Osborne returning to Huskers as interim AD

Legendary Nebraska head coach and Congressman Tom Osborne has agreed to return to the Huskers as the interim athletic director, a role that many have suggested should be his permanently.

"I've spent the majority of my life working with the athletic department at the university, and I want to do what I can at this point to continue in the pursuit of excellence that has been previously established," Osborne said in the release.

Perlman said Monday the athletic director – interim or permanent – would be charged with deciding whether Callahan would continue to lead a football program that has fallen on hard times.

"I am very pleased that Tom Osborne has agreed to help bring some leadership and direction to our athletic program," Perlman said. "Tom is committed to making the entire program successful. He brings the right experience, an understanding of Nebraska, and our aspirations. I look forward to working with him."

Greatest move ever? May be. Now the BS can stop on that football field. Like I said, "bring back Frank Solich or bring in Turner Gill or Tommie Frazier", and return this program to it's rightful standing. This is not Texas Tech - it is Nebraska. And, there was a way that Nebraska won sooooo many games. They won those games by playing more physical than other teams. "Smash Mouth Ball" was perfected at Nebraska. They got dem "big ol' corn fed farm boyz" out there. They need to put em back to work. "Road Graters" I think they call em. POUND THE ROCK!

I don't doubt that Osborne will give good direction to the Nebraska AD. He has the moral authority with the NU faithfull to get them all rowing the boat in the same direction again. However there is no 'rightful standing' any more for NU. NU is just another football team that used to be good right now. They're going to have to earn that all over again. A 17 year old that doesn't live nearby isn't going to give a rats behind about all those dusty trophies. They need a new coach, which won't happen till after this year and thy will need to retool players to match the new system. Then they have to prove on the field that this isn't Callahan II. Those who are thinking that having Osborne back automatically sets the clock back to 1994 and that they will be dominant anytime soon are in for some more tough times ahead

Can I assume the "West Coast Offense" will be out?

Could Thomas Osborne be pulling a Patrick Riley move? You know bring in a coach that will turn the program around. Then when Nebraska reach National Championship status, he fires him half way through the season then lead Nebraska to a victory and takes all the credit.

    This guy is Nebraska football.
All the great tradition. The great walk on program, he was intrumental in all that.
What Bear Bryant is to Alabama football so is Tom Osborne to Nebraska. Maybe some of us Southern guys can understand that.

Having been rasied in Colorado (maying years ago)i understand a little about the great tradition of this program.
Tom Osborne coming back is more towards returning some pride back to a struggling program and giving the good people of Nebraska something to cheer about.
    What a great move.

if you have any kind of a knowledge of "college footballs days gone by" you would know what tom osborne means to nebraska.....he is loved there more than lou holtz is in south bend.....osborne is all nebraska.... all the time....

it is not often that a coach affects a university and a whole state like tom osborne did at nebraska....there have only been a few.....

    bear bryant - alabama
    bo s. - michigan
    joe pa. - penn state
woody h. - the ohio state
    eddie r. - grambling

i am sure that people will put other coaches in this list but, what i am trying to say is that t. osborne can write his own ticket in that state....

hell, if he wanted to he could change the name to the nebraska osbornes and i am sure that everyone in nebraska would be ok w/ it.....lol

    jmho...

    go gators....and hokies

war eagle....bobby bowden has had to live in the limelight with the likes of jimmie johnson....and steve spurrier.....he doesn't have a full state behind him....and i don't want anyone thinking i don't respect b. bowden....he is definately in the top ten of coaches of all time in my book.....but he hasn't had the impact on florida as osbourne had on nebraska.....

Hey Autigerman(Comment #6)you are right I don't nothin' about Thomas Osborne and Nebraska Cornhuskers football. I am saying who would be a prefect fit RIGHT NOW for a coach? I can see him bringin' a coach in for 2 or 3 years to build the program up to National Title Contenders then fire him and takin' over. I think that he misses coaching and feel he can turn them back like they where when he left. I can also see him bringin' Frank Solich back but I don't think he would do a Patrick Riley on his hand picked replacement. That was a dumb move by the former AD to fire him in the first place!

Don't think he won't have more than a little bit of influence over what's going on there...Ala Broyles & Arkansas...I'm telling you guys now that Nutt already knows how to deal with an AD and a commanding presence over his shoulder...Not to mention, knowing how to recruit and how to run a run-based attack in a modern game such as the one that's played in CFB today...

    Nutt's your man...

    Lennie

Osborne could have the job if he wanted it. My understanding after hearing him on the radio was that he had planned to stay retired.

This guy is so much Nebraska football that when asked if he would be the interim AD sincing the program was in trouble he agreed.

Born and raised in Nebraska he really is Nebraska football.

By the way TE may have a valid point Houston Nutt might be a perfect match.

Regardless of what happens it will be almost impossible to return Nebraska football back to what it was under Osbourn,i believe those days are long gone for any team.

For one thing we are starting to see huge money thrown at these coaches and it will be increasingly hard for any coach to have a tenure like some of the older coaches. As more and more money sends them packing for new teams.

Same goes for our good friends at Bama, the days of one team domination are likely over. So the second coming of Osbourn or Bear Bryant are not very likely.

Hey Autigerman...You may be right but Nebraska has to have the forward pass in their offense. I do know Oklahoma Sooners Football and Robert Stoops realized that the Wishbone/Option was not going to cut it modern day. Oklahoma Sooners love Barry Switzer and will not be calling for him soon. What I am getting at if Nebraksa hires a coach that can bring them championships...Thomas can stay retired! I, personally don't see Houston Nutt fitting in. I sure Nebraskans want a "Homegrown" Coach to take over.
