Huskers ask Callahan to step down?
Following their evening practice on Thursday, Nebraska head coach Bill Callahan told the team that he has been asked to resign. According to reports, Callahan said that he had refused to resign, but he did not expect that he would be retained after this season.
According to KMTV News, University of Nebraska officials are refuting Callahan's claim, saying that no one has asked the coach to resign.
The Lincoln Journal Star has been unable to confirm the original KMTV story. After interviewing several players, none of the them confirmed that Callahan said he was asked to resign.
On Friday morning, after speaking at the Big Red Breakfast in Omaha, Husker running backs Randy Jordan declined comment on the report. A second Nebraska player, reached Friday morning, said of the report: "I can tell you right now, that's not true."
All of this nuance begs the question... does it really matter at this point? Isn't it clear to everyone that Callahan will not be back at Nebraska next year? If NU will can a guy for going 9-3 (Solich), won't they just as easily fire Callahan for his (currently 4-6) record?
At this point, it doesn't matter. Callahan will be out at Nebraska. He can resign or the Huskers can fire him. It doesn't matter - he won't be back in 2008.
The Husker Nation has endured *a lot* this year. They can endure a few more weeks, as long as Santa Osborne puts something pink in Callahan's stocking this year. Right? Right.

Bill will be back next year. The reason they fired Solich is because he wasn't bringing in big name recruits like Bill does. Plus the whole option thing was getting out-dated and I believe the school wanted a more professional approach. The last 2 seasons Bill has taking my huskers to two bowls and last season a north title and a shot at the big 12 title. Those are results.

Huskerpedia, there is LESS than ZERO chance Callahan will be back at NU. I know for a fact from several reliable sources within the program that the decision has not only been made, but that the new coach search is winding up with Pelini or Gill as the next Husker coach. All this is compeletely regardless of the Big Red blowing out K-State today (way too little, way too late)...

Pelini was shafted horribly by A.D. Steve Peterson, not even given a real interview after the Solich fire, even after doing an unbeleivable job finishing the season as interim head coach. But Peterson, the most hated man in Nebraska Athletics history, was fired weeks ago. Immediately Tom Osborne returns and the Athletic Department has gone back to mend all fences. They have rehired people in the Athletic Department that Peterson pushed out, and they have gone after Pelini big time. It is also well known that Pelini's wife and family loved Lincoln and are not at all happy in Baton Rouge. He has also been seen in Lincoln recently, and is considered the heavy favorite to replace Callahan.

If Nebraska turns there back on Coach Callahan they will have to do some serious rebuilding as far as bringing in new players which they already have trouble doing now. Lets take a look at there current roster. Most of there starters are seniors and others are players Coach Callahan brought in himself who's talents cater to his version of the West Coast Offense.. With that being said... If Nebraska pushes out Coach Callahan before he can build up a more stable program. There will be ad least 3 more bad season before they even make it to the "Hanks Chicken And Waffle Bowl" in Detroit, Michigan. Come on give the man a chance. I'm pretty sure all you "old" school Nebraska fans are use to seeing Nebraska win, but times have changed. If Osborne didn't retire I don't think his "Veer Option Schemes" would last in todays college football.

Tom Osborne was able to adapt though.By now he'd be running something of a more powerful spread option, I think. I personally suspect that today's gameplan was his doing. No, I don't have any special insight, just my suspicion. NU looked more like a TO team today than a Callahan team IMO. And if I'm right, Callahan is now a mere figurehead, which means he's already gone. As far as the next coach goes, maybe Pelini, maybe Gill...by why not Monte Kiffin? Lane was on the radio the other day and when he was asked, he indicated that Monte would have taken the job 4 years ago, and probably still would. So Monte comes in as head coach, I could see Lane coming in to be his Dad's offensive coordinator and the guy that takes over when Monte retires.
They'd definately build a monster of a program. Great recruiters, brilliant offensive and defensive minds and a nice 'family' atmosphere that would likely make Husker Nation VERY happy.

Huskerpedia, are you freaking NUTS? Turn their back on this azzclown? He's already turned his back on the university with all his tradition wrecking stunts and comments on how great of a coach he is. They need to punt his butt as far away from NU as possible.
Callacant has coached this team to the worst stretch of football in almost 50 years. He owns the two worst losses in Cornhusker history. He cost Nebraska a bowl game and winning record his first year by ramming a system down the throats of players who weren't brought in for that system. His defenses have sucked all four years, the offense collapses against decent teams and it goes into hiding against good teams. He's winless, WINLESS, when trailing at halftime, 0-18. Hasn't beaten a top 20 team in his 4 years. There are so many more unphathomable records I could list but it disgusts me to think about them.
He's a gutless, arogant, self rightious, egotisticle glory hound that after the best performance they have had all year with a backup QB, all he can talk about is how Ganz is a product of the system. That the coaches made his what he is, not even giving due credit to the kids. It's the system not the players. Please,,,,,,,,,,,what an absolute tool!
Recruits will come just because it's Nebraska. They won't do any worse with someone else than what Callacant has accomplished.

TripleOption67, Recruits will not come to play for "Nebraska" because its "Nebraska", unless they are already "Nebraska" residents ask Solich or even Osborne. Call me crazy, but I have a Facebook account and I ask recruits sometimes who opp'd not to attend UNL what led them to their decision and most of them say "Its in the middle of nowhere". Take a look at next years recruits and see where the best player are from. Coach Callahan is right about Ganz being a product of the system. He has been watching it from the sidelines and runnings the 2nd team offense for the last 3 years. As far as defense goes I don't believe anywhere on Coach Callahan's resume does it say "Defensive Specialist". The defense doesn't suck. Must I remind you our Black Shirt Defense 1 years ago lead the nation in sacks by a landslide? I strongly believe we just lost a lot on defense thats all and its showing. Teams have ups and downs believe it or not. Just last year after we won the north people were saying "Nebraska is Back", now the whole world is counting us out because of a bad season. Give coach Callahan a chance. He came to a team built around a running game and turned them into a throwing team in one season. Wheres the love?
