Nevada co-captains hold press conference to plead for fans to show up
It's a pretty sad state of affairs for Nevada football followers. KESQ-TV in Reno is reporting that the team's co-captains have begun pleading with fans to show up for this weekend's home game against Hawaii.
Earlier this week, we showed that Nevada most definitely fit into the "have nots" with regards to schools that have lackluster attendance, with UNR averaging 47.8 capacity full for their home games so far this season.
The Wolfpack team leaders firmly believe that they remain in the hunt for the WAC title this season, and are looking for that extra boost.
(Starting lineman Adam) Kiefer, defensive back Kevin Stanley and linebacker Roosevelt Cooks agreed to U-N-R athletic officials' request to appear at a news conference Wednesday to give their take on the attendance woes. The shrinking crowds have the potential to affect the school's standing in the N-C-Double-A's Division I over the next few years.
Stanley says they players thought it was an issue that needs to be addressed. However, he says they are aware the team needs to give fans a reason to show up by winning more games.
Through four home games this year, attendance is averaging 15-thousand-200 per game at Mackay Stadium, which seats 31-thousand-900.

We have the same situation here at Nicholls State. We are in first place in one of the toughest I-AA conferences, the Southland. Despite narrowly losing to a Big 10 school earlier this year, NSU had a half-empty stadium crowd watch the Colonels beat then-#5 Texas State. In particular, the student attendance, which should be the school's bedrock constituency, is pathetic.
I honestly do not know the answer on how to turn this around. I applaud the co-captains at UN-R for their efforts to try to get crowds out to their games. I hope that their on-field successes will garner them the attendance that the Wolfpack richly deserve.
