all whom seem actually well adapted at each position they are in... not like last year where Mckeon was hung out to dry sometimes in the passing game, as well as ruud getting knocked off plays by linemen. I see speed, and balance on defense being showcased this year, much like the run game was last year. Go Skers!

oh yea... before i forget. i only stated that Nebraska is a 'smidgen' low at depth from the RB position for Nebraska being... well Nebraska. Then, on a different subject i stated injuries worth noting... one being from the projected starter (at RT) Lydon Murtha and the other being Marlon Lucky (projected 'leader of the commission' at RB).. thus getting back to the gist of said section of the previous blog; depth at RB...
